I think I speak for all of us when I say I HATE when people say "this one time at band camp..." but this one time at band camp, I sprayed my fellow trombone player with a spray bottle. I thought it was water. Apparently it was window cleaner... and boy did his eyes look red after that...

We have two days of freshamn band camp starting monday. I'm a sophomore.
Do you guys think I should join the freshies? I'm hoping to be section leader my junior year, and it would be nice to review and meet the new freshies. I just can't make up my mind. In a way, it would be good because I would know our freshman right away and get some review in because I kinda haven't marched much since the end of marching season, but I also think it would be a bit boring because I would know what to do, and therefore would feel like it was going slow and there was nothing to do. Anyone want to help a girl out?
Hopefully, we are getting a lot of freshies on clarinet. Were we not to get even one(I know we are getting at least one. An old friend of mine is coming next year) we would have 3-4 people, depending on if the other female sophomore kept up. Maybe even 2 people. Three of which are sophomores(me included.) Possibilities: -Only boy quits(Rumors have been spreading from friends of his), girl stays -Boy quits and girl goes back to alto sax -Boy stays girl oes to alto sax -both stay. I know me and my section leader are staying, and on clarinet.
And I might be having a interesting story for you guys after band camp. My SL is supposed to get me backXD At our end of the year band picnic we had a water fight, and some people brought a bucket. Well, the bucket was the only thing not in use, so I filled it up and sneaked up on her, pouring it over her head. We laughed and she vowed to get me back at bandcamp. Should be interestingXD

ClarinetGoddess: It would look really good if you came to help the freshmen. Last week we had pre camp and all of our freshmen had to come earlier with the section leaders, which I am not this year, but I still came early anyway. It gives them a good example to follow since the section leaders (in our band anyway) do more teaching then doing.
Anyway, I'm leaving for band camp in a few hours! =D This is my first year going to band camp as a sousaphone, because last year our camp got canceled, so it should be a lot of fun. Our section head even made us t-shirts that we're all wearing tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have lots of good stories when I get back. =P

Our band camp is at school on the baseball field. It started July 20 and ended July 31. The first three days it started at 6 pm and ended at 9 pm for the band. (Colorguard and Drumline got there at 8 am-9pm.) Thursday and Friday of the first week was from 8 am-5pm for the band. (Same as before mentioned for Colorguard and Drumline.) The second week was from 8am-9pm for everyone. We started setting our show Thursday with lunch at 12 and sectionals at 1. The second week was the same. 8am-11:45am: Work on show. 12-1: Lunch. 1-2:30-sectionals. 2:30-3:00: full band practice. (NEVER let drumline play inside. You WILL go deaf.) 3:00-5:00: activity. 5:00- 9:00: Work on show. 9:00: GO HOME. That went on for an entire week. During the school year, we have practice from 2:30-4:30 after school every Tuesday and Thursday, weather permitting and even then, we have indoor practice. Fridays are football games and Saturdays are competition and Exhibition. (If anyone in Gwinnett, Georgia is going to exhibition at Brookwood this year, PM me.) It just ended two days ago, and my feet still hurt. I love marching band, but I am SO glad band camp is over. Now, I can sleep in 'til ten tomorrow and not have to worry about being late to band camp.

Dancing Melon: Our SLs are supposed to teach by example as well as word. They need to be able to teach a person who has no clue how to march, and should also be good enough and well behaved to show them how to do it and how they should behave. I like the way my BD does section leaders. Except it is kind of boring listening to him explain this at section leader training. 4 days of it...

Your band camp is really close to ours in terms of dates. Our freshman/pre-camp/percussion/guard band camp started today and goes again tommorrow. Our actual band camp for all members starts wednesday from 8am-9pm, goes until friday, then we have the weekend off before having monday and tuesday starting at 1pm-10p.m. Plus, sophomores have registration on wednesday, juniors on thursday and seniors on friday if I am correct. Freshman have it tommorow I think. Not completely sure, I just know sophomore for a fact. Oh yeah, I've decided not to go to freshy camp. I'm too busy, and if I want to get my hair cut so it should be just long enough to put up for our first game on the 28, I can't go to freshy camp tommorw. Ah well. Edit: I got my hair cut. Why does it seem like the farther, cheaper hair places do it better then the more expensive, closer ones? My hair is just perfect, able to put it up in a high ponytail(with layers) yet it can go down and still be cool(not hot on my neck)

So, tell us about your band camp. It lasts for five days and takes place in the middle of August. We stay at a university campus during this time. We then have day camp as often as possible. Sometimes the BD can't make it, so we are encouraged to practice at home and stay fit. Is it an actual camp or is it just at the field at your school? Both, we have daily practices for a week at the school first. Then, we go to a university for full-day camp that last for 5 days. After that, we have day camp every day that's possible for the band director to attend ^.^

Back from day 2 of bandcamp, with a new, faster internet!(Is listening to our opener on youtube, and it is sending chills down my spine it is so amazing. Not us)
I'm burned everywhere. My feet feel like they will explode. My old friend(a freshman. Held back in elementary because she is special ed) is a terrrible marcher, and it is about 200 degrees outside during morning marching.
Negativity aside, these are the good/not as negative things: -We have 80 people, compared to our 68 last year. Keep in mind about 10 of those 68 last year were seniors(Bad part is: a lot of freshman) -Clarinets are no longer 6 people, 4 eligible. There are now 10 people, with one(the aforementioned old friend) is not a good marcher and 4 returners(including me). We actually have two that are at junior playing level who are freshamn, which is nice. -Our band is already amazing! We are marching and playing already, which last year wasn't accomplished until day 4 of full band camp, an we have our opener learned and we are int he process of learning our closer(music, not drill) -The music is actually not as bad as I thought it would be. I thought I was going to hate it, but up to speed, it is actually quite fun, especially with the whole band. -I now have 2 year-younger friends in band with me, as compared t the I know a few people but aren't good friends with them kind of thing.
I think that is it. It is fun being a returner. I have tips for freshman and get to tell stories from last year. I calmed them down a bit because our band camp is torture at the moment, and I told them that school year rehearsals aren't half as hard. It is true. Despite the sunburn and aching feet, I'm pretty excited.

i went to an actual camp at UC Stanislaus, we got to stay 4 to a dorm in the rooms, it only lasted 6 days and it wasn't marching band, we just played a bunch of music. It was amazing, my first band camp ever! I loved it and would recommend it to anyone and everyone.
