Neflheim looked around the playground, thinking about what game to play with Joshua to pass time. He looked up towards Joshua and realised how big he had grown. Frowning at a little at the mystery of how he grew up faster, Neflheim tried to think of a game they can play without too much difference in their abilities.
Kicking a small mount of sand, Neflheim suddenly had an idea. Jumping up and down excitedly, Neflheim said "Lets make a sand castle or a sand fort!"

Joshua nodded, that seemed easy enough and it did seem like it'd be less likely to be unfair to either one of them. "Okay, let's make a castle. How about you build the walls, and I'll make the moat?" He suggested with a smile. And with that, the boy started to dig. He dug deep enough to make it look like a convincing moat, for a castle of the size they were making. He didn't make it go all around yet, because the castle hadn't been built.
"I bet you're a really good builder, Neffy." He commented, before continuing his task.

Neflheim chuckled as he packed the sand into a neat wall, his touch causing the water in the sand to freeze a little, making it hard and compact - The type of sand best for building walls. His little hands worked on the walls, kneeling as he worked hard.
Every once in awhile, Neflheim would stand up and say "Look Josh! Isn't it neat?", hoping that the bigger boy would approve of his handiwork.

Joshua kept going on the moat, until he looked up when his friend spoke. "You're doing really well, Nef." He complimented his friend easily. "You're really good at making sand castles. I bet you could even get an award for it! Maybe when you're in school, they'll even have competitions for sandcastle making!"
And so saying, he went back to his moat. He dug all the way around, and then started to make a 'draw bridge', which was really just several twigs put across the moat he'd made.

Neflheim looked at the now well packed walls and gave a sigh of satisfaction. Turning to the bigger boy, Neflheim noticed the well dug out moat and asked "Should we put water into that?" Scrambling around the walls, Neflheim looked around for a place to get water but found none. Facing Joshua once more, he dejectedly said "Looks like there is no water..."
He walked back around the walls and began to pack the sand to make the castle.

"Nah, we don't need water," Joshua said with another one of his bright smiles. "We can pretend." Pretending was fun; he couldn't remember the last time he'd pretended with Neflheim, though. Had it been at the picnic they'd gone on together as toddlers? Maybe his friend had forgotten how? Josh would remind him!
The older boy took a pencil out of his pocket, and picked up a popsicle stick. He stuck the side with the coloring on it into the ground, before drawing a smiley face on the tip sticking out. "This is a knight," Josh explained. "He's protecting the castle from the evil dragons that are trying to steal the princess away. But don't worry, the good guys always win." The good guys always win. That was basically Joshua's motto.

Nelfheim thought about it and agreed with Joshua. There really wasn't a need to have real water, pretending would be just as fun if not more interesting. Clapping his hands together, Nelfheim said "Yes! We should pretend! I'm sure it will be fun."
Just as he was packing more sand to make the castle, Neflheim noticed Joshua taking out a pencil and drawing something on the popsicle stick. Observing him carefully, Joshua began to explain about the stick. A smile broke out on Neflheim's face and he picked up his own popsicle stick.
Passing the stick to Joshua, Neflheim said "You can use mine too Josh."

Joshua smiled at his friend, relieved that the toddler hadn't forgotten how to pretend after all. "Yeah, it will be," he agreed with another smile. "We can pretend the moat's really a river with crocodiles. Did you know? I almost caught a alligator with Polly! We were going to give it to her as a present--oh, alligators are a lot like crocodiles... Only... Well. I think one of them's bigger than the other, and one has a different kind of teeth, but I can't remember which."
He paused in his confusion, and looked up to see his friend holding out another popsicle stick. "Thank you," Josh said, taking it with equal politeness. He made a frowny face on it. "This can be the bad guy," he explained with a nod. "The knight'll fight him to save the princess. The bad guy controls the evil dragons. Maybe the dragons are really under a spell and are good dragons, only they don't know it yet!"
