She followed after the buck, a little behind him at first, not sure of how his navigation would ensue. He stopped once, to close his eyes and... listen? She supposed this would be a decent way to navigate, should one know their territory explicitly... but it seemed odd to her that such an open and empty space could be walked the same way.

He took a few more paces and stopped once more. She pulled up beside him and stopped, also. She looked forwards, and saw a horizon of sand dunes. She looked right, and saw a great expanse of tan cut viciously to an end by the green of Mother Swamp. She looked over her shoulder, and took one last look at the lush plant life of the edge of the swamp. And finally, she looked left, at the sandy buck next to her and said, "Where to now, Grit?"

When he realized Cold was beside him he resumed his lope. He ran his eyes over her again, the Outlands had a way of changing how everything and everyone looked. He liked what he saw. In the swamp she had looked like a predator, dark, mysterious, and in control. Here her sleek lines were softened by the dazzling sunlight. Her colours shone, more prismatic than before, looking closer to emerald than olive, the stripes on her legs a darker contrast. She also looked a little bit odd, more vulnerable... perhaps the change of habitat unsettled her, but he doubted it. He stopped checking her out to look at Shadow, the snake looked content to wrap around her neck and drink in as much sun as he could.
We continue heading straight for a while, we will see an oasis. If we look a little to the left of the oasis there will be a large, smooth stone. More than likely your little friend will be there. Then we all return to the swamp and...
He trailed off, not really sure what would happen after.
Immense gratitude His.. hormonal.. side stated, sounding like he should be waggling his eyebrows.
Oh shush, thoughts like that will get me nowhere. I am here to do a good deed, that's all.

She let him look her over, again, and pretended not to notice. A young buck must get his fill, I suppose. She thought to herself, during. But when he spoke, she nodded. He knew this place that was so foreign to her, and so there was no reason to be brutal. He was cute, anyway, in that... just-barely-an-adult sort of way. She stole a glance or two over at him, as they continued to walk.

The sun was obligingly heating the snake around her neck, as well as Cold-Blood, herself. She couldn't say she didn't enjoy this sunlight. She was definitely not used to it, and she figured on a hotter day she would be uncomfortable, but today was nice. Even though she did feel a little dry... she didn't mind this change.

Dune continues his lope in silence for another few minutes. Occasionally he would close his eyes and inhale deeply, the sweet dry air of the desert made him feel like he was home. As always the whispered songs filled his ears, a persistent sound that followed him everwhere he went in the vastness, and called more insistantly and sweetly the further from it he got. Now that he thought about it, it was rare for his mind to be entirely empty of the siren calls.
The comforting taps of Cold Blood's hoofbeats were a pleasant reminder that he was not alone this time. the sun glittered off everything, adding a cruel light, sharp and merciless, bringing a dangerous and beautiful truth to everything it touched. The unfiltered sun was a cruel mistress, revealing everything some would wish to hide, while at the same time bringing beauty out in unexpected ways. The sand glittered, jewels as sharp as broken glass.
In the distance an azure patch materialized, seemingly winking in and out of existance.
There.. He looked at Cold Blood and gestured to the spot on the horizon Is where we will find your friend.
In the sunlight she was too gorgeous to look at directly, so he lowered his eyes, still loping along.

Out here, everything looked so different. She looked out at the horizon, and instead of the dark green of tall trees and marshlands, she saw the dusty expanse of the desert. This was a new experience, and not one that she would forget anytime soon. Up above, the sun shone more brightly than she ever remembered. It beat down on her, warming her up thoroughly, bringing out a sort of delight in her mind. She felt unbelievably happy, and didn't understand it. Perhaps it was the newness of such a place... or maybe it was something else entirely, she couldn't tell. Either way, she liked this sun-glazed sandland.

She turned to Grit with a smile and nodded when he said they were almost there. She imitated him, by taking a deep breath and took a moment to feel the breeze. She looked at the buck once more, and then brought her pace upto a trot. She wanted to get there as soon as possible, so that maybe they could spend some time just basking in this ray of gold.

