Spectrum felt his own nerves grate slightly at the short answers. Just because he never showed it, didn't mean he didn't have a temper or annoyances. “Of course I don't know them, you never talk about them,” he replied, trying to infuse his usual up-beat attitude but failing to quite get there. He doubted Aliana would notice, she rarely did. “You know, you can actually talk to me, Ali,” Spectrum said, nuzzling her side affectionately. “I like hearing you speak about your family and your life. Much more interesting then mine!” he joked poorly.

Snorting softly, in a most undignified manner, Aliana rolled her eyes. “I can't talk to you, Spectrum. You only want to talk about silly stuff. The things I want to discuss are important, serious things. You wouldn't understand, would you? You hate that kind of thing.” She twisted around, dislodging his head from it's position on her side before lifting herself up onto her feet. “Anyway, I don't have anything to talk about with my family. Can't we just drop it now?”

Spectrum stared up at the sky, the sunny sky becoming slightly cloudy. It would probably rain later, he knew from experience, even though it was still warm. Hot rains were the worst, humid and sticky, they weren't pleasant, yet still Spectrum stayed in the territory, because the views, well they took his breathe away most days. Climbing to his feet, he walked to where Aliana had moved to and nudged her side softly. He wanted to point out that they had barely spoken of her family before she'd balked and tried to avoid it, so there was nothing to 'drop' anyway. Still, he held it back and said instead, “Stop being such a sour-puss, it's such a good day, lets enjoy it before the rain starts okay? No more talking of families or anything, lets' just have fun?” It was the attitude Aliana had come to expect and what she had come to rely on, so he would give her what she wanted. A playful fool to relax with, nothing more, nothing less.

Aliana took in a deep breathe, relaxing slowly as Spectrum nudged her side affectionately, glancing down at her friend, yes he was a friend though she'd never tell him that, he'd never shut up about it if he knew. She rested her head on top of his, using her slightly larger size to her advantage over him. “I'm not a sour-puss, you're just too sweet,” she retorted. “Everyone is sour compared to you,” she sniffed, biting down on his ear. She pushed him away after a moment, “let's have a race.”

Spectrum sighed, nuzzling into her as she rested her head on his. Aliana wasn't an affectionate soul, but occasionally little moments slipped through like these. “You're sweet too, deeeep inside, but you've got a sour coating,” Spectrum joked, allowing himself to be nipped and pushed away from her. He laughed, tilting his head to the side as she suggested a race. “Oh, you only say that because you're a good runner. What about a swim instead?”

“No,” Aliana protested, “I'm sour all the way through.” She rolled her eyes at him when he laughed, crinkling her nose at the thought of a swim. “What is with you and water? You're a helix, you're not meant to enjoy being wet so much. I thought you'd get enough of that with all this random rain that happens here!” As if to confirm her statement, the once sunny sky which had become cloudy during their bickering, opened up and rain started streaming down, soaking them almost instantly. “Ah!”

“Water is fun,” Spectrum protested, “it allows you to move freely and you can float and dive.” Spectrum loved water, it allowed him to be free, though he'd never admit it, floating under water, surrounded by the slightly warmed water of the lakes and rivers, was one of the only moments he felt truly safe. Spectrum laughed as the sky opened, ignoring Aliana's disgusted shriek, he turned his face up to the falling water. It was still warm, and the water was a soothing cold. He was soaked again, having still been slightly damp before. “Come on, we can dry out in my shrine,” he called out to her over the sound of falling rain. He nudged her, encouraging her to follow him as he ran into the surrounding forests. He had a shrine as his den, a small abandoned and decrepit one but it was home. Dodging the trees and the falling rain which dripped through the upper trees. It took only a matter of minutes to find his shrine, a collection of stones and a tattered roof held up by only two columns. It was not a pretty sight but, crawling up onto the shrine floor, beneath the roof, the rain wasn't able to get them.

