Ellandra smiled softly. "Have you ever thought, Rory, that your heart is worth more than any of the things her parents could give her?" Pausing, she tilted her head and thought for a long moment. "The thing most important to know about Lee has nothing to do with her being an outsider like me, but rather the fact that she's grown up missing out on nearly all affection and caring, and far too few compliments. Rather than trying to buy her too much - as that's just what her parents did, after all - I would just try to show her how much you care, in lots of different ways. I know it thrilled me every time Faolan mentioned how much more he thought of me than I thought of myself." She wasn't sure her opinion would be of much help to Rory, but she hoped it would be.

"I do nice things fae her a lot. I cannae really afford presents all th' time, other than th' ones I carve meself. I like makin' dinner fae her," the boy said, then blushed. "An' kissin's always nice."

Ellandra broke into a full-fledged smile at that. "cooking for her's one of the best things you can do to make her happy; you're already doing a wonderful job, I'm sure." She paused for a moment and tilted her head. "Something that would truly, deeply help her feel better about herself and make her happy might be to figure out a way to help her really learn to paint. . . I'm afraid I don't know a way to help you with that, though."

"I ain't much o' a painter, but I ask fae her t' paint me some pictures all th' time," Rory said, pulling a knee up and wrapping his arms around it, resting his chin on it. "You an' Fao, are you worried tha' me an' Lee are goin' too fast?"

"That's very kind of you, Rory," Ellandra said, rocking Bel slowly. The baby's eyes drifted closed as she started to fall asleep in her mother's arms. "I don't think Faolan nor I can really be the judge of moving too fast. . . but what do you think? Do you think you are? Does she think so? A lot of that is up to you both to decide. . . but I wouldn't jump in to a marriage or anything just yet, if that's what you're asking."

Rory looked down, picking at some loose threads on the bottom of his jeans. "W' made love already. Donnae worry, though. W're bein' careful. Donnae do a thin' wi'out protection. I ain't ready t' be a da just yet." He looked up at her. "I think on it an' it seems quick tha' w' arrived t' this point so soon, but at th' same time, it feels so right t' be wi' her like tha'. I know I love her an' one day I'm gonna marry her. Pretty sure when tha' day happens, her mother will kill me, but it'll still be th' best day o' me life."

Ellandra tilted her head and bit her lip. "Already? Well . . . I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, considering how much both of you care for one another." Then a small smile quirked her lips. "When you marry her someday, Faolan and I will keep her mother from killing you - I think we'd both like to put that horrid woman in her place. She paused for a long moment, closing her eyes thoughtfully, then added, "But I have to say I pity your being stuck with her as a mother-in-law."

"Well, she's just doin' what she thinks is best, I suppose," Rory answered, shrugging. "Her da seems really nice, though." He looked up at Ellandra and grinned. "Besides, talk what you want about Lee's mother, you still got Keagan as your in-law."

Ellandra laughed out loud. "Actually, I think it's Faolan who suffers from that more than I do - all that Keagan's ever done to me is tell me humiliating stories about Faolan as a child." She smiled at Rory and tilted her head, then looked down to her baby. "Hmm. . . would you like to hold Bel, Rory? Little Bel, would you like to meet Rory?" The baby gurgled, and her mother turned back to Rory, inquisitively."I think she wants to meet you," she said.

Ellandra smiled gently and handed over the baby, introducing the two as she did so. "Rory, this is little Beltaine; Bel, this is Rory." The baby blinked up at the teenage boy as she was handed to him, her yuong mind trying to process where Mama was now and who this person-who-wasn't-Daddy was.

"Ah, howway tha', little lass. Welcome t' th' world," Rory said quietly, smiling at the baby. He shifted a bit so he could support the infant with one arm, his other hand stroking lightly at the dusting of hair, completely awed by the tiny, perfect being. Forgetting about Ellandra being there, his focus totally on Bel, he began singing a soft lullaby, the same tune the music box played. True the boy was young and admitted to not being ready for children of his own, but it was clear that when he was ready, he'd be a good father.

Ellandra only too gladly let Rory forget abut her presence, since it made him relax and feel better. Besides, even from this distance she could tell that Bel was happy and safe with this boy, and she wouldn't break up this little moment of sweetness for the world. For her part, Bel's eyes started to close at the sound of the soft lullaby. True, it wasn't Mama or Daddy holding her and making that sound, but it was soothing all the same, and she felt safe and happy - more than enough to make an infant fall asleep.

Rory smiled as the infant drifted off, speaking softly to her in the language of the didikai and ghosting his hand over her fuzzy hair. After a moment, he looked up at Ellandra, blushing a little.
"Sorry," he told her quietly. He hadn't meant to forget about the woman or take over the parenting. The infant in his arms had simply reminded him of when Kendra had been little.