The breeze whispering along my body, the sun warming me, a beautiful doe cantering along beside me, life does not get better then this.
Dune let his thought carry him as he closed his eyes, soaking in the perfection of this moment.
Well, almost perfect, remember that this one is not yours, no matter how desperately you want her to be.
With his eyes closed the voices whispered more insistently into his ears. They kept him on track, let him avoid obstacles and even monitor all of the wildlife nearby. The amazing thing is they did all of this with nothing more than murmured suggestions.
Pretty soon the gentle nudges of his spirits were telling him that they were very close to the oasis.
Opening his eyes he cast a glance at Cold-Blood before turning his gaze to what lay ahead of them. He was amazed anew with the beauty of this particular oasis.
The water was a clean, sparkling blue, appearing deep, cool, and limitless. The sun shone on the sparse vegetation that had taken up residence and were currently wafting their floral aromas through the air. Everything felt warm, clean and comfortable. This, he decided, would most definitely be where he would reside if he were a snake.
Here.
Was all he said to his eccentric partner.

When they arrived on site, Cold-Blood was speechless. She came to a stop and tilted her head to admire the oasis. She had never seen such a thing before and it was a thing of such beauty that she had nothing to compare it to. It had beautiful, clear drinking water breaking up the tan sands all around. It took her several moments to realize that she was just standing there staring at the scene in front of her before she shook her head and began looking for her kin-snake.

A quick glance at the flat stones around the water brought her to locating her golden friend, just where Dune predicted he would have been. He just lay there, basking in the sun, heating his thousands of tiny scales. A wide smile took over her features and she trotted upto her little companion to nuzzle him, whispering, "Don't you ever do that again! I thought I'd lost you!" A few more nuzzles before the doe realized that she was really thirsty, but when she brought her muzzle back up her eyes caught sight of the buck that had brought her here. "Thank you! Thank you, Grit. I wouldn't have found him without you." She wandered back over to this sand-colored buck and nuzzled him gently to show her thanks. She walked back over to the water and dipped her head to take a drink. After a few gulps, she raised her head and asked Grit, "What do the sunsets look like all the way out here in the open?" What was that twinkle in her eye?

There is no need to thank me, a day spent with you is more than enough reward for me.
Dune almost dropped his head and blushed at the things he was saying, but instead he decided to keep his eyes on hers. The twinkle in her eyes were reflected in his. This place was magic, a gorgeous paradise hidden in the midst of the dead desert, a place where unlikely lovers might find a happy ending?
Her second comment did cause him to blush, hoping he was not imagining the weight behind her simple words.
He closed the space between them, resting his muzzle lightly on her shoulder.
The sunset over the sand is beyond explanation, so lovely it could cause the most twisted and calloused creature to freeze in place and stare in amazement. I wonder... if it could me made more breathtaking by gorgeous company?
He decided to test this theory as he nuzzled lightly along her side, a sigh of contentment escaping his lips.
Somehow this felt right, to be here, for this sunset, with the most beautiful and provocative stranger to share his time with. He thought back to how this adventure started, his foolish dreams of even more foolish does, and he decided that right now, for today, the waking world was better than anything he could have imagined.

She took a pace back before the sandy buck came closer. His description of the sunset here in the desert made her want to stay and see it for herself. And why shouldn't she? Her logical side was telling her that she should leave now that she'd found her elusive gold companion, but her more adventurous side just pushed those thoughts aside and screamed at her to sit and stay, if only for a little bit longer!

In the end, she really didn't have a choice. She stayed silent through what Grit said, perhaps a light blush found it's way onto her cheeks at that last comment, but she simply allowed him to nuzzle her as she lifted her head to the sky awaiting the lurking horizon to take over the sky and overwhelm the blazing ball of fire that was the sun. A slightly belated nod to his question came along with a soft reply, "You may call me Snake."

She told herself that she would leave after sunset, tredge back to the swamp in the dark of the night.... but the more she thought about it... the less she wanted to leave this new-found place. She could go in the morning, after the sunrise, after all, how often does one get the chance to see sunrise in the desert?
