Mariel smiled and bounced with excitement, she had finally found a friend who loved water too!! "Yes I Love swimming, thats why mommys here to see if we can get a pool!" Mariel was super excited about the prospect of having a pool and a place to swim whenever she wanted, as it was she only had the small river a mile behind their house but it was such a long walk! And as she grew the river seemed to get smaller and smaller she was sure a pool would solve these problems.
When Bree mentioned the sea mariels eyes lit up, she was sure that Bree meant the beach. Mariel had never been to the beach yet but Luna had described it to her once and promised to take her one day. "You have a lake! Lucky! I've never been to the sea, but mommy says its just water that goes on forever! I have a blue bathing suit! We should make our parents take us together!" mariel was so excited about the prospect of a friend to go to the beach with, Luna had always said it was a great place to build castles and have adventures and that the water held treasures...and...and mariel was bubbliing over with excitement her previous shyness completely melted away by now.

"A pool?" Brianna's jaw dropped. Boy, was she jealous. The lake was okay. As long as you didn't imagine what was in that green, murky water everything was just dandy, and she liked swimming too much to let such a thing as an imagination stop her. "We should!" Now why had they never gone to the sea before? Oh, that's right. Quinton hated wat-
A sudden thought struck her. "Mariel, you can't be a cat!" she exclaimed. "Cats hate water! Unless - what if you're a swimming cat?"
It made perfect sense. Mariel's kind of catlike ears, her tail, her fur, her love of water - all the signs pointed towards "swimming cat". Now they just had to go to the beach. She'd bet anything that you could find swimming cats there, sunning themselves on the sand.

"Yeah Mommy says we have enough room in the back yard and she doesnt like me running out to the river behind the house cause its to small so she wants to see if we can get a real pool" Mariel was happy and proud that her mom was willing to put in a pool, she couldnt wait untill it was built so that she could swim every day and have adventures in it.
Mariel gave the thought of being a swimming cat a good once over...well it would explain her tail and her fur covered body. Because they had already decided she was pretty close to being a cat so maybe if she was a swimming cat that would explain why she didnt have pillows or claws!
"Your right! Maybe since I'm a swimming cat I dont need feet pillows and claws cause I'm in the water!"Mariel smiled, yup it made perfect sense! She was a swiming cat. She glanced over at Luna who was still talking and trading papers with the receptionist, Mariel didnt want to bother her but now that she knew what animal she was she couldnt wait till they got in the car so that she could tell her mommy. But since Luna was not avaliable Mariel decided to keep talking with Brianna, man she was so lucky to have such a smart friend now!
"Do you think there will be swimming cats at the beach? Will they look like me or have colors like your daddy?" Mariel was full of questions! There was no dbout that they would now HAVE to go to the beach and figure out the last pieces of this puzzle and plus if they were at the beach they could swim and do all kinds of fun stuff!!

"If you had pillows on your feet they'd only get soggy." Brianna agreed sagely. Her child's imagination was already running with the idea - or, more accurately, it had hijacked a truck and was roaring down the highway with it. Swimming cats! "They'd probably be all kinds of colors. I seen pictures! There'd be black ones and white ones and spotted ones and stripey ones...and brown ones, like you."
The orca girl got to her feet, still swaying a bit from the fall, but was quickly balanced out by her tail. Quinton had left both the files and his wallet on one of the chairs. She rummaged through the latter, tossing out credit cards, an outdated driver's license, coupons, before coming across what she was looking for.
It was a family photo. Brianna held it out for Mariel's inspection. Not all of her guardian's family was tabby. She plunked a finger on a cousin, who was as plain brown as Mariel. "See? Mariel, we just gotta go to the beach. You could meet other swimming cats!" And of course they could run around in the sand and play in the water and sit under a stripey beach umbrella. There were many benefits to this plan.

Mariel nodded to agree with Brianna and watched as she started to rummage through her daddys stuff. mariel cocked her head to one side wondering what Brianna was looking for untill Brianna came back with a picture. mariel took the picture and couldnt help the huge grin that spread across her face.
"Your right! There are brown cats!" That proved it, mariel was sure beyond a dbout that she was a swimming cat. "Maybe some of the cats in the picture are swimming cats too!" She added as a note of interest. It would be fun to see if any of Bree's family were swimming cats as well. maybe mariel could meet them and they could all swim toogether! Then Brianna mentioned the beach. YES that was a perfect idea.
"Your right, I'm gonna tell mommy that she should take us to the beach so we can find other swimming cats! AND we can see all the colors and swim, because they might be in the water you know so we have to look there."Mariel nodded her head and caught that glint in bree's eye that was now appearing in her own eye. of course they would have to check the water for swimming cats, yiou never know where they would be hiding, and maybe they could make some sand castles to make the cats come over and see, there were all kinds of fun and of course strategic methods tto getting swimming cats near you at the beach.
But mariel remembered something and gave Brianna a cautious look "But isnt your daddy afraid of water? How are we gonna get you to the beach too?!"

