The basketball boys had all stopped now to watch, because it was better than TV. Franz threw the last hula hoop, and everyone stared as Simon slightly desperately reached out with his leg -- and there it went, looped around his ankle, rotated in merry circles as he kept his hips, arms, and one ankle moving in different orbits to each other.
"I don't even know how the ******** this works and I'm looking at it," said one of the onlookers.
Franz was chanting something very softly under his breath. It took Simon a little while to work out that he was actually singing the "Jurassic Park" theme, in tones of hushed revelatory awe. He watched the hula hoops move with every sign of bursting paternal pride, hands clasped together in front of him.
"Ferris," he said, "where have you been all my life?"

The awe, the surprise, and the Franz-provided theatrics were all, in complete honesty, very well placed given the spectacle they had been inspired by. What was going on was defying expectation, breaking the very rules that governed the intricate workings of reality. It wouldn't be a stretch at all to say that the basketball players and the cheerleading captain had just borne witness to the birth of a paradigm shift.
Simon Ferris, notorious klutz and nervous wreck, was actually good at something.
"Uh... I dunno," the boy nervously answered, still swaying and spinning the entire school's supply of hula hoops.
A silent moment passed. Then, an apologetic look alighting his green eyes, he asked a little more nervously, "C-can I stop?"
