My first couple songs I remember learning are as follows: Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana Highway To Hell - AC/DC Back In Black - AC/DC B.Y.O.B - System of a Down Master Of Puppets - Metallica Beast and the Harlot - Avenged Sevenfold Thunderstruck - AC/DC Unholy Confessions - Avenged Sevenfold Behind Me Lies Another Fallen Soldier - As I Lay Dying Everlong (Acoustic) - Foo Fighters
I know plenty more, but those were my first ones..
I found that if you continuously challenge yourself and apply what you learn into practice and other songs, you have a better understanding of music and technique, which helps you when it comes to writing your own stuff.

Do what Shadowkin said. Play what you like, but don't settle for anything. Go for the hard stuff.
My first songs were Crazy Train and Paradise City.

My first song I learned was by ear because my computer was way slow to load the page on ultimate-guitar.com where I get my tabs. It was Rosetta Stoned by Tool. Actually, before that, I learned parts of a few Metallica songs. Don't really remember what ones but yeah. Right now I'm learning Vicarious by Tool, got it down just need to get the details.