Mariel could be right - maybe some of the cats in the picture were swimming cats too! Brianna held out the photo at arm's length and squinted down at it. It was too bad pictures didn't move. Then she could be like, "Show me your feet!" and then they would. At the moment she found it impossible to tell.
She blew a strand of hair out of her face and tossed the picture over one shoulder. "You could tell your mommy right now. She's gotta be almost done, right?" At Mariel's question, she clapped her hands together and gave the other girl a grin. "He's scareda water, but Uncle Oscar isn't! Don't worry, we'll both get there. It's gonna be great!"
How big were swimming cats, anyways? Sandcastle sized? Maybe they'd get to the beach and find all the little cats needed a house, and then they'd have no choice but to stay aaall day making a HUGE sandcastle. Uh oh, but what if they were actually really big? Bree's eyes glazed over briefly at the thought of a cat the size of an orca. Talk about scary.
"How big d'you think they are?" she decided to ask. Maybe Mariel knew somewhere in the deep recesses of her mind.

Mariel nodded and gave a sidelong glance at her mommy who was wearing a rather pleased expression up by the counter. She could ask her mommy right now, especially since Briana was right here and of course with BOTH of them pleading there was no way she could resist! mariel turned to Bree and gave her an encouraging smile when she mentioned an uncle that could take her to the beach! That was PERFECT!! They both had a way to get there AND they could both work together to find the other swimming cats.
Mariel tilted her head a bit at the thought of how big the cats would be. "Wellll...if I'm a swimming cat then they must be about my size, right?" Mariels eyes suddenly brightened as one of the most wonderful thoughts ever came to mind. "What if we find a bunch of swimming cats our age! Then we could play all kinds of games and ask all kinds of questions!" mariel imagined her and Brianna in a tribe of children all playing frisbee, and building sand castles and swimming, it was like a utopia for beach lovers!

Brianna chewed on her bottom lip, secretly worried about the prospect of several more Mariels. What if they were bigger than her? And nasty, not shy and quiet like Mariel?
But then her sense of bravado kicked in to save the day. If they were, then she'd just kick them in their behinds! Or get Uncle Oscar to do it. But if they didn't convince Luna, then they would never know just how big or nasty the fishing cats were. First things first. "Okay, c'mon!" She ran over to the counter, the thudding of her clunky pink shoes bouncing off the walls in the normally quiet reception room.

Mariel followed Brianna quickly and skidded to a stop into her mothers knees. "Mama, mama, we should go to the beach, vamos al playa?" She asked making the cutest face she could possibly manage and swishing her tail back and forth to show her excitement at the prospect.
Luna had just about finished with the receptionist, oh yes they would be getting a pool and a large one at that! Luna was a thinker, ever since that baby sitter had come with a dragon she had been half dreading getting one herself but if she got this custom pool thingy with a cement "island" then at least if they got something for the water (which she assumed they would given mariels aperent affinity to it) it would have a place to live OUTSIDE the house.
Suddenly she felt a thump on the back of her knees and she turned around to see Mariel hugging her and asking to go to the beach. But wait it wasnt just mariel anothe rlittle girl, a cute one with a tail like a little whale. "Ah Chikita, tienes un amiga?!" Luna loved to see Mariel making friends, afterall the girl wasnt exactly anti social she just didnt get out much. Luna looked at the pleading children and then at the plans for the pool. "Well boquis since da backyard is out of de estory untill the trabajo is finish. then I guess I haf to take ju to keep ju happy." Luna smiled but then made a stern face and held up one hand. "But ju can only go on one condition. Ju have to introduce me to jur amiga here." Luna was always slightly nosy so she was curious about the new little girl and plus if she knew the name then later on when Mariel mentioned her she would know who it was.
Mariel nodded as her excitement grew. They were going to the beach!! She absolutely couldnt wait! But she knew she had to introduce Brianna, Luna always liked to meet her friends to set up playdates and stuff like that. And if luna got to be friends with Brianna too then maybe they could do all kinds of things together and go play in the pool when its finished and, do everything together!! Mariel was very excited as she hopped over to Brianna and proclaimed. "This is my new friend Brianna, she's an orca!"

