It wasn't yet daybreak, yet Arthur was already sitting on his bed, wide awake, staring at the wrapped up box in his hands. He had spent the day before frantically trying to decide what to get the happy-go-lucky nation for his birthday, as well as juggling work. Sleep barely paid the Englishman a visit the night before and now it was the early morning of July 4th.
It's still too early to leave, isn't it..?
He nodded to himself as all his little faeries were still asleep. He sighed impatiently, smacked the gift on his table and went to make another cup of tea.

---

Somehow, Arthur had managed to kill the time and arrived a couple of hours late to America's, as he was planning. The house seemed buzzing with other nations already, England was almost nervous to go in. He stood staring at the door for a while before a fox, dressed rather smartly, standing on it's hind legs, ran up behind Arthur and pushed him into the doorbell, setting it off.

"Go on, old chap, he's waiting, and so are you!"

"Don't do that! Go away, you weren't meant to follow me. Alright alright, I'm--"
But before he could finish, the door opened abruptly. England stood there rather startled for a second, ushering a hushed 'Shoo!' to the fox before greeting the nation at the door.
"Uhh, hey... Sorry I'm late."

It soon got pretty busy with countries. People laughing with a few beers in hand. It was fine to have alchohol, Alfred was 19 now.
Thank God for McDonalds!
If it wasn't for them he wouldn't have had anything to give the others to eat. So much for last minute plans.

"Maple syrup and bacon? Ew!"
It was turning out pretty good, everyone seemed happy. America was even able to talk to his little brother whilst versing Japan on the new games console he got. Not that he didn't still ignore Canada and shout out something that was inapropriate but with a huge grin on his face whilst giving the general continant of North America a bad name. It probably would have worried Matthew if he hadn't done so.
Germany had an Italy clinging to him probably in fear of something. France was trying to get Spain to do strange things and seemed to be succeeding.
The bell rang.
Who's that?
America passed the controller to Korea and looked around to see who could be missing...
"Arthur!"
Alfred opened the door shouting the nations name at him, smiling crazily.
"Uhh, hey... Sorry I'm late."
"It's cool, you still made it right?"

Arthur scratched the back of his head rather sheepishly.
"Yeah, I'm here now, I guess."
Christ, England, what's wrong with you?!

He thought he'd brighten up as soon as he saw America's cheery face greet him, but that only seemed to dampen his spirits even more. Not that he wanted Alfred to be upset or anything, God no, but it made him think all the more that he just wasn't missed.
Arthur mentally stabbed himself.
Stop it, you're acting stupid, be normal.

He looked around the nation blocking the doorway. The music and hubbub seemed so much louder with the door open.
Well, duh.
Arthur recognised many of the voices, happy and excited chatter ran through the house.
"Seems like you've got yourself a full house. You managed to tidy up for all these lot? I'm impressed." He shot America a somewhat forced smirk before jabbing him in the ribs.
"So you gonna let me in or what?"

"Tidy up... heh yeah sure!"
It was always obvious when Alfred's smile wasn't so genuine, which was a rare occurance but this time he had a guilty look about his face. But the forced smile turned into a genuine childish pout when he got jabbed in the ribs.
"Nah, it's more fun watching you stand outside and I don't like inviting violent people in."
Alfred joked though he didn't know why.
America moved aside and gestured for him to come inside pretending to bow and be gracious like how he saw an English 'gentleman' to be.
He was beaming like an idiot again.

"Most of the food's been eaten, but I guess you would prefer your radioactive gruel anyway, huh?"
Alfred laughed. England's food certainly wasn't edible.

Stepping into the house, he slapped Alfred on the head as he walked past him bowing.

"That's what happens if you don't bow low enough."

