Mrs. Katan brushed an imaginary strand of hair out of her face and rubbed her forehead with frustration. "You work with horses, so... Tell me what I should do. I don't know what to do if there's nothing wrong with her and no one can ride her." It didn't help that she knew little about training horses. She wasn't about to give up on the animal, though, not after spending as much as she had on her.

"I think you should just ride her an' just let her know you respect her. She's a fancy lady an' she knows it," Rory chuckled, moving his head a bit as the horse playfully nosed at him. "It ain't tha' she donnae want t' be ridden, just tha' she donnae think you all respect her." He gently pushed the horse's nose away and she lipped at his hand, looking for treats again.

Respect her? But... she was a horse. Mrs. Katan didn't even respect other humans, let alone a horse. But just because she couldn't did mean her trainers couldn't. Looking expectantly at the boys behind her, she shook her head and gestured toward Snowflake. "You heard him, now get to work..." The group mumbled to themselves, all looking a bit unsure. Finally, one stepped forward. "How do you show respect to a horse?" he asked Rory, rubbing his hands together nervously.

"You're a stable hand. I shouldnae hae t' tell you how t' do tha'," Rory said, giving the man a look. "You got expensive horses, you should know how t' respect them."

The stable hand shrugged, again a bit insulted. "Expensive or not, it's still just a horse." He clearly wasn't a horse lover, only doing his job for the sake of having an income. Mrs. Katan eyed him, not exactly liking the fact that he was somewhat insulting her very expensive horse, but knew that she would have said the same thing. Still, she prized Snowflake over the stable hand and all the trainers, feeling she deserved more respect than they did.

Rory frowned and looked at Mrs. Katan. "Fire him."

Startled, Mrs. Katan blinked at Rory before cocking a smile and almost laughing at it, only because... well, this really didn't seem like Rory. While she liked the attitude when it wasn't directed at her, she would wait to fire anyone just yet. "Who here thinks they'll be able to show Snowflake here some respect? Hm?" All the hands shot up, if only to keep themselves from potentially being fired, though all had quite unsure faces. "Good. Now get to work." Rory had come in handy twice today. Not only had he shown her why Snowflake was uncooperative, but he'd also scared her workers into doing their job. As the group headed for the horse, Mrs. Katan stopped the stable hand. "Except for you." "You're not seriously going to--?!" "I am." And with that, the young man stormed off toward the house. Still one problem, though. Now she needed a new stable hand.

Rory just watched passively, stroking the horse's neck. When the stable hands came over, he let them take the horse, climbing over the fence to stand with Mrs. Katan. "You hae a lot of beautiful horses. What d'you do wi' them all?"

Mrs. Katan watched the stable hands work with the horse as she spoke to Rory, only occasionally actually giving him her full attention. "I show them. Breed some of them. If I happen to find another Lipizzaner, that's what I plan to do with Snowflake... You're right, yes, they are beautiful animals, when properly bred and cared for." She admittedly didn't much care for the more common breeds, and wasn't about to say a poorly groomed horse was beautiful, but she was quite fond of her horses.

Rory rested his forearms on the fence, watching the hands with Snowflake. "You should see th' horses w' hae around Farstep. They ain't all pretty like yours, but they're good horses. Outsiders seem t' really like our Vanners. Dunno why, though."

Mrs. Katan's eyes fell onto Rory, her mouth falling slightly agape and her eyes narrowing as she looked over the boy. "Vanners? Gypsy Vanners?" Well, it certainly was fitting that they'd have them at a carnival. "Those are rather prized by 'outsiders', you know. They can cost quite a bit." Not like her Lipizzaner over there, but still worth a good amount of money. It was a shame to hear they went relatively ungroomed, though, being the valued breed they were.

"Yeah, I know their worth," Rory answered, colorless eyes still on the horse. "It's a good portion o' th' income fae Farstep. First time Lee e'er came out t' th' stables there, I had t' break one in fae some rich outsider. Took her fae a ride a few times on me own Vanner tha' me da gae me." He moved his head just enough to look at her while still keeping his focus mostly on the horse. "An' I know what you're thinkin', but w' take good care o' our animals there. W're not a dirty an' unkempt people. W' may be poor, but w're clean."

"Of course. I was thinking no such thing," she lied coolly, her eyes back on Snowflake. "What breed did you plan to get Lee? Or were you lying when you offered her a horse?" She cocked her eyebrow, but continued to watch the stable hands.

"Figured I'd get her a Vanner like I got. Thoroughbred's a bit tall fae her an' they can be spirited. You seen Fao's when he come t' get her, I'm guessin', so you know tha' cannae be a good one fae her, and there's just no way she'll be able to manage gettin' on a Shire," Rory said, shrugging. "There's a horse tha' Kettle's brother sired tha's pretty good an' looks kinda close t' him, e'en th' blue eyes. I think Lee would prolly like her. Da ain't promised her t' anyone yet. He knows I've had me eye on her. Thought about breedin' her an' Kettle, but I think she'll also make a fair gift t' Lee." He moved so he was finally looking at the woman full on. "I take it you wanna get one o' th' Vanners fae your stable, eh?"

She was pleased to hear her daughter would be getting one of the nicer breeds, a small, cool smile on her lips as Rory spoke. Her eyes fell over to the boy as he faced her, and she folded her arms, cocking her head. "I don't suppose you could help me with that, could you?" A new addition would be nice, but she wouldn't ask for Rory's assistance directly if she could help it.