Were they speaking in code, or something? Brianna couldn't quite remember where she'd learned about spies from, but it was probably on Uncle Oscar's old black-and-white television, which seemed to be stuck permanently on the Old and Boring Channel. She did remember that spies used secret codes to talk to each other so nobody knew what they were saying. This did not sit well with her at all.
Brianna was silent as Mariel introduced her to Luna, and only gave a little smile to show she'd heard at all. She was too busy staring at Luna. She didn't look much like a spy. They were supposed to wear suits.
Well, she'd get to the bottom of this. "Mariel," she whispered urgently to her new friend, "why're you talkin like that? Why's she talkin like that? It's weird!"
Meanwhile, Quinton was hanging over a sink in the men's bathroom, feeling distinctly ill and looking distinctly pale under the fur. He'd meant to return ASAP, really he had...until the headache showed up.
'I'll go out in a minute.' he thought, forehead pressed against the blessedly cool porcelain. 'Just a minute.' The very thought of the drive home was making him nauseous.

Mariel giggles when she realized that Briana didnt understand Luna. Of course for her Luna was speaking completely normal but mariel lived with her. "Momma doesnt speak alota English, she speaks Spanish cause shes from...um....." Mariel loked up at Luna for a moment trying to remember exactly which country her new momma came from, her fuzzy tail swishing much slower now as she tried to remember...then suddenly a smile broke out onto her face as she did indeed remember. "Oh ya from Mexico!" Mariel was so proud ofherself for knowing this, but then again she had kind of been forced to learn it since when she moved in with Luna she didnt speak spanish either.
"I had another momma first so thats why I speak fine but now momma Luna is teaching me Spanish and i teach her English...er well at least i make her practise." mariel had been rehomed a few months prior to meeting Brianna because her first mother had been unable to care for her. Being as young as she was she took it in stride, usually choosing to forget there had been anyone other than Luna. Essentially since she had been so young with her other mom most of her memories were with Luna. She hadnt told anyone before about having a previous mommy and so she felt she was duty bound to swear Bree to secrecy. "But you cant tell no one kay? cause Luna is my mommy now."
Luna smiled down at the two little girls, her understanding of english was generally perfect but her spoken english always needed work. It was usually a fun dilema and she inwardly "DAWWWED" at the little Orca girl since she had never come across someone so young who did not speak spanish other than Mariel who now spoke it quite fluently. She let mariel do all the explaining since she would prabably have too heavy of an accent for the little girl anyway, and Mariel seemed to already have taken it as her duty to explain.
Ah the young, always surprising. As Mariel explained Luna looked around the lobby for the orca childs guardian...that was strange...there was no one near by. Now WHO would leave a child this young alone in a secret lab with scary people in lab coats!? Luna inwardly was convinced that D-Corp was some kind of slave trading organization but she would never say anything...she was afraid that if she voiced her fears they would take mariel....

Mariel was speaking English now, but for all the sense she made she could have been saying it in Spanish. Brianna's forehead wrinkled in puzzlement. Her upbringing was woefully incomplete, for all Quinton's hobnobbing with the revolutionary world, and the concept of different languages was a baffling one. "So she's sayin normal stuff...but with different words?" The big question was Why?. Maybe it was like spies - so people couldn't understand what you were saying, or something.
For a moment Bree was very much in awe of Mariel and her mommy. Imagine having to learn two ways of speaking, instead of one! She'd have to ask someone about this later; she didn't want to look too stupid in front of Mariel.
Quinton would never tell Luna this (she was very imposing!), but it wouldn't bother him too much if the lab techs decided to take Brianna back. He had no worries about the exact nature of D-Corp, unlike Luna, since the truth - genetic experiments involving animals, children and dragons - was shifty enough.
Alas, society frowned upon leaving children in public waiting rooms. He splashed one last handful of cold water on his aching head and started towards the door, staggering only slightly.
The secret didn't seem like a big one to her, but it sounded important to Mariel, so Brianna nodded seriously and offered Mariel her pinky finger. "Promise." The pinky promise was a most sacred vow, after all. If you broke it (said Quinton's sister), your hand would fall off.

