According to my mother, I am still a Catholic because I was baptized against my baby will. I said I was Atheist because I lack a belief in a diety. She responded with "So you think you're a monkey!?" My mom does not believe in evolution. My sister voted for McCain simply because Palin opposes abortion. I am an Atheist in an all Catholic family. gonk

What are you thoughts on families that share different beliefs? Do you have any experience with this sort of thing?

wow. I was brought up Muslim, but my parents now no longer follow any fixed religion but are very Spiritual nevertheless and totally accept my choices. I am still Muslim but am very open minded which causes concern for me as my husband may not accept some of the views I'm learning about and exploring. Its all tolerance. I think If you truly follow your religion, you will be tolerant of all people, as tolerance Is a major part of most Religions.

my mom was a baptist growing up, and my dad was a mormon, and they both seemed to denounce religion for a party lifestyle when they got together. i was sort of raised mormon (and still believe i suppose. i married one, although we both don't practice actively, and probably any children we ever have will be raised mormon, despite we sometimes go to a baptist church that doesn't have anti mormon literature all over the place because i (and he) still get defensive when people insult the mother faith), but had to negotiate my religion with my family's prefered lifestyle, which was tricky because they are so contradictive to each other. then my dad is inactive (from time to time), and a general spiritualist and my mom became wicca, so i learned about it and respect it (it's gotten me in trouble with some people because they see it as devil worship, but they're just ignorant. i am not active in wicca, but i have respected nature more and the elements because of it). and i walk in a religion minefield. it's kind of frustrating.

My mom's a Christian, my sister's agnostic, and I'm Pagan. At first, I suppose it was sort of an issue, because my mom was worried that my sis and I had lost our faith just kind of to spite the Christians we'd known growing up. It's much easier now though; even though we're both under 18 still, my mom respects our decisions and lets us practice basically any religion we want. So, I think it really just depends on what sort of family you have. If your parents are relaxed like my mom, it's not a big problem, but I know a lot of families where the kids are scared to death about telling their parents they don't believe any more because they'll probably be disowned.

My dad's agnostic, though he doesn't want to admit it to himself. He doesn't live with us anymore.
My mom has been exploring different Eastern religions. Last I heard it was Buddhism, but I'm pretty sure she's looking into Hinduism now.
And my brother, I don't think he thinks about it too much.
So it's clearly not a big issue in my immediate family.

But my dad's side of the family is very, very Christian.
They don't know that I'm an atheist, and I don't plan to tell them anytime soon.
I'm very proud of who I am, but I think they would be, what's the right word, hurt? :l

Ideally, I think people should respect their loved ones' religious choices. I do.
But I can see how that could get difficult if, say, you believe that your loved one is going to Hell for those choices.

Catholics are Christian. Atheism is not a religion, since there are atheistic religions. It is a belief stance on the non-existence of deities. If they are not practicing any religion then they are referred to as irreligious.

Relax. Catholics and Christians do have their differences. And when religion is mentioned, Atheism can be brought into the conversation despite it not being one.

Catholics and protestants have their differences ninja

*nods* to the second statement though.

I'm one of two atheists in a family of, Muslims, Jehovah Witnesses and Pentacoastals. It's pretty diverse.

I understand that that can be frustrating when a fmaily disagrees, I just tend to stay out of those conversations and usually am unhappily pulled in.

I'm sorry if I seemed aggressive. There is a erroneous stereotype among protestants that Catholics are not Christian hence the comment "Catholic and Christian".

Back on topic, I'm a heretical Christian and my fiancee is an eclectic neo-pagan. It can be difficult because we have different celebrations but eh, I'm sure we'll find a happy medium soon.

It's good, then I didn't have to be the one who seemed all aggressive.

@Shiori, you still phrased it as Catholics and Christians as if the two were different things. Do you not think Catholics are Christian?

I know the feeling...well kinda. I am a buhddist person in an all-mormon family. My mom feels the incredible necessity to go to church and makes me go along with her. I go because I believe its good to support her and the famliy in whatever they believe. We have all come to an understanding though where I am concernd by them just leaving me to do my thing as long as I still honor their wishes. It all works out. I think that your family will just end up working out a kind of deal so nobody gets their toes stepped on.

I realize that Catholics are Christians, but they've kinda progressed into their own thing I guess you could say.
