The village had no warning that their men were no longer able to protect them. The sun had just touched the horizon and its flaming light set aglow four powerful kalonas standing at the edge of camp.

Darkest snorts as she stands boldly looking at the two-legger village. Their smell disgusted and irritated her. The sun set her coat ablaze, turning it into black fire. Behind her she can feel the presence of the others, eager to begin but waiting for her command. A stillness settles over the village just before an old grannie spots them and sets up a cry.

Deceitful tosses her head back and shrieks as she rears up getting her front hooves several feet off the ground. "Its time for you to die two-leggers!"

Quiet exhales sharply and bobs her head. Her gold eyes stare into the ones of those who came to look at them.

Frozen lashes her tail and paws a hoof at the ground. She wanted to tear into them as she had the warriors. Why is Darkest holding us back?

Darkest lifts her head, "Tonight we give no quarter! When we leave no trace of them shall remain!" She begins to move forward with the other three following her. They roll into the village like of wave of living death.

The next morning there is not a single trace that anything alive had once lived in that clearing. It had been stripped completely bare. Only several red splotches on the ground told of something not right.

Deceitful stretched and even her wounds did not seem to hurt as much as before. She exhales in a snort and her breath billows visible in front of her. The forest too had sensed a changed and reacted to it. Everything seemed bright and clear and free.

Movement by the green mare caused the blue one to open her eyes and blink a couple of times to clear the sleep away. "Its not like you to wake up first Deceit. Something not to your liking?" Frozen gives a full body shake that sends her mane flying.

"Hardly sister. In fact quite the opposite. Everything is to my liking this morning.

Darkest's black form moves up beside them, "That is because this is how it should be. The land is ours to rule and control." She watches the other two nod respectfully to her and flicks her tail to acknowledge it.

"Does this mean no more patrols and scouting missions?" The red mare tilts her head to look at them as her ear wiggles forward and back.

Darkest chuckles, "Oh, we will not have as many Quiet." Life seemed to be going well for them. The territory was theirs and theirs alone. All the two-leggers in the area had been wiped out.

On the horizon, unbeknown known to them, danger looms ever closer.

Sunlight glints off a red coat standing at the edge of the cliff. Quiet stares off into the far distance over the forest. The wind plays along her leathery wings, teasing her to come join it for a far away flight.

"Thinking of leaving us as well?" A green lip curls up in a mocking snarl. "Not a week had passed before Darkest deserted us and your still up here waiting for her to come back? How long has it been now since she left? Three weeks? A month?

"Only two weeks Deceitful. She'll be back."

"Oh yeah, she's doing a perfect job leading us from wherever bloody she is!" Deceitful hisses through her teeth and lashes her tail.

"I must agree with Deceit, Quiet. Why would Darkest leave us after such a victory like that?" The blue mare stands there watching Quiet's back.

Quiet's flanks heaves before she turns to look at the other two. "Honestly I don't know."

"Then Why are we waiting here?!"

She chuckles looking down at the ground, "Would you believe me if I said I didn't know the answer to that either?

Frozen and Deceitful roll their eyes, clearly not believing.

She was a lot alike her mother. Deftly controlling the others to keep the herd together. In all actuality she didn't care if they stayed or left. They were better off together because they were all alike. Normal kalona sometimes didn't take well to mutants. While strong singly as a group they were a force to be respected.

Quiet looks down observing the landscape below her. It felt good to be in the sky with the wind blowing over her outstretched wings. Directly below was the thickest part of the forest. Some place not agreeable to landing wings. Behind her, she knew, was the herd's main land. The heart of their territory and fiercely protected. Ahead of her in the distance she could barely make out the now overgrown clearing that had belonged to the two-leggers. To the right was the large meadow and small lake; to the left the sun glinted off the water of a stream that fed to the lake.

A black head lifts and looks through the tree branches to see the red mare flying over head. Darkest smiles, her daughter was much like herself in her love for being in flight. Quickly she canters to a big enough clearing to take off. Her leathery wings beat the wind as she closes with Quiet. Darkest whinnies a greeting to let the red mare know she's there.

A whinny behind her makes Quiet crane her neck around to look over her wing. She answers back and circles around 'til she's flying at the black mare's flank. "Your back! Your back! Everyone is wondering where you went." She kicks her feet out in excitement with each wing beat.

Upon distance shores......

Many, many, many canoes grind to a halt on a gravely beach. The canoes are pulled from the water to make room for more. It seems the herd had missed one. Left before the raid to bring back help for the tribe. Now he had returned with all the tribes massed together. They were going to rid the land of the evil beasts.

In a glade clearing.....

Three mares gather round a forth. They listen as she spins a tale of where she's been and all the wonders she's seen. Politely the black mare drops in that she's pregnant and that was the whole reason she left.

"WHAT?!?!" The single word sends birds fluttering from trees. Deceitful sputters incoherently for several minutes.

"I believe what she's trying to convey is more, why did you choose now Darkest?" Frozen tilts her head to consider her babbling sister. "And why didn't you tell us before you left?"

Quiet was having a hard time taking it all in. I'm going to have siblings? How many? Males or Females? Will Darkest still have time for me? Will they play with me? Will they even like me? She starts to worry and twitch her skin.

Darkest watches them as they all react in their own ways. Deceitful over-reacting, Frozen calmly and translating, and Quiet worrying. A wink at the red mare eases the twitchy-ness. She exhales softly, "I couldn't tell you because I didn't have time to. I had to leave right away to find him. Otherwise you know I would have. And you all were alright.

Deceitful stops sputtering. She knew what Darkest said was true. They had been safe.