Aliana followed Spectrum instantly, calling back, “you have a shrine?” She sounded bemused, imagining a beautiful stone shrine with a statue of Spectrum in the center, where people go to worship him. She laughed at her own thoughts, racing after him through the forest and shivering as she went. Despite the warm temperature, she was shivering pitifully when they approached the shrine. Crinkling her nose, “that is your shrine? It's a dump,” she announced, crawling up beside him and shaking, trying to dispel the excess water from her fur. Flopping down to the floor, she curled up, watching him curiously.

Spectrum huffed playfully, shaking off as well. “Do you have a shrine? No. So don't make fun of mine. It's the best I could find, most other shrines have already been claimed by larger packs and I for one do not want to challenge them. I'm just a pup to them,” he rolled his eyes and flopped down beside her, resting his head on her back like he had been doing before. Yawning, he asked, “do you have to go back to your family tonight?”

Aliana rolled her eyes, “why don't you join a pack? You like people enough, you'd probably be a good member too,” she said, shivering a little and moving closer to him as he laid next to her. He was wet too but his body heat came through the damp fur easily. Glancing out into the pouring rain, she shook her head. “No, Mother's not expecting me back for a few days at least, it takes a day or so to get back to nuetral from here anyway,” she explained. “I assume I'm welcome here?” she asked, glancing at him. “At least for tonight?”

“Me? In a pack? Nah, I don't have that 'together' mentality you need for a pack,” Spectrum announced, stretching out beside her. “I'm more in it for the 'me' aspect, plus, having to listen to someone else? Not for me,” he laughed, “now, if you had a pack, then maybe I'd join. I'm use to having to listen to you, bossy-pants.” He bit at her ear in a gesture which she usually did to him, though a lot gentler then she had. “Of course you're welcome, Ali!” Spectrum said brightly, nuzzling as close as possible to her. “You're always welcome at my shrine. If you just want to get away from your family, or want a holiday, or if you want to play or anything,” he grinned up at her from where he'd tucked himself under her chin. “I always have time for my Ali.”

Aliana snorted, “what are you talking about, Spectrum? You're such a follower, it's not even funny. You'd be the perfect Omega to any pack.” She reared up a bit as he nuzzled himself under her chin, dropping her head down to rest over his. “Thanks,” she said softly. “I'll keep that in mind then.” It was nice to have a place she could escape too and, glancing out of the shrine, even if it was wet and miserable out there, it was still a beautiful place. “You'll change your mind when you get a little girl of your own though,” she teased lightly. “You're too affectionate a helix to be unmated for long.”

Spectrum whined lightly, “a follower? Omega? Ali, don't be mean. I'm going to be an Alpha like you and we can run a pack together,” he was joking though. Spectrum had no desire to lead and he doubted Aliana wanted the responsibility of a whole pack on her shoulders. Spectrum hid a wince at Aliana's words, dropping his head down to rest on the floor, Aliana's still resting on top of his. “Nah, that's not going to happen. My Ali's the only girl for me,” he said, sounding upbeat and bright but his eyes were dull as he stared off into the rain.

“I'm going to be a beta,” she scoffed, “I bet you'll be a omega.” She wasn't teasing this time, Aliana had her whole life almost completely planned out already and Spectrum always featured as an omega. She shifted when Spectrum laid down closer to the ground, flopping her head down so she still covered his head with hers. “Really?” A warmth blossomed in her chest at his words, and she hesitated, the silence stretching between them. “Do you love me, Spectrum?” She wasn't sure which way she wanted him to answer, yes or no. Yes would mean she had someone to loved her unconditionally, as Spectrum always did but no, no meant he would move on and he would be happy too and Aliana would be left alone, without him. She selfishly hoped for yes, even if she couldn't return the sentiment.

Spectrum squeezed his eyes shut at the softly spoken question, a pang jabbing his heart. She sounded scared and vulnerable, nothing like the Ali he knew. His Ali was bold and bright, she was clever and thoughtful, she was insecure at times especially when it came to who she was, she was a little silly sometimes when she pretended to be brave. She was a coward but she didn't get scared easily, or at least, she never let that fear take hold of her. “Yeah,” he replied quietly, curling further up against her. “Yeah, I do.” There was nothing else he could say. “I do.”
