Cadassi fought a small wave of panic. He hadn't meant to discourage her, just inquire more info. Quickly jumping up , he grabbed her hand and starting pulling her to her feet.

"You know, maybe it won't matter all that much. I mean, I stop breathing when I'm in water, so maybe not having legs won't matter at all!" he stated in a rush, hoping to she wouldn't back out on him now.

Memphis was shocked by his change of mood and pulling her up. Still, he seemed happier and that was a start. "Wait did you say stop breathing?" Having forgotten about the gills on him she was worried he meant he died in the water. "That's not a good idea..."

Cadassi paused and thought about his previous words. He had been so busy trying to pursuade her to go through with the lesson that he hadn't been focusing on what he was saying.

"Oh." He chuckled sheepishly and shuffled his feet a bit; turning dark blue again. "Yeah, I did. I have no idea how to operate these gill thingys, so I can't breath underwater. Or in water. Period."

He wouldn't admit it but he really did want to learn how to swim and if she was backing out he wasn't sure he could find a substitute. I mean, who knew water better than a mermaid.

"What if you teach me how to breathe in water first?" he suggested, hoping it was possible.

Memphis looked to his face and then to his gills. She too had gills but they were on her sides. Still, they looked like they might be the same. "Okay, sug. Let's try that." The girl smiled before walking back to the water.

Once there she dove in. After a few moments she popped her head above water. "Okay, for me and my kind once in water our legs become tails and we breath through our gills." She then pointed to where her's were located. "Just remember to use them and not the air lungs." At least that's how she thought it worked. Hopefully this didn't kill him.

Cadassi's face crinkled in confusion. "But how do you know which is which?" he asked, eyeing the water nervously.

To his credit, he did move toward the water and wade out to his knees. Turning his attention back to his teacher, he pointed to his gills. "I'm not sure if I understand how to know the difference between breathing through my lungs and breathing through my gills." he admitted, slightly embarrassed.

If he was honest, he had never really tried to seperate the two. He had just prayed that they would dissapear. Which wouldn't help him if he started to drown.

Memphis looked at the male and then back at herself. This was a hard one. She had her gills her whole life and before she was a child she could go on land. It was the necklace that let her have legs and breath air. This must have been very different for the demon shark male.

"Well, for me it's like instinct takes over. Once in the water the gills knew to breath instead of the lungs..." Memphis now wondered if she even had lungs or if it was just magic. Maybe magic would work for him too.

Cadassi thought about what she said. He had never really tried this particular exercise often enough to see if instinct would take over or not. His few bumbling attempts when he was younger had scared him so bad he still had nightmares sometimes.

But she had a point. If he had gills, then his body would know how to use them. It was the way of things. "Your right. I think I'm going to try it." he warned her.

Straightening his shoulders, he gave her a cautionary warning. "If things go wrong, just get me back to shore. Once I dry off, I should start breathing again. ...I think. Ok?" Without waiting for an answer, took a few steps and dived right in.

Memphis nodded and watched him dive in. The teen was hoping she would not have to pull him out of the water. He was much larger then her and then on top of that she would have killed him!

Memphis dove under and the water. Under there she began to scan for him. It was so pretty under the water. Coral and other see light bringing colors to the deep blue.

Cadassi sank like a rock and sat about three feet to her left. Still holding his breath, he waited for something to happen. Nothing did. Reaching up, he gave his gills a tentative touch and shuddered when they moved under his fingers.

That was a good sign, he guessed, but they still weren't breathing in the air that he needed. In fact, his chest was starting to tighten and burn from lack of oxygen. If he didn't figure out how to work those blasted air slits soon, he would run out of air.

Memphis swam over to him. "Okay, sug? Working?" She didn't think it was and wasn't sure if she could understand her underwater. What about this? She swam over to give him a kiss of air. It was such a mermaid thing to do. Only if he wanted and the gills weren't working.

Cadassi frowned in confusion. What on earth was she trying to do? Closing his tightly in pain, as the burn in his chest had decided to increase by tenfold, he shook his head and pointed ot his gills, the motions clear.

His gills were not working. In fact, they were just sitting there, swaying in the ocean current. Which was pointless for him, since black dots were starting to form behind his eyelids.

Memphis got that it wasn't working. She wanted to give it more time. Maybe being close to death would be it, or she would give him the 'kiss of life' that was a kiss with air.

After a little while the teen decided she could let the poor guy die. So, she pushed her face close to his and tried to give him a kiss with her mouth full of air. If he didn't accept it then she would just pull him up instead.

Cadassi's eyes widened and he stifled a small gasp as she placed her lips on his. Confused and somewhat embarrassed, he didn't move at first. He had no clue what she was doing but he didn't want to say anything. Maybe it was some mermaid trick for helping him relax... He couldn't help the small blush that crept across his features or the sudden quickening of his heart beat though.

He wasn't sure what he should do next until he noticed that he could breath. Without suffocating or dying!

With a start, he jerked away and touched his now fully functioning gills. Giving a few tentative breaths, he jumped up and danced a little in the soft currents of the sea. "It worked!" he declared, reaching foward and giving tje small, blue mermaid a big hug. "You did it!"

Memphis leaned back after she was done. She watched as he knew took in air with his gills. Well, now that was neat. "That was sure something. How does it feel?" The mermaid swam around the shark boy looking him over. It was neat to see a demon underwater breathing like she did. And that her kiss helped him out more then she thought it would. The girl couldn't help having a big grin on her face.

"Now that they work, want to swim?" Memphis hadn't thought him that yet. Breathing was first as it was most important.

Cadassi nodded eagerly. "Sure. I mean, I've never even been this close to water, let alone under it. Is it always this... light and colorful?" he asked, reaching out to caress a small clump of seaweed.