Mariel was delighted with this pinky gesture of promise, she hadnt seen it before but its meaning was unmistakable! She offered her pinky finger as well and they completed their secret. "Yup yup she is saying the same stuff but it just sounds funny. Cause different langu- lang-...different ways of speaking happen all over the place! You gotsta come watch Indiana jones with me one day they speak all kinds of funny languages!..well the bad guys do!"
Because of Mariels having to learn spanish her natural curiosity always had her out looking for new languages and so in movies she was starting to learn which accents went to what language. It was fun since TV had so many international channels. She was hoping to learn some new languages later on in life so she could ask questions all over the WORLD and not have to worry. Her tail swished around in excitement just thinking about mastering all the languages and learning EVERYTHING!! It almost made her want to explode with excitement, but of course she wasnt even close yet, she only knew 2 languages out of billions she had some work left ahead of her. "I think we gonna have to learn dragon talk later too...cause I met a dragon and it didnt talk like us..." She was talking about when she had been baby sat by Ligeia and Vorrel of course and she remembered how Vorrel spoke funny but Ligeia seemed to understand him. A great idea suddenly popped into her head.
"BREE you could come and I can teach you spanish and we can have a secret language! Just me and you...oh and Luna too." Mariel was excited, no one she knew besideds Luna and Lunas family knew spanish and so her and bree could go to school and speak about anything they wanted without having to be secretive and whispery about anything!
Luna shook her head at the two girls and had to admit that this was greatly amusing. mariel was still a child and so had a limited vocaulary but she seemed to want to teach spanish to Brianna already. Oh man well at least Mariel will have friends. Luna could imagine the girls speaking broken spanish all over the house for days, it was a comical thought and one she half wanted to see. "Chikita if ju want to teach jur amiga I'll 'elp ju."
Luna had decided that there would be less damage done to the language and the meaning of words if she helped, Mariel was notorious in the house for making up meanings when she wasnt exactly sure about things. She gave the two another smile and kept a sharp eye out for Briannas guardian taking on a sort of mother hen persona over both. might as well keep them talking while the other guardian was...busy?

Uh oh. Now she'd done it! Brianna could hardly stand to learn her ABCs, let alone a whole 'nother language. Then again, learning stuff with Mariel and her mom had to be way more fun than doing it with Quinton. Besides, it would be so cool if they had their own secret code. Bree bounced up and down on her toes, starting to get excited about the idea too. "Okay! Let's do it! When can we start?" Her bouncing and babbling inevitably ended with a mouthful of hair - she impatiently brushed her bangs back, but the interruption had slowed her down a little. "What's a 'amiga'? You said that before." She finally settled on a simple question, not aiming it at one of them in particular.
Quinton warily poked his head around the door, gritting his teeth against a hiss of pain. Why did they make it so damn bright in here? He was relieved to see that his charge hadn't disappeared - again, society frowned when such things happened - and was in fact still talking to the other little girl, looking much more animated than usual. Oh, gracious. He hoped she wasn't bugging that fearsome foreign woman...
Just in case, he stealthily made his way to an empty seat, one that was shaded by a potted plant. Blessed darkness.
It wasn't that he meant to be a bad parent, he just hadn't asked for it. The blackmail certaintly didn't sweeten the situation any. And why him? Couldn't they find someone, anyone else? Someone who actually wanted to take care of a kid? What a mess.

Mariel smiled and giggled when Bree got hair all over her face. "Amiga means friend, but the girl kind." Mariel wasnt going to explain about feminine and masculing verbs and nouns because well she really didnt know about them. She was still young enough that she was just puytting words to meanings and not really looking at the gramatical rules yet. "So I'm your Amiga, and your my Amiga!" mariel clarified excitedly. She loved learning and this teaching buisiness wasnt too bad either. "see its not so hard your learning it already. Just takes practice" mariel nodded sagely then ended with a giggle. It had taken her a few weeks to be able to successfully communicate with Luna when she first moved in and so she knew the value of practice. But of course it was so fun for the curious to figure out everything on their own so she imagined that everyone would be as delighted to learn a new language as she was when she had to learn spanish.
As for the continuation of the lessons... mariel looked up at Luna. "Mami cuando puede visitar Bree?" She was asking when Bree could visit and implying with her suddenly large eyes that she hoped it would be soon. This teaching stuff was FUN. Plus the dogs at home only understood spanish commands so Mariel thought it would be fun to teach Bree how to boss the dogs around in spanish.
Luna smiled at Mariel and shrugged her shoulders, once again trying to speak english to not leave Bree out of the conversation even if she had a heavy accent. "I Dono chikita, eet depend on her parientes. Ju 'ave to ask deem." Luna was not about to pretend she could just whick the little orca girl away though it was a funny thought. Whick the child away and leave a not for the parent, of course the girl would be safe but then again she thought about someone doing that to her and how she would beat their face in...so she deicded against it. She was however still curious about who exactly WAS the parent of the orca girl and so having the children ask him/her was the best chance she had of seeing why exactly they would not bee with their child. Though she did have to admit Bree seemed to be as much of a handfull of energy as mariel was and so she had some automatic sympathy for whoever was her guardian.
