"O' course you're part o' th' family. Why wouldnae w' like you, darlin'? You're as much in th' family as Zia an' th' twins. You're one o' our kids, Rhian," Faolan told her giving her an almost incredulous look that she'd ever think otherwise.

"But. . . Rhian paused a moment. "Then why are you trying to get rid of me as much as you can. . .?"

Rhian frowned as well, unknowingly mirroring Faolan's expression. "Isn't that why you're making me go to school? To het me out of your way?"

Rhian looked down. "I'm not very good at my purpose, and I'm in the way all the time, and I couldn't help Ellandra r you feel better or works things out beore we left, and I mess up nearly everything. . . .. . the only thing I can do if make this," she said, drawing up some cotton candy and staring at it for a long moment before biting it. "Everybody else has something useful, or are smart, and I just make treats." She raised a blue-eyed gaze to Faolan at long last. "I hope I'm not defective. . ."

"You're not defective. You're still learning. Even Zia wasn't good at its purpose. Sometimes it still isn't, but it learns from its mistakes. You couldnae helped me an' your mama, darlin'. W' were th' only ones tha' coulda fixed what we'd broken, okay?" He stroked her hair gently.

"But I'm supposed to help and guide. . . . and all I seem to do is be the one needing help," Rhian said, looking down again as she contemplating reality and the sweet in her hand at the same time. "And . . . it still doesn't change that I'm only good for making this," she added, making more cotton candy and eating on that, too.

"Now, love, you're plenty good at other things. You helped Elle when she was at the Gardens, right?" Faolan pointed out, still stroking the Essentic's hair. "We all need help sometimes. Even Zia. When it was little, it needed help all the time. Now that its older, it still needs it."

Rhian shook her head, still looking downcast as she munched ever more cotton candy. "I don't think I helped that much - just kept her from breaking into pieces." She could have done more, probably, if she wasn't the silly little flutterby she was. Mama deserved an Essentic who actually could help her and everyone else.

"Sometimes that's just enough," Faolan said, shrugging. "You probably donnae know this, wean, but some years back, I was supposed t' be a father. Things happen an' th' babies never got born. I would've given anything then t' hae you or Zia there t' keep me from breakin'." He looked down at her. "I got you now, though. Elle an' me got both o' you t' keep an eye on us. Sometimes, you're gonna fail an' tha' ain't 'cause you weren't good enough, it's 'cause sometimes a person just needs t' break so they can mend an' be stronger."

"No, I didn't know. . . exactly," Rhian said quietly, thoughtfully. "But I felt sadness about the babies sometimes, from you and Mama both, that wasn't tied to Sam's eyes or anything, so that makes sense. . ." She paused for a long moment. "It's more distant for Mama, through you to the same source. . . those babies weren't Mama's, right?" she asked, finally starting to accept his embrace a little more and looking up at him with wide, empathetic blue eyes.

Faolan shook his head. "Nae, they werenae hers. Just a couple o' girls I used t' know as a lad. I was too young then t' really be a father, maybe. There were other things about it all, too, but it's all in th' past now an' nae sense bringin' it up with th' twins here. Elle knows th' story an' she's more or less okay wi' it." He looked down at Rhian, giving a little smile. "You know Elle wasnae me first love, but she's my true love. Th' others, I guess I was tryin' t' fill an Elle-shaped hole I didnae know I had till I met her." He patted the Essentic's shoulder affectionately. "Guess you do help after all, wean. I feel a lot better. How about passin' me some o' tha' cotton candy, yeah?"

Rhian nodded seriously. "If it's like Mama, you were. When we left, there was a big hole in her that I was kind of . . . .. taping together, I guess. . . You and Mama have a big knot tying you up at that spot," the flutterby said, before taking another bite of cotton candy and spinning up some more for Faolan as she ate. "And I don't really think I've helped that much, but if you feel a little better, then that's good enough for me." She wasn't entirely sure of what she was saying, but it sounded right, and even if Faolan understood no more than her, well. . . it was something to talk about!

"We didikai believe tha' soulmates are connected by a silver thread," Faolan chuckled, nibbling at the cotton candy. "Mostly, though, it feels like I ain't whole unless Elle's around. Feel even more complete wi' th' bairns." He smiled at her. "An' how d'you like bein' a big sister?"
