Sloane groaned under her breath as the two went at it again, only stopping when the man who'd gone up front earlier yelled back about some girl called Amber.
She didn't know who half the people were, she'd only gotten there shortly before the massacre, but she still kept to herself.
Troublemaker, the teachers had called her, a problem child. Sloane wondered what they would be calling her now if they were even alive. She smiled wryly, absently wondering how many other soldiers of her outfit had made it, the closeminded jacks.
Sloane nearly laughed, a sudden humorous thought coming to mind. It would be a new training mission, you would be called a soldier only when you crush a zombie's head with your bare hands.
She'd already killed several that way, and smashed a few others with her boot's heel, the skull giving way like an aluminum can. A certain satisfaction came from personally killing the enemy, not one that was easily described, but rather like an ecstasy, power over another was an incredible thing.
Sloane pondered the thoughts of her traveling companions momentarily, there probably wasn't anything she wanted to know, or didn't already know.
Another shot sounded, and she heard indistinct murmurs coming from the front. Sloane wondered where the self-elected leader was taking them. Considering their conditions, it was likely to have very few people, and even better, even fewer graves. One thing the scientists had managed to find out before they died was that some sort of parasite was infecting the dead, bringing them back to "life". The scientist also found that the undead required sustenance of some sort, and since the closest thing to eat was humans, that was their main food source.
Sloane chewed on her lip thoughtfully, a habit she'd just recently picked back up. They didn't allow that kind of stuff in the military, but she was free now, if you could call being trapped in a Wal-mart truck with over a dozen other people who feared for their lives free.

((Right it was just hard to keep calling them the man and the other man, you know? ))

Bill sighed, dissapointed, "well I expected as much..." Bill looked out into the sky. They had been traveling along the highway for a good time now, the road was emptier and it was getting dark, with stars freckling the skies. Bill started to think again how to get out of this mess, going to the boonies, somewhere remote was good. Bill was sure, if they could just hold out till winter, then surely the zombies, or maybe the parasite, would die out from the weather..So he hoped.

He wanted so much for this to just be over, maybe he could adopt Nancy, the poor girl's parent's were de--undead after all. He wanted life to just be normal again, he wanted to live an old man's life, just sitting back in a rocking chair to tell the kids stories or just watch the grass grow. He laughed inside thinking how torn op he was when his wife died, he thought it was the end of the world...Then a few years later, he really learned what it meant. He was still learning it.
Bill looked back to Eric, "We're going to the country, right? How much farther till we get to a place we can hunker down in for the night?"

((It's fine.))

"It's over, eh....?" Bill shufled through the glove compartment and found what he was looking for, a trucker's best friend. He shook the bottle of pep pills. "If we have to camp out here I'll do first watch with Ben, and then you can take a shift with Jared, it may be a good idea to keep them seperated for a bit... You and Jared are near the same age I'd reckon, maybe you can cool him off a bit. I'll stick with Ben because....Well, if he was really bitten, then I want to be the one to put a bullet in his temple."

Sloane was glad when someone finally spoke up. Those two were getting irritating and she certainly didn't want to go between them.
Especially with the fuss the one man.. the woman had called him Jared...had put up about a scratch. Sloane has at least a dozen, none from the undead's doing of course, not that they would believe her.
Sloane thought about the geography of the area once it had quieted down a bit. From the Wal-mart, the closest uninhabited place was probably an hour away at the least. Sloane thought it over, and wondered if the dead could swim. If they could make it to a lake, and find a boat big enough to house a lot of people and the supplies, then maybe they could relax a bit. Wait for the dang things to starve themselves to death.
Sloane shook her head at her own idea, there were too many variables. If there was one thing she'd learned, it was to count on things to go wrong. She closed her eyes, she must be exhausted if she could sleep in a place and time like this.
Her dreams were disturbed, and shed no light on the current situation. They were meaningless...mindless, the only good they did was to keep her awake when she opened her eyes again.
Sloane rubbed her eyes with her tanned hand, it would probably be best to get an update from their "leader"...the driver.
Removing her cap, Sloane swept her hair back before replacing the cap, tipping the edge low over her face. Taking care to avoid others in her path, Sloane made her way to the door she'd seen earlier and slid it open.
" So, how're we doin' Cap'n?" She asked, a slight accent on the edge of her words, something not usually there. She seemed to acquire accents she heard for a while, and she'd been hearing accents ever since she'd made it to the Wal-mart. It only made sense that one was now heard in her voice.

