Simply because you don't conform.If you act like,or like things that the general population doesn't,you get label as a weirdo and people (for some screwed up reason) think thats a good reason to bash you and keep you separated.
she makes a great point, but i can take it a step further. my dad is a psychologist and has explained to me (on top of what samantha said) that people fear what they dont understand, so they view us as a threat.
Humans have a long history with this. If you look at Japanese culture/ history (I am not using this to diss Japanese people, Im going in to Japanese history) they almost completely cut them selves off from the rest of the world till the 19th century. They did this to keep their culture 'pure', they did not want out side influences. Now this is an extreme case, generally, people dont like differences because they 1) dont understand and therefore fear them and 2) they dont know how to deal, its like you popped their perfect little bubble.
When humans are hurt or scared they lash out, they dont like to feel threatened even if it is only a perceived threat not a real one.