He criticised with a smirk. He sort of ignored the comment about his food, it became a mandatory thing for his cooking to be mocked, and he didn't really care that there wasn't much there for him to eat either, he hadn't had much of an appetite that day anyway. Still, the whack on Alfred's head was made to be just that little bit more hard for that comment...
It became rather evident that the house wasn't so packed after all, it was just the sounds of the nations being loud and forcing their voices over the music. Somehow, this notion of Arthur not missing much raised his mood a little more. He took off his blazer and placed it on one of the hooks near the door. Despite it being the middle of a scorching American summer, proud England still always carried his blazer around with him. Reaching into his pocket, he stared at the little box for a while, speaking with his back toward Alfred.
"You... better appreciate this..."
He mumbled, turning back round to face him, holding the box out in front of him. Although this was meant to be a supposed friendly gesture, Arthur couldn't help but look away, a little pout forming on his lips.

"Um, yeah... Happy birthday..."

((OOC| I, uh, haven't figured out what the present is yet, so don't open it just now, 'kay...? ^^;;
'KAY, I've figured it out, no worries, you can have him open it 8D ))

Alfred straightened up and rubbed the back of his head. The hit was hard but not hard enough to knock the smile off of the American's face.
"Hey you gotta be nice to me 'cause it's my brithday!"
Compared to the Englishman, Alfred seemed pretty underdressed. He was wearing tatty frayed jeans and a blue t-shirt although he had at least tried to smarten up by putting an unbuttoned shirt on top.
He actually got me something!
Alfred took the box and mouthed 'thanks' with a larger beam than usual. Before opening it he examined the box carefully, because looking at the packaging would give it all away. He pulled it close to his ear and shook it lightly with his tongue stuck out as if in attempt to help him think, but it didnt make a noise when it was shook.
"What is it?"
For some reason it took Alfred a while to realise that he should open it to find out...

"I've just given you a present, I think the qualifies as 'being nice to you', t**t."
Arthur let out a controlled chuckle as he watched the American examine his present. As he did so, he took the little time to take in the American attire. Oh, it was so very him, Arthur took contentment in that, somehow.
"What is it?"
"Well, open it, idiot." He remarked, poking him in the forehead.
Inside the box was a brilliant silver pocket-watch, engraved with the British monarch coat of arms. The links of the chain were tiny and delicate, each metallic bend as sensitive as the next. Upon the flap of the actual watch, where the engraving lay, was a scratch, a bit of a dent, blemishing the exquisite piece of clockwork. Inside, upon the face of the watch, the glass appeared to be two-toned and so if looked at in the right light, the intricate clockwork and gears from the inside could be admired.

Arthur's gaze softened as it was pulled out of its box.
"Heh... I bet you don't remember that, do you?"
I wore it on that day, too...

America pulled the watch out, dangling the beauty from it's chain.
"This... I recognise it..."
Alfred's smile was soft. He put the box to the side so he could admire the gift properly. His fingers ran across the engraved surface. They followed the detail and the dent and scratches that showed it had a histroy.
"Yes, it's deffinitely Arthur's."
He had said his thoughts outloud but it dind't bother him. "You used to wear this, right?"
A small laugh escaped America's lips as all the good memories came rushing back of the days he would look forward to every visit Arthur gave him. But those were the days he thought he was an awesome cowboy too. He was just a kid and now it's a different kind of excitement when he waits for the next time he can see Arthur.
But, did you even wear it on that day?

A sneaky, involuntary blush made its way onto Arthur's cheeks as the look of recollection hit Alfred.
Wow, he actually remembers...
"Yeah, I did... I've had it for a very long time, it's been through a lot... You better not be thinking I just dug this old thing up and decided I had nothing better to give you."
Arthur frowned, rather defensively.
"... This was special to me. And, well, I thought you're old enough to look after it now. An official sign of your independence, or something like that..." He said the last few words looking away and scratching the back of his head, sort of leaning on the wall. He remembered Alfred playing with it as a kid, being so cute and inquiring, Arthur telling him to be careful with it, but always ended up patting his head, smiling. Then, it was thrown into battle, not its first battle, but a ferocious one nonetheless, where it sustained more scratches and even a dent... from where Alfred had attacked.

Arthur sighed wavered sigh and turned back to face Alfred.

"It sort of has a mind of its own... Y'know, it's really old. It decides to tick backwards sometimes... Hey look, it's doing it now.."
I never really understood that... Trying to force back time... back to when it was dentless?

