"It's fairly easy," said L'ior with a chuckle, offering the girl a wide, paddle-shaped brush with sturdy bristles as he dipped his own in the soapsand again. "You'll want to scrub, but not to sand off his hide... like this?" He bent his back to scrubbing for a moment, finding a dirty spot. Obligingly, the contented dragon shifted, offering the others his side. "You really cannot hurt him with the brush unless you are really trying quite hard."

Quite pleased with himself, Dioth settled down to enjoy being scrubbed, with a contented rumble. He'd found someone he quite favored!

Allia took the offered brush, running her hand over the bristles to see for herself what they felt like. She watched what L'ior did quite carefully before following suit, dipping her brush in the soapsand and seeking out a dirty spot to scrub. She started out light, then increased the pressure gently, until it was enough to remove the dirt.

Ha! She was washing a dragon! She looked hopefully to L'ior. "Like this?"

Pausing to watch the candidate scrub his lifemate's dusty blue hide, L'ior grinned, pleased. "Indeed, like that," said L'ior, smiling. "A bit harder than you'd wash your own back... of course, a hatchling's a little bit more tender-skinned, but Dioth's older, so his hide's a fair bit tougher. They do get more sturdy as they grow... you've got a light touch, so I wouldn't worry about you hurting yours when the time comes." That unfailing optimism, as usual, made him choose the encouraging path -- though L'ior could not say whether Allia would or would not Impress.

Idly, Dioth craned his long neck over to look at the two of them, watching with a benevolent, approving gaze and giving a pleased little rumble.

Allia beamed happily, pleased to hear that she was doing it right, and absolutely thrilled by L'ior's optimism. If a dragonrider thought she would Impress - and a dragon liked her! - then surely her chances were good? It reassured her, at the very least, to be encouraged so.

As she continued to scrub, she used the opportunity to admire Dioth's beautiful blue hide up-close. Curious as to how long the pair had been together, she asked, "How old is Dioth?"

"Hm," L'ior said, pondering it and biting at his lower lip as he thought about it. "Well... I Impressed when I was sixteen turns old," he said, "and I've thirty-four now. So I suppose that makes Dioth eighteen turns, then?" His nose wrinkled a bit, and he laughs. "I suppose that sounds old to you, doesn't it?"

L'ior was in his thirties? Really? Allia looked at him, trying to determine if he looked thirty-four, but couldn't decide. She'd never been very good at figuring people's ages beyond general things like 'middle-aged.' "A little," she admitted. It did make the bluerider more than twice her age, but rather than put it that way, she compared herself to Dioth instead. "He's older than I am!"

"Indeed, I suppose I am approaching being 'old', but I don't feel it," replied L'ior with a snort, and a broad smile. "I don't think so anyway. And indeed -- wait. How old are you, then, if you don't mind my asking?" One hand raked back through his hair, spreading more soapsand where it'd no business being.

"Not old old," Allia assured him, chuckling. Not really old, but very definitely a...mature adult. Or something like that. Still, it wasn't like he was going gray or anything. That was when 'old' started to apply. "Fifteen turns," she answered proudly.

Sputtering a bit, L'ior shook his head and laughed. "Well, and you've plenty of time, haven't you?" A grin curved his lips. "Dioth is indeed older than you, by... three turns, then... He could very well be your elder brother, you know." The grin modulated, gently teasing.

Despite himself, L'ior tended to gather adopted siblings like they were going out of fashion.

She supposed she did have plenty of time - several turns, in fact - but there were some cases where sooner was better! But later was better than not at all, of course...still, five or six turns seemed like an awfully long time. "I've never had an older brother," she said, clearly tickled by the suggestion that Dioth could be hers, "Just sisters."

"I was raised in the crèche," said L'ior with a chuckle, "right here in the Weyr. So it was a bit like I'd several big brothers to torment me. Everyone should have brothers, I think, whether dragon or not."

Craning his neck around to nose at the little candidate, Dioth drew a breath, and let it out in a gentle snuffle, to ruffle the girl's hair. Is a sister like a clutchmate, L'iormine?

Yes, mine, chortled L'ior internally.

Ah. Dioth pondered this a moment. That would be nice, then, I think.

"I have a brother," she clarified, "But he's younger." The Candidate did miss her family, especially in a place as foreign to her as the Weyr.

Allia laughed, her dutiful scrubbing interrupted by Dioth's nosing and snuffling. It was like a dragon noogie! Certainly sibling-like, and affectionate enough to seem like approval. She reached up to rub his nose, grinning. "What do you think, Dioth? Would you like to be my big brother?"

"Ah, a younger brother -- it is certainly not the same thing," said L'ior with a grin, as he watched the affectionate blue making a nuisance of himself with pleasure in his warm blue gaze.

The lazy blue, pleased with the nose-rubbings, let out a rather deep breath on what seemed a bit like a draconic sigh. If he'd had the ability, he would have smiled. You can tell her that I would indeed like to be her... brother, L'iormine. Though it is silly to imagine her hatching.

A burst of amused chuckles escaped L'ior, and he grinned. "Dioth says he would like to be your brother, but he cannot imagine you breaking shell."

Not without help, amended the blue.

Allia smiled with delight, resting her cheek lightly against the blue dragon for a moment. It was a bit of a silly notion, really, but that didn't dampen the appeal of having a dragon-brother for the young Candidate.

"Not with stubby little fingers like these," she agreed, giggling, "And no snout worth speaking of." She tapped Dioth's lightly. Humans were definitely not made to hatch!

I would have helped her hatch, interjected Dioth, in a pleasant humor, nuzzling a bit.

"He says he would have helped you hatch. Hah, I imagine you a dainty little green if you were indeed a dragon," L'ior said with a pleased smile as he began to rinse away some soapsand from the clean blue hide. "With great big bright eyes. And perhaps spots."