Eric glanced back at Sloane and smiled.
"Well, the twelve of us have five gallons of gas, a couple clips of ammo per person, two- no, three bags of beef jerky." He said, tearing open a bag with his teeth while the other drove the truck. "Pass it around," Eric said after stuffing a large piece into his mouth before continuing. "Several bottles of Jack under the seat and a couple boxes of canned diners."
He casually dodged a sexless carrier, weaving in and out of two broken down cars. It was missing all of its hair, its scalp having been torn off along with half of its face. The flesh had been peeled back, exposing skull and an empty eye socket. The nose had been ripped off as well, a gapping hole of blood and bone. Knowing that that... thing had had a family, friends, possible children...
It sickened Eric, reminding him of others who he had seen equally disfigured. The difference was that he had been there, seen them struggle and scream as their flesh was torn away by the mouthful.
"Do either of you have a large rubber hose or know how to hot-wire a car?" He asked, glancing over at the two, then back at the road. If they could find another car, they would be better off, even if it was just a better chance that one of them wouldn't be flipped.
If it didn't work, they could siphon it.

Sloane grabbed a piece of the jerky before handing the bag over to the older man sitting in the passenger seat. Chewing the piece intently, Sloane realized that she hadn't known how hungry she was till just then. Silently copying the recited list to memory, she swallowed, five gallons wasn't going to last long in a rig like this.
The truck swerved a little to pass around one of the undead, but she kept her balance easily. Sloane silently prayed that her father, as much as she dis-liked him at times, hadn't met the same fate.
She lapsed into memories of when she was little, and her father would take her to every military event he could get to. It was obvious that he'd wanted a boy, but that hadn't stopped him. And Sloane had acquiesced to his unspoken request. She had become the best of all she could possibly be, and according to some, that was pretty dang good.
"...How to hot wire a car?"
Sloane immediately came to attention, and nodded before realizing that the driver was faced forward and probably couldn't see her.
"I used to," She said, smiling inside, that was one of the reasons she was a 'troublemaker'. "A while ago, but I've heard it's just like riding a bike, you never forget."
" A while seems so long ago." Sloane reflected to herself, after all she'd been through, it seemed a very long time ago.

"Alright then. Grab some guns and ready any one willing to fight." Eric said with almost a smile, glancing over at Sloane and Bill. "We are gonna gank ourselves some more cars."
It would be simple. He would help Sloane clear a way to a working car, guard her while she got as many working as she could, then load people in. They would have to work fast though... If even one of those things was around, they would attract more.
"You two up for it?"

Sloane returned the driver's smirk with a wry one of her own, she wished he woud stop looking around and keep his eyes on the road. There was enough wreckage as it is.
Sloane saluted mischievously and headed back to where the rest of the escapee's were holding the hundredth pity party since they'd started the trip.
"We're going to be stopping temporarily in just a little while and the Cap'n would like volunteers to fight." She announced, her accent growing a little stronger.
A few men including Jared, and the one woman who'd scolded the two stood up, balancing themselves against the truck walls.
Sloane nodded her head slightly in approvement.
"Good, now each of you, grab a gun."
She turned around and went back to the front of the truck, grabbing her duffel back as she did.
" It's all set, we've got four more. By the way, since we're all gonna die anyway, I'm Sloane."
She would've normally offered her hand to shake, but the driver was a little indisposed at the moment, so she kept it at her side.

Eric grinned, nodding his head. He took the next exit and slowed to a crawl in front of a hand full of parked cars. Most been ripped open, and the occupants dragged to a gruesome demise. It was a grizzly scene, blood stains were spread all across the blacktop, bits of dried flesh and broken glass lay scattered over the road. Although there were several dead visible, none were moving. That didn't mean that any weren't in hiding.
"Alright, I am gonna open the back up and let you guys out. Bill, you stay here in the cab and make sure we have a shot back if things get bad." Eric said quickly, glancing at both mirrors. He scooped up his shotgun and fire axe in hand, jumped out of the cab. He made sure to leave the keys in ignition and leave the truck running.
Eric circled in a wide arch around to the back of the truck, making sure to look in every direction. No flesh-eating horrors in sight.
He got to the back of the truck and pulled open the latch, letting the armed survivors out.
"We are gonna have to do this fast. Stick in a group, keep your eyes open, and for god's sake, don't stick your hand into an unchecked car." Eric's view darted over to Sloane. "We are going to be hot wiring several cars and taking them with us, so lets get started."
And with that, they descended onto the eerily quite roadway.

