PossessedByDevil minimarker I am a complete and total RENThead. I saw it with about 20 other RENTheads. We all loved it. I don't know what you are talking about. It was different from the stage version and there was a little too much dialogue, but it was still amazing! I can't believe you guys didn't like it. So you had no problem with the fact that the whole movie was basically only montages. The fact that what you own was like a music video separated from the entire movie and was a complete ripoff of the creed video "Arms Wide Open?" You had no problem that it was painful to listen to Menzel go horribly off key and notice that her voice has gotten a lot thinner these days, and she's way too old for the part now? You had no problem with the fact goodbye love was taken out of the film, and for people that have never heard rent or seen rent don't understand the reprise of I should tell you because goodbye love was cut out of the film. You had no problem not knowing that April killed herself? You had no problem that in the movie they were aloowed to hold the service of Angel in the church? There were many things wrong with this movie. Not to sound rude, but some Rentheads will like the movie. All films have their flaws. Movies made from musicals are, yes, held to a higher standard than most, but that doesn't mean there won't be those who will like it. So what if that's just some of the stuff wrong with it? Like Phantom, the opinions will be divided and never resolved simply because opinions are just that. Opinions.

There were many things wrong with this movie. There were some things that could have been changed. Some things that could have been better and others that could have been worse. I do feel Goodbye Love and Halloween should have been in it but I'm glad they will be on the dvd. I went with many people who have never seen it or had it explained to them. They loved it. They understood it. With the part about April I wish they would have shown the note form her to Roger saying we have AIDS and have it end with the words 'goodbye love' or something. That would have been amazing. But, you can't expect the people doing the film do it the exact way you picture it. With Angels death, if you think about it, they sort of got the message of it being slightl forbidden as there was no representative of the church there. But I'll admit that is quite a stretch. I'm sorry you didn't like it but I am inlove with this film. I must say take it as it is or leave it.

I honestly must say, I had very little hope when I heard who the director was...but, I loved the movie...what can I say, I've never seen the broadway play and therefore have nothing to compare it to...but I was thoroughly engrossed throughout the whole thing. Parts of the dialogue seemed to have been made for song, like in Phantom, and parts of the song could have been better portrayed spoken...it's what comes with a musical, I guess. Though I found some parts outrageously corny and others just made me down right uncomfortable, I have to say...it rocked. During La Vie Boheme, it was all I could do not to jump up and dance in the aisles...I would have if the theatre hadn't been so crowded. whee So anyway...thumbs up for music and acting...moderate thumbs down for presentation...

I thought that the dialouge was rather aquired. YEAH! That's it! That's what was driving me nuts! The dialogue was basically the sung parts only... not sung. It made me feel weird at times. Not all the time, just sometimes. It was still pretty good though. I'd see it again. In fact, I have to. My mother wants to see it sometime next week. I noticed that, and it made me...squirm uncomfortably in my seat. I can't believe they cut out "You Okay, Honey?" That, and not putting Angel in drag for the entire movie. That was annoying. It was still a good movie all around, though.

I just got back from seeing it for the second time. Yes, the second time. I had a group of Rent heads and some people who have never heard of Rent and we all loved it.
I was a bit pissed at Halloween and Goodbye Love being taken out, and yeah, changing the story with April annoyed me to no end. But did anyone else notice they toned down the thing between Mimi and Benny? That annoyed me a bit too. I guess they didn't have Angel in drag the entire time to enphasize that fact that he/she was a drag queen.
I actualy enjoyed the singing parts being spoken. Sometimes it seemed a bit forced, but, I dunno, I've just listened to the sound track so many times and I guess it was fun to recite the lines along with the movie. I actualy noticed every time they changed the script.
I was extremly pleased with how La Vie Boheme turned out. My friend and I were in the front right row the second time we saw it, just to get a good veiw of Idina's a**. It was the best scene, and we had to try extremly hard not to pull of Rocky Horror and go up to the front and dance in front of the screen. If there were less people the the theatre, we would have. Maybe next time...
Oh, did anyone know that Over the Moon wasn't lip synced, and the actual recording was done live in front of the camera?

It was still a good movie all around, though. Actually... that's how much Angel's in drag in the stage show as well. Angel's in drag from "Today 4 You" to the end of act one. He's dressed normal for the top of act two. Then it's back into drag for "Happy New Year" and outta it again for the rest of the show. So, that's about the same for the movie.

Slightly different topic but I went opening night and from a few minutes in you could tell the people behind me didn't know the story. When Angel came in in drag for the first time one person behind me whispered "It's a guy" and another person was like "No way. It is totally a girl." and they kept going back and forth for a while until the one who realized it was a guy gave in. It was really really funny.

I copy and paste out of pure laziness. There actually should only be one thread on Rent in the entertainment forum. I'll report them all except the first one, I guess. The point is, I don't like how it was directed. I think the movie would have been great if some one else had directed it. I like the show and hated the movie. The direction was awful.

That reminds me.... I hated the way they transitioned scenes! I mean, a fade is okay during all those montages, but the fades between EACH and EVER scene was to much. But... GO to the next scene! That's all ya need to do! No need to be all fancy about it.

Yeah, it was like, themovie was over everytime they did that. I went with 4 people. My friend who didn't know anything about Rent kept thinking it was over. I didn't like that they did it. Maybe that's why it seemed like a bunch of music videos. My biggest thing is that people are raving about it, but I don't understand why. They say Menzel was awesome. She may be a great performer in real life, but having her do that live where she goes off key and runs out of breath wasn't fair to her. It's a movie, not a show, she should have her best performance up there and that wasn't it.

I didn't think it was bad, but I also wasn't overly impressed with it. I had such high expectations because I'm such a huge fan, and they really weren't fulfilled. I've never been lucky enough to see the stage version so for me it was nice to have some kind of visual. I must admit I hated What You Own. It was just...pointless. I loved Santa Fe though, Jesse was awesome. I also didn't like that they didn't show that April killed herself. I went with two people who had never seen the show and knew nothing about it and they were asking me if Roger and Mimi had AIDS, so that could have been made more clear. I also didn't like Angel's funeral, it could have been done better and I wanted to see them get kicked out and called queer because it just would have made more of an impact. To me the entire movie could have been done a little better to give the songs and the plot more impact to the audience. I did like the movie and I'm going to see it again, I just think it could have been done better.

I hated the movie because of two reasons: 1) they cut so much great stuff out of it and 2) they made Alphabet City into a worse ghetto than it ever was. The scene with the poor folks and the aboveground subway are shot in San Francisco. Nothing like that exists in New York.
The songs with the homeless that I loved. "Christmas bells are ringing, Christmas bells are ringing, but not here." Isn't in the movie. The confrontation song between Mark and Roger isn't in the movie. They're in New York and Santa Fe respectively for the chorus of the song.
And good Lord. The Tompkins Square Riots is some crazy isolated riot in the venue where Maureen is doing her performance. Nothing to do with the Tompkins Square Riots at all. Kinda like Stonewall without the Stonewall riots.
I'll probably get the movie when it comes out because the cast is great. But there is so much they cut out, I was shocked to see the words "Thank you Jonathan Larson" after the movie, because I don't think he would've liked what happened to the show.
