I get what you're saying. XD I hadn't thought of it that way, but really an interesting way to look at it. I guess I always kind of assumed that every since Jounouchi had opened up to Yuugi, he kind of just became friendly to everyone (like how he was friendly to Kaiba and asked him to play cards with them until Kaiba acted like an a*****e, and how he seems to act more comfortable than the other characters going to Bakura's apartment in the manga) but if you really think it over, that might just be him putting up a confident face. But then to really admit that you see someone as a good friend, good enough to have a dream where they supported you, that's completely different, and that vulnerability does come into play. I'm now starting to wonder if Jounouchi would've admitted that Bakura and Otogi were in there too, since he's not as close with them.
I think that at the point where Mai got angry at him for what he said, Jounouchi realized that she was having even more difficulties than him in growing close to people, so he decided to set his own fears aside, and instead work his hardest to help Mai and assure her that he cares for her. So it may not be so much that Jounouchi changed his mind about feeling comfortable admitting that he relies on Mai as a friend, but more that he realized that he needed to admit that for her sake, because she relied on him too.

Slowly attacking the character discussion...well...one a day thus far, not so bad.

Basic Opinion/What You Answered in the Poll: Like, Like Chibi K I like him a lot, but he just doesn't hit that love factor for me either.

Rating of Favoriteness: Ok, Seto, Pegasus, Yami no Bakura, Otogi, Yami no Yuugi (not ordering here, I'm listing the characters I like more than Jou so I can figure it out, haha), Ryou, Mai...I think that's it. So 8? Do I feel secure saying 8th? I think I feel pretty comfortable saying 8th.

Why You Hold That Opinion: He's a nice, good, loyal guy. He's a very doting big brother, very protective. He's ambitious and he doesn't quit. He's very honest, and usually pretty aware of himself - his thoughts, feelings, beliefs. He's a bit too volatile for me to love, most of my favorite characters are cold or at least covered. They don't wear their emotions on their sleeves, you can't always know what they are thinking. I admire the ability to be emotionally self-aware, but lack of control and focus are qualities that will get a character bumped from love to like on my list. I wouldn't say I always fan the villain, but I do tend to lean more towards the anti-hero/rival. This is a category Jou doesn't fit into. However, in most series sidekick does trump hero on my list - obviously not in this one, haha (well, he trumps half of the hero if that counts ^_~) - but just clarifying sidekick status isn't something I hold against anyone. In series that lack an antagonist I tend to always cling to the sidekick as a fav - so in a world in which Seto, Yami no Bakura, Pegasus and the like didn't exist Jou would probably be very high on my list.

As for the discussion on Jou as a sibling, I do like many aspects of him in that regards. Being protective - and being strong enough to back it up. He's fun and he's trustworthy. Reasons I shy against it - again only at the ideal, I'd totally not mind having had a Jou for a brother - he's not necessarily the smartest guy. If I were picking qualities in anyone, especially a lover or family member, intelligence would be on that list. Primarily because I love to hash out thoughts and opinions, I adore debate (ok ok, I'll be blunt - I'm argumentative - in good fun of course). Jou is a great guy, but he couldn't beat me in an argument, he couldn't even really challenge me - not to be egotistic here or speak to my credit, verbal debate is just not his strong suit - and I would hold that against him.

Favorite Characters to Pair With: I think my low interest in slashing Jou away is why he's only at the like setting with me. Not sure why, he's got great meat and potential, but chemically it's just not there...^_~.

Characters I'd like him with, even if I don't totally squee over and search for it: Honda, Mai and Otogi. Maybe Ryou, that's probably it.

Characters I don't mind him with, but have no real interest in (save for if it's fab art - fab art is always a win even with pairings I dislike - funny art too, concepts can get brownie points and entice me to make up for the lack of pretty): Yuugi, Yami no Yuugi, Malik, Anzu, Freaky Fish Guy, Seto and Yami no Bakura. And maybe Bandit Keith *cackles*.