Grabbing a couple extra clips from her bag, she dropped it off in teh front before heading towards teh back, stuffing the ammo in her pocket.
The back door opened as Sloane unbuttoned the clasps that held her gun and knife in place. Jumping lightly to the ground, she listened attentively to the driver's instructions. Sloane was glad he'd asked the older man to watch the truck, it may have only taken her a minute to hot wire a car before, but she was out of practice.
The first car she came across had a flat, it wasn't about to go anywhere, the most it could be used for was siphoning.
The next vehicle appeared more promising. Drawing her gun, Sloane peered through the busted back window. The inside, though disgusting, was free of any...annoyances. Crouching low a full foot from the car, she checked underneath...all clear.
"This one's good." She whispered quietly behind her.
Reaching to open the door, she growled under her breath when she found it was locked. That would make sense, the driver must have pulled through back, which would explain the remnant of blood on the seats.
"Gonna have to do this the hard way, keep an eye out." She hissed, moving back to the rear of the car, wondering why she was whispering. If the zombies didn't know they were already here, they would soon enough. Crawling in through the broken window, Sloane was careful to avoid any left over glass. The back seat was littered with broken glass, and cruched quietly under the pressure of her army issue boots. Moving quickly up to the front, the first thing she did was unlock and open the driver's door.
Moving the seat into a position to where she reach the car's wires easily, Daria pried it open and gently pulled the wires out. Finding the proper ones after a moment of searching, she cut about an inch of the plastic off of each of the wires then twisted the showing metal together. The engine roared to life and Sloane smiled, she hadn't lost her touch after all.
Sloane wired one more car before they started getting to where the bodies lay. Sloane could feel her adrenaline rising, the pace was beginning to pick up.
She checked over the next car quickly, she was getting the feeling that she didn't want to stick around here too much longer, and her instincts were never wrong as far as she knew.
Fixing up the wires, she sighed impatiently as the engine refused to start, sliding out of the front, she popped the hood, hoping the problem was something easily fixed. Checking quickly over all the obvious spots, Sloane's eyes lit up as she found the problem and returned her gun to her sideholster, she needed both hands. Somehow one of the spark plugs had gotten disconnected.
Readjusting the plug, she stepped back a couple feet, another car behind her, and gave the ok sign to the rest of the group. She felt a sudden tug on her left foot, and cried out in surprise as the ground came flying up at her face. Twisting so that her shoulder hit the asphalt instead, she grabbed her gun from it's holster and swung it around, pointing it directly at...a young, live, man.
"Oh! You're not--are they gone?"
He sounded desperate, and Sloane tipped the gun away.
"Think so, haven't seen any of them. Come on out."
She stood up quickly and helped the young man to his feet, holding up a hand to stop the others.
"It's okay, he's one of us." She told them, turning back to the man who'd been hiding beneath the car. Shw could see that he was a little taller than her now that they were standing, and his dark hair was tousled pretty badly. She could see that he was dancing along the edge of insanity when she looked into his pale blue eyes, it must have been hell watching every die like that.
"I'm Sloane. How about you, got a name?" She asked.
"Jase. My name's Jase."

((Whoops, super long post. Sorry.))

Eric and the others fanned out through the cars, checking each for anything. A weapon, food, gas or a corpse.
The first car he checked had a figure seated in the front. Eric readied himself and his axe, carefully looking around before he neared the front. The door was wide open, and the driver was still there. He looked perfectly fine, staring directly ahead. His mouth was wide open, almost as if in surprise, a slight trickle of blood dribbling out of his mouth and onto his shirt. The man couldn't have been dead long, yet there were no signs of bite marks or any problems. It was if he was alive, trapped in a single moment in time. Eric took a step forward and almost screamed when the man's head slowly turned; revealing that only half of his neck was intact. There was no way he could have been alive. The neck was gnawed to the bone, pieces of vertebra hanging by sinews and congealed fluid. His entire right side was drenched in blood, his arms having also been sampled. it had been torn free, strangely missing from the car or anywhere around.
Eric brought his axe up, still gazing hypnotically at the corpse. Its mouth widened, biting at the air and uselessly lifting its other arm and clawing in his direction.
He had seen enough.
Eric brought his axe into the thing's skull, biting into it's forehead and cleaving into the base of its skull. Bits of blood splattered across the seat and the thing slumped into the seat. Eric swallowed a lump in his throat and quickly looked around. No one else seemed to have met anything yet, which was good.
The less of those things that were around meant that they had more time, or at least more reassurance.
When he heard commotion, Eric rushed over, finding Sloane helping a young man to his feet. He must have hidden in one of the cars, maybe in a trunk.
"Are you hurt?" Eric blurted, realizing he cared more for himself whether he was bitten or not. Something about that unsettled him, but he decided he would deal with it when they had the time.

Bill drummed his hands on the wheel, ready to go at a moment's notice as he told a story to little Nancy, her feet swinging back and forth over the seat.

"And they were all comin' at me see, but I held off all of 'em with mah chainsaw, they kept comin' left an' right, I swear I took out thirty before they even started to thin out a bit." Nancy looked up, "You managed to take out that many?" Bill nodded, smiling "Ho yeah, I could've gone all night if I had enough gas." Nancy looked worried, "What did you do when you ran out of gas?" Bill shrugged, "Yeah I just had to start clubbin' 'em with the blade as I pushed my way out." Nancy looked around, "I hope Eric and the others get back soon, what are they doing?" Bill shushed her, "Now that Eric fella's a smart young man, he's got a good head on those shoulders and I think he knows what he's doing....But I'm starting to get a bit worried too."