Alfred looked carefully at the inside and cogs as they clicked and moved the hands. He didn't need England's approval for him now being an independent country but it was nice to know he had come around to accepting it.
"I'm old enough am I?" The way he raised his voice at certain parts made it imply that he considered himself to be grown up before now.
America watched the hands tick backwards. It was so like Arthur to have something like this. Arthur would probably blame it on 'fairies' or something equally stupid which had 'enchanted' it. America laughed.
"Thank you, Arthur."
Alfred pulled England into a hug, though he held him slightly longer than was necessary for a 'friendly' hug. He ruffled England's hair and paused before breaking away.

Ahh, I'm so stupid, he probably doesn't even like it...
He turned to his side, away from the American gaze.

"... Look after it, okay?"
He said in a rather demanding voice, albeit slightly saddened. That watch was a reminder of everything. Passed down from centuries, enduring more than it possibly needed to. Well, England was going nowhere fast, whereas America was flourishing and growing everyday. Who better to entrust it to..? Maybe he'd see it as a good-luck charm, or something of that sort.

Arthur nodded slightly as he heard a "Thanks, Arthur." but before he could say anything, was pulled into a hug. He froze for a moment, his cheeks heating up furiously, his heart pounding into the other's chest.
Bloody hell, it's just a hug. Hug back, damnit!
He wrapped his arms around the taller nation, reveling momentarily in this comfort. He closed his eyes and breathed him in, speaking into his shoulder.
"You're welcome..."
As the hug broke off, he gave Alfred a weak smile before tweaking him in the sides.

"So did all your guests have to linger in the hallway first? Heh, you better get back there, they sound restless - probably missing their host."

"Of course they miss me! But they know that I have the duty to greet guests!"
It wasn't spoken outloud but you could still hear the line; 'Because I'm a HERO!' escape the American's lips as he winked cheesily at Arthur. Although how that line managed to fit in was beyond anyone, but it was something Alfred could fit in effortlessly.
Alfred carefully put the watch in his jeans' pocket before opening the door to the living room. Or chaos. Well, having half the world in your living room was bound to be chaotic and having invited France and Italy it could only be even more crazy/loud. France seemed to have already had a few too many glasses of red wine. too...
Korea was running to China, upset about Japan being mean and beating him at the video game - which originated in Korea! (yes Sony is not Japanese). Japan merely ignored the nation for shouting ridiculous remarks.
Oh yeah! I still needta beat Kiku at that game!
"Hey Arthur! Come see what Kiku bought me!"
It was more of a demand than a request, as Alfred grabbed Arthur's wrist and pulled him along to the games console.

Canada smiled at England on his arrival, hoping to be noticed in someway. Alfred appeared not to have noticed Arthur's needs and had not offered his guest a drink.
Matthew sighed but decided to do the nice thing for the older nation and get him the drink he knew England loved best, tea.

It wasn't long before America was entranced by the video game, bashing away at the buttons, tilting the controller in several directions - not that it effected the gameplay, it just came instinctively. Japan was playing along side him on the floor, but somehow managed it calmly and added an extra grace to the art of bashing zombies.
"Uuuh, wazzat, Matty?"
Canada had returned with the drink.
He was really tempted to knee his brother in the face but then that would just be mean...

Arthur rolled his eyes at the typically American comments Alfred blurted out, almost as if he could read his mind. It was to be expected, it's not like Arthur was hoping for him to be all conserved and charming and demand they stay in the hallway for just a little longe--
Shut the f*** up.
He let out a somewhat retrained yelp as he was yanked by the wrist into the living room of absolute debacle. Even if Alfred had tidied up, it seemed his efforts were all in vain. Bottles and packets and cups and half-eaten foods were strewn about everywhere, framing the area in which all the nations sat and stood and swaggered and laughed and- oh hey, Canada. Arthur raised his hand in a sort of greeting, only to place it on the younger nation's head in a friendly, older-brother type greeting. Oh, he couldn't help it. Matthew was still as sweet and as adorable as ever to merit a pat on the head. But it was fairly short-lived as Alfred sat him down on the couch next to him, demanding he watch him 'be awesome' at some video game which Japan still seemed to be winning effortlessly. The Asian nation didn't seem to have noticed England as he walked in, but Arthur didn't mind so much, he looked rather preoccupied.

