"Children are just so trusting," Hanna said. "It's an amazing quality but a risky one, too." She shook her head, smiling. "It's hard to tell whom you can trust these days."
Kaleb's eyes widened with Remi's. "Who did something?" As his friend seemed to become more upset, he felt bad about having asked. The white-haired boy squeezed the Gingerbread girl's shoulder again, looking quite sincerely contrite. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you sad again." Wrapping his arms around her shoulders, Kaleb gave Remi a light hug, hoping to comfort her. "I wish I could make it better."

"Agreed. It makes our job all the harder as well. Not only do we have to figure out who we can trust, we also are given the job of making sure our children don't trust the wrong people too." She understood the fear, Remi had met many people on her own that she told a little too much to and it had been Lizzy's job to figure out each person's true intentions.
She hugged him back, not speaking and just being held. She didn't understand why it hurt, it was an amazing party and she had a great time with her friends. Why did she feel so sad then? What made her so upset? "Kaleb.....not all scents are good. Not all of them are like us. There's some...." She couldn't finish but she had gotten her point enough across. That's what mattered.

Hanna nodded conversationally, having nothing more to add, and she looked over at the two Scent children again. Surprised at seeing Kaleb with his arms around an upset-looking Remi, she leaned over and put a hand on Remi's shoulder, her brows knit in concern. "Oh, what's the matter, Remi? Kaleb?"
Kaleb let go of Remi and patted her arm consolingly. "I think I made her think of something sad. I didn't mean to," he told Han-hui. He looked up at Lizzy and repeated himself. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. She told me someone did something bad at the Rain party." Squeezing Remi's shoulder again, Kaleb added, "But I don't want her to tell me if it's going to make her more sad. I don't like it when my friends are sad."
Secretly proud of her boy's consideration, Han-hui leaned down and looked Remi in the eye. "That's right. A girl as pretty and lovely-smelling as Remi shouldn't be sad. A Gingerbread Scent's got to be warm and happy. Right?" She smiled kindly, hoping to coax out the girl's earlier brightness.

Following the look Lizzy bit her lip with worry and followed Han-hui's example, crouching down she wrapped a comforting arm around her little girl, holding her close. Hearing the explanation Liz's eyes took on an understanding, and forgiving look. Obviously he didn't know that bringing up the Rain event was a bad thing, and it appeared Remi's memories were still repressed. "I'm sure she'll tell you sometime later Kaleb, right now it's too fresh in her mind. It's still a little too much for her to handle." Kissing Remi's temple she let go an inaudible sigh. Why did Remi have to see it?
Wiping the remaining tears from her face with her sleeve she let her gaze drift down, momma and hanna weren't supposed to see she was upset. Still she couldn't stop the small smile and giggle that came out when Hanna tried cheering her up. "Thank you Hanna and Kaleb! I feel much better now!" Her grin grew larger and covered her face. As earlier hadn't happened at all.

Han-hui nodded silently and stood, curling an arm around Kaleb's shoulders. The last thing she wanted to do was remind someone, especially a child, of something deeply painful. She knew her share of pain, and it was one of her deepest fears that Kaleb would ever know pain like it. A loud puffing sound broke into her thoughts. The pony was poking its nose over the fence, sniffing in the hopes that the one who smelled so lovely would come back. With a brief sigh, Han-hui shook her thoughts from her own memories and squeezed Kaleb's shoulder.
"Well!" she said, nudging Kaleb towards the fence again. "Looks like the pony got tired of us ignoring it! Sorry, little pony!" She glanced around, dug in her purse, and pulled out a few coins. "Wait here, you two. I'll be right back." With a wink at the Scent children, Han-hui walked toward a little booth where a friendly-looking man was offering little paper baskets of carrots and apple slices. She bought two of each and offered half to Lizzy.
"Think it'll want to be friends again if you feed it?" she asked, grinning at Kaleb and Remi.
The pony nickered with delight. Oh boy! Treats!

Sighing Lizzy smiled down at the two. Who knew children could be so complex so early? And no one had taught her how to handle a scent child, one that magically goes from oil to child in a blink of an eye. Sometimes Liz wishes she could go give Olivia a piece of her mind for not warning her earlier but oh well. Pushing her child to join Kaleb she watched Han-hui a knowing look crossing her face as she took half the offered treats and gave the woman a greatful look before coming up behind her daughter. "Here I'll help you feed him the first time Remi and then you can try it yourself ok?"
Going next to Kaleb she smiled shyly before grinning at the pony a dreamy look covering her face as she imagined what it would be like to own her own little pony before her mom and Han-hui spoke up. "Oh I want to feed the pony!" Jumping up and down in excitement she nodded as a response to her mom before hopping up on the fence between the creature and herself. "Hey mr. pony! Would you like a treat?"

The pony nodded its head up and down and clip-clopped closer to the fence, stretching its neck out toward the little fingers waving treats. Grinning impishly, Hanna put a small carrot in Kaleb's hand and nudged him up close to the fence."Hold it out like this," she instructed, cupping her own carrot stick in her hand. "He'll come up and eat out of your hand. If you hold it out like a stick, he might not know where to stop chomping, and then you'll find yourself missing a finger or two."
Kaleb's eyes widened and he stepped away from the fence nervously. "Really??" The pony sniffed and its lips curled up and down.
Hanna laughed a little, feeling only a little guilty for teasing her child. "I don't think the pony will really bite your fingers off, Kaleb. It's just better to not get him too excited."
Kaleb's eyebrows furrowed, not sure he was convinced.
"I was just teasing, Kaleb." Han-hui sighed. "I'm sorry, okay?" She bent down and smoothed his hair affectionately. "See, I'll show you it's safe."
Extending her hand out with the carrot morsel cupped in her left hand, she tutted at the pony until it eased its nose into her hand, curling its lips over the carrot morsel and crunching contentedly. Hanna clicked her tongue at the pony and patted its nose with her other hand, wrinkling her nose as the short pony-hairs around its mouth tickled her palm.
"See, kids? Safe pony." Hanna held up her left hand and waved it at the two Scents.