One a day seems like a good plan. ^^
Eight's my favorite number, and Jounouchi's my favorite character. =D I think that's a sign that eight is the right number.
I like... totally agree on everything you're saying, your descriptions of Jounouchi. And what's strange is that I feel very similar to you, not generally caring for volatile people, and wanting intelligent friends and partners to discuss and debate with but... I dunno, for some reason, when I encountered Jounouchi, he just threw that all out the window. XD I had always preferred the cold, stoic characters before YUU*GI*OU, but Jounouchi broke that somehow... it's like he just showed so much pure emotion, so much passion, something I had never been able to appreciate in neither characters nor real people, and suddenly I understood how wonderful that can be. I wouldn't call myself an emotional person at all, but I can definitely understand and respect emotional people far more than I could before Jounouchi. And I definitely love a lot more volatile characters since then as well, like Kuwabara from Yuu Yuu Hakusho. <3 So I guess to me, Jounouchi represents the things that I struggled to appreciate, and how I overcame that struggle, and found my own passion for it. I guess part of the reason he's my favorite character from like... anything, is because he has deeper meaning for me than most characters, you know? Like every time I see that shiny gold hair or that stupid grin, I just feel happy. ^^ To a person who generally lives in the shadows and doesn't care much for overly-cheery people, he's my sun that warms my heart and allows me to escape that part of my personality from time to time.

Haha...man I need to go to work - oh well, the endless piles of data will still be there for me to upload, I'll just make this quick.

Well I now feel very safe in saying he's 8th. I actually don't like even numbers (save for 0, and I also don't like 5 - ironically that was my brother's favorite number when he bothered to have such a thing - assuming he no longer bothers here). However I do have a soft spot for 8, because if you rotate it, it becomes infinity, which is very cool.

And yea, I don't like Kuwabara, haha, but that's my evaluation from middle school (which is ohh - 10+ years ago for me now?). I've actually been meaning to read the manga lately (I started it a year or two or go but then got distracted) so we'll see if my mind changes. Although I can't say "since then" about anything YYH, since that was my first anime. So yea maybe age and experience will change my mind.

I totally understand, and he's an excellent choice for favorite character. Who knows, maybe he'll eventually bump up to love status with me - because Jou is one of those characters I tend to like more and more everytime. I mean when I started off I felt mere indifference to him, and now he's in my top 10 (and this isn't a series where 10 is a large option - there are TONS of characters to pick from here).

Yay Freaky Fish Guy!!!

OK, time to run to work!!! AHH!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, yes, eight is infinity tipped over! =D Haha, five was my sister's favorite number as well, so I tend not to like it either. XD I usually do prefer even numbers though.
Yes, you should definitely give YYH a read. :3 I was only into the anime in middle school as well, but I read the whole manga recently, and it added so much more to the series, and I totally changed around my opinions on characters. Kurama was always my favorite, and still is (Shuuichi, not Youko), but where's I used to also hate Kuwabara, he became my second favorite! And I don't care for Hiei anywhere near as much as I used to. Plus I ended up falling in love with Kuwabara/Kurama, even though it hardly has any fans and creeps one of my best friends out. XD
Yay, I hope he does elevate to love status for you eventually then! ^^ But yeah, top ten is really saying something in YUU*GI*OU. o.o
Have fun at work. XP

Kurama was - is? - my favorite as well. Hopefully that won't changed. Followed by Hiei. And I do - did? - also hate Kuwabara, omg I'm so confused. Obviously we started off the same on this series, guess we'll see if we end up the same when I finally have time to read the whole thing.

I WAS LATE TO WORK!!! crying

For some reason it was HELLA parked up today and I had to park an extra block over *sigh*...I'm afraid to park in the parking lot because I don't have a permit, I know I'm allowed but I don't want to have to challenge a ticket if they actually do check *sigh*. Tomorrow is my last day at the HS location for about a month though (I'll be back doing the same boring thing based from the district office this time) so I guess I'll leave earlier tomorrow (no turning the comp on in the morning!! Oh btw, my laptop is named Kaiba - not quite the right character thread but just though of how that's totally YGO related and I should mention it, haha - when I got it there was a competition Kaiba or Kyouya - but obviously favorite CEO won out in the end).

Wow, we did start out the same. XD Somehow I have a feeling though you still won't care for Kuwabara too much afterward though (I think you'll upgrade from hate to sort of like, though I'm probably way off), since he really is quite similar to Jounouchi, except more sexist, less attractive, but way stronger. I do love him so though. <3 Hiei was my second favorite as well, but no longer... I still like him, just not as much as I used to.
Aww, that sucks. XP Silly parking is silly.
And OMG, my laptop is named Kisara! XD I didn't get to pick it out, because it was originally my mom's, then she sold it to me, so I ended up with a blue and silver laptop. Blue is one of my least-favorite colors (though silver's cool), so I was trying to think of a way I could make the color more likable. Then I realized it was the colors of Blue Eyes, so I named it Kisara, and now I don't mind the color so much. XD
PostPosted: Thu Oct 15, 2009 8:20 pm

Yea he's really ugly, haha. I think I did hate him less as the anime progressed but I never got even close to like, but we'll see, I didn't even finish the anime which I hear doesn't exactly end well.