A rather airy laugh slid from Arthur's mouth as he wriggled into the couch a bit more, getting comfortable and undoing the top two buttons of his shirt. Damn, it was hot in here. Too many nations, he guessed.
"Uuuh, wazzat, Matty?"
He perked up as Canada walked up to him with a little mug of steaming tea and offered it out to him. A soft look appeared on Arthur's face as he took the mug from him.

"How kind of you, Canada. Thank you~" He said with a genuine smile of gratitude on his lips. He nudged Alfred.
"Your brother makes a much better host than you, idiot."
He smirked as he took a sip.

Ooh. Now that didn't taste right.

He raised an eyebrow at the mug. Well, it didn't taste right, but it didn't taste bad. He sipped again.
It was actually quite nice.
He smiled wildly and downed the whole mug, not caring at how hot it was.
Hiccup! Oh shi--
His head began to spin and his vision was blurred, the electronic beeps of the console penetrating his skull, making him dizzy. Dropping the mug, he fell onto Alfred's lap, slurring out,
"Mmmfgh, Ah th'nk some'un put som'in' in ma tea, Alfie..~~" He swooned, grinning, and giggled as he realised 'tea' and 'Alfie' rhymed...

Ah! No way! I died AGAIN!
Japan was pretty good at this. America had only managed to kill him once and that was cause he was in a f***ing tank! The game had come to an end and it was almost a flawless victory for Kiku.
Kiku smiled sweetly at America when he pouted in a childish manner but complimenting Japan's gaming skills nonetheless.

"Ah! Gomen, Arthur-kun! I didn't see you there. Hello."
The Japanese man gave Arthur a slight bow and an awkward smile.
Alfred was in the middle of setting up a new game when he felt something land on his lap...
"Arthur! W-what?"
Oh, someone spiked his tea? Urgh...
Now America had to put up with a drunk Arthur. He was either extra moody and moaning at America for becoming independent or doing strange.. kinky things... He wasn't sure which he disliked more.
Well, kinky things-
America just mentally shot himself.

"I'm sorry Arthur! I don't know how that happened, eh? M-maybe when I went to get the sugar someone could of..."
Canada was truelly sorry and was frantically trying to explain himself to a nation that was already half-brain-dead.

"I might not be as good a host but at least I didn't spike you tea, Artie."
America said slightly exhasperated but then grinned slyly at Canada who seemed to be frowning back.
"Could've been France, mind."

Drunkenness really was not a good look for Arthur. His head was a million miles from where he was supposed to be, his whole attire became a shambles, and, quite frankly, he really didn't give a toss about anything. To top it all off, he was an absolute lightweight with alcohol. There was no in-between stage for him - he was either 'pissed-out-his-head' drunk, or completely sober. No room for tipsiness. He obviously needed to hang out with Ireland more. Time and time again he had wound up in a state of utter embarrassment and hassle, much to the annoyance of America and a few other unfortunate nations that happen to be present, and time and time again he'd woken up with a pounding headache of regret and trauma, telling himself he'd never drink again.

Though somehow, those words had little effect.

Arthur reached up and poked at Alfred's glasses, giggling as they bounced on the bridge of his nose. He looked like an amused baby.
Suddenly, he snapped back up, as if a bullet of realisation had hit him. For a moment, it looked like he was back to normal... But that was before he looked around at all the other nations shiftily, hunching his shoulders over and placing a finger to his lips. He leaned over to Alfred, whispering in a not-so-hushed voice,
"Shhhhh... Don' tell no-one... But I th'nk 's kinda hot..."
He swayed, his expression so gleeful, before jumping to his feet.

"Yeah, 's HOT!"
He cried out, tearing his shirt off, not bothering with the tie, and threw it onto Alfred. He laughed triumphantly, losing his balance and stumbling onto the floor, still giggling, and wriggled into the carpet, babbling.

"Pub-u pub-u pub-u te go! Fish and-o chips... ♫~"
