I was in a church once that celebrated Halloween, but they only allowed biblical costumes. I was the Genie in "I Dream of Jeannie" and my mother told me to tell everyone I was Delilah. Haha, I wonder how many people saw through that. It wasn't a big church though, one floor, 40-60 people at most.

"Still being in high school" is no excuse for laziness. I'm still in high school, and when I run into a word and I don't know what it means, I check with my good pal Merriam Webster.

The Celts believed the souls of the dead roamed the streets and villages at night. Since not all spirits were thought to be friendly, gifts and treats were left out to pacify the evil and ensure next years crops would be plentiful. This custom evolved into trick-or-treating. End of story. >_<

Why?

I find it to be a great holiday to let out some steam. I run around scaring friends, knowing that they'll do the same to me. I'm a little old for trick-or-treating, so we just have our fun in harmless pranks. Someone throws a party, and we all end up making our own costumes.

you didn't tell of the start of costumes, and hw they had origins in dressing up in disguise as monsters to scare away the boogyman! surprised nor of THOSE traditions roots in ritual mask-wearing for purposes of taking on a persona, which was an act of symbolic invocation!

It seemingly was imported to be obnoxious despite their being no reason for any such sanctioning.

I'm just glad we haven't decided that Mardi Gras is a good idea.

I love Halloween. Partially I just love the time of year and the excuse to put on a costume. In the early evening, I dress up and hand out candy to all comers. When the kiddies go to bed, I join my pagan friends for a samhain celebration to mark the changing of the season and honor the dead.

Don't need a definition it's pretty much in the first three letters, *hint hint.*

But yes, could you elaborate as to the reason why?

I'm rather irked by the excuse of costumes for poorly designed outfits in either to show more than just a little skin (skimpy outfits can be acceptable when they're are reasons beyond wanting to get laid/attention) or out of laziness, like the children parading around in their own street clothes saying for halloween they're 'gangster.'

It is essentially this sort of nonsense that I abhor. I simply do not care for vulgarity.

In my country (Poland hello moto) Halloween is seen as a funtime for kids. Some teenagers too.
But they have to remember not to drink too much during the party, as next day is the day of hard work. Go to the cementary, tend and clean the greaves, first of all: find them, and survive in the darn extremely cold weather and raining... (it's always raining on 1st November, always). But when evening comes and you look at that ocean of lights it's one of the most beautiful things you ever see in a lifetime! Besides I live in Stettin, we have the biggest cementary in Europe mrgreen (I think, I'm not quite sure if the one in Paris is bigger)

Sounds amazing. We need to adopt that last part of the tradition or something like it.

More or less...

Origins of Halloween (info dump for anyone who might be interested)

Personally for Halloween, we take the kids trick or treating and that is about it. I tend to celebrate Samhain on the actual cross-quarter day (which this year is Nov 7th), so it keeps it a bit separate for me.
