Mari tilter her head as she pondered the strange look she was receiving, wondering if she'd said anything wrong. "Yeah, research," she said, as if it were an entirely normal part of life. "Kit's been working on a paper for her school about the cabbage I came from. It's a lot of work, so I don't know if she would want me gone for too long. She has to be able to know what happens to me, because it's part of her paper."
It seemed like a perfectly plausible statement to Mari, who didn't see why Fish could get so caught up about it. Parents nurtured their children in such a way all the time, right?

"Oh," said Fish, nodding sagely. It was sort of weird, but then all families were sort of weird. "You came out of a cabbage, too?" he asked. Of course, he knew lots of kids at Liberty did, but some didn't.
He leaned in towards her. "Hey," he said, "You've got gills and I've got gills. Maybe we're like third cousins or something."
Well, it was a thought.
"Or not," he added, frowning in disappointment, "because we don't really look alike, do we?"
