Nyota's ears focused on her company, instead of things that weren't behind her. She spoke softly, very embarassed indeed.
"N-no, it's not you....just thinking about...well, the past, as any one would do when left on their own. Just meeting you has made me think...more...about that past."
She shuffled her forefeet on the ground, stirring up a bit of the dust. She smiled softly as she watches her paws.
"Probably not wise, but...it doesn't hurt as much as it did."

Sharifu'bedui's black ears tilted forward to better focus on Nyota'ausi's soft voice, and he schooled his expression carefully to be gentle, so that she did not take some turn of his lip or flick of his ear wrong and add to her apparent embarassment.
"Then forgive me for being the cause which stirs up painful memories." Though he seemed to be very free with apologies, this was as sincere as the ones that preceded it. Gentle as he was, the lion from the mountains was unfailingly conscious of his manners, and he was acutely concerned that he might somehow offend this skittish lioness.
"I think...perhaps I will leave you to yourself," he said after a moment of silence. "I fear I am poorest company for a lady." Clearly his presence was difficult for her, and so he removed the difficulty by removing himself.