I also dislike blue - inspite of Seto's apparently love for it, haha. Blue and Yellow - which ironically are the colors of most of if not all of the UCs (Universities of California). Silver is indeed awesome. And that's a rather crazy coincidence.

Interestingly enough though, as the manga goes on, Kuwabara does get a bit more attractive, and there are a few pictures of him (like on the pages between chapters) where he looks downright hot. o.o
I didn't finish the anime either, but if it ends like the manga then... well, I wouldn't say it was a bad ending, really. It wasn't an amazing one, but I thought it was pretty good. ^^
I don't like blue or yellow either. XD But that's not as bad as the colors of my high school: They were red, white, and blue wtf patriotic?
PostPosted: Sat Oct 17, 2009 12:09 pm

From what I heard it doesn't end like the manga, first it ends before the manga and I hear it ends incomplete. Like Inuyasha (the end of which I also haven't seen - but that's what I hear). This is why I wanted to read the manga, rather than finish the anime (though I still maybe want to do that some day), for the conclusion.

Kuwabara hot? *cannot imagine*

Haha, go patriots! Haha, well if that was your mascot it would have at least made sense - you weren't the patriots were you? I loved my HS colors - we were red, white and black. Similar to yours, yet infinitely more better... rofl

Wow, that sucks. I had never heard how the anime ended, but the manga alone did kind of fall flat at the end. Like I said, wasn't amazing, but wasn't terrible either.
Kuwabara hot. XD I'm fairly certain there was a better one someone in the manga, but I couldn't find it...
We weren't the patriots... we were the coyotes... ~_~;; Your colors sound hella better.
PostPosted: Mon Oct 19, 2009 6:04 pm

Yea, I had crappy college colors but wicked HS ones - guess it's a balance? Red, white and blue coyotes? Hmm...nope, doesn't make sense. Hahahaha. We were the colts, I'm not a big horse fan, but the colt was white in red and black flames, that was pretty spiff. Fire makes everything better ^_~.

As long as it's at least conclusive, doesn't leave me falling off a cliff, then I'll be able to handle it. I hate incomplete in series that strive so hard to "get somewhere." I mean with Ranma (which I still haven't finished, I'm in the final season of the anime but haven't wanted to end it yet) that'd be fine. Sure they have goals but each episode seems self-contained, it doesn't matter if it doesn't go anywhere. However Inuyasha and YYH are not the same way.

Yea the picture is better than what I remember of him from the anime, but I'm still not swooning here. Hehe, so guess we'll see.

I had good elementary school colors (teal and white) but a crappy mascot (dolphin, even though our school was called Oasis WTF?), crappy colors in high school, but an okay mascot, and good colors in college (maroon and gold), but a crappy mascot (the sun devil; while it sounds cool, the thing is butt ugly in design). So I'm never completely happy. XD But fire does make everything better. I probably could've even appreciated my high school colors if we had a coyote painted to look like the American flag, but it was on fire! =D Oh wait, that might make us terrorists...
Yes, the ending is definitely conclusive. And I totally agree with you on how endings go, like how it wouldn't matter so much with Ramma, but it does with things like Yuu Yuu.
Well, if you started swooning, then I would have to hit you with my feminism stick, so be happy. XD But actually, Kuwabara is even uglier than the anime at the beginning of the manga, but he slowly gets more and more attractive as it goes on.

You don't like dolphins?! *is sad*...that was my Rec swimteam mascot. Although I would say I don't know how much I'd want a sea creature school mascot, but dolphins are one of my favorite sea creatures - after otters and sunfish. And probably jellyfish - which as of this weekend I can now say are not delicious. Well, actually they tasted pretty good, but I just can't get past that texture *shudders*.

Shame the sun devil is ugly, b/c it does sound amazing. HAHA! Patriotic coyote on fire!! That is hilarious, hahaha. Oh man, took a lot not to laugh out loud at that, I'm watching House with my mom that would have been fun to explain.

Haha, oh right...swooning bad. Haha, in my defense I don't think I've ever really swooned in my life. And he's even uglier? *shudders*...yikes! Haha.

Dolphins are okay, but as a mascot for a school in the desert, they're just lame. Plus, we had ugly dolphins with retarded sunglasses. They're not my favorite sea creatures either way though. I'm quite fond of sharks, eels, starfish, and especially octopi. <3 Oh, but here's the ugly sundevil, in case you were curious.
I'm glad I made you almost laugh. XD
But it's only in the really early manga, like before they even meet Yukina.
