Uhhh hell no, he's so not weak, he controls sand but everytime when he fights he seems to be holding back.

Cursed_Gaara SkryeHokage my friends brought this up. and the gourd is light as a feather, its MADE OF SAND, and his chakra automatically picks up the sand, he cant feel its weight. if say, naruto were to wear that gourd itd be impressive tho. but sadly, even though hes the coolest anime character of all time, hes pretty weak without the sand. he NEVER uses any shuriken or anything, so...but like u guys have said, he makes it a point to have sand. but look at lee, lee almost beat gaara even with the sand. ok there is some things to correct here. 1st of all the gourd is made out of sand yes. but the reason why he uses it so well is becuase the sand is already fused with his chakra. 2nd of all the shukaku also helps in moving sand. thats why he has that auto-defense. in that fight w/ rock lee. lee moved faster than the auto-def reflexes. and no Gaara did not almost loose.nnhe was merely toying w/ him. 2nd of all if Gaara dosnt have sand hes mostly defenseless. *see the fight between kimiaro and Gaara. kimimaro said "i see..you are defenseless w/o sand. carrying that big gourd is proof." Gaara=you are the fool. if i have sand i can do anything"* yes but even the strongest could fall beneath the feet of the week if thier mind is not strong enough. Physical strength means nothing if you don't know how to use it. Gaara is strong in more important points. Such as how to judge his opponit. As an example Naruto, though physically strong, used to be weak until he began thinking things out.

Well what happens in the anime... [spoilers]
Yes, Kimimaro does find out his weakness, but he was wrong in a way. Gaara points out in the soil around them also contains sand. Kimimaro then is surprised and dies later. Whatever. It always ends up in a happy ending. Besides poor Haku... >_<
He's weak in some aspects, but not all.

gaara became weaker when *spoiler warning* he became kazekage in the time skip. there was a part when he actually died and some old woman sacrificed her life to bring him back. i think the demon inside gaara was taken away at one point.*spoiler ended* so he's not weak, he just became weaker

MAJOR SPOILERS
Gaara is by no means weak. He is one of the strongest genin there is. second to only naruto and sasuke. (trust me theyre better than him i can proove it by when they beat him.)
The sand that defends him always defends him nomatter what, he dosnt controll that sands auto shield, thats the demon inside him doing that. This is prooven in the episode(s) when gaara racalls his past. He tries to kill himself and the sands auto shield blocks him. The demon does this because he is trapped inside gaara's body and if gaara dies so does he, as such he gives him the sand shield.
Gaara wasnt toying with lee. He was plain and simple good enough to get through gaara's near invincable guard, but in the end lee used his trump card gaara used his and gaara won.
While gaara is a genin anyone jonin or above can beat him with ease. simple as that like gai trained lee and is a tai jutsu master. or kakashi who trained sasuke who goes on to beat gaara and make him bleed for the first time in his life.

I have both read the manga and watched the anime so here goes: Lee was the first one to wound Gaara and Sasuke was the first one to make him bleed so both of you had the same scene in mind. n_n and please, when writing spoilers mark them in white.

well, when it comes to pure physical strength, no. he is not very strong. He is still a ninja, and knows the techniques thhat were needed to become a genin, but he just isnt very physicaly strong.
