Sri bowed his head and nodded. "Ah, I see," he squeaked softly. "I am sorry for your loss." As he said it, he tried to recall if he had ever met Mistress Ching's mate. So far as he knew, he hadn't; she had been the most prominent of the Pacific pirates since she had taken the position, and that was well far back to his own early days of piracy.

It made him think; was there ever anyone he had felt so deeply about? Felt the need to avenge with the full force of his might? No. There's never been anyone to catch my eye. No one to work myself over. It was depressing--love was a great experience, one that could breathe a sense of contentment into a hectic world.

Away from anyone he'd fought alongside everyday, away from anyone he'd ruled, away from almost everyone he knew, Sri was starting to think that maybe...Maybe it's time I slowed down and let people in. "I was...thinking, Mistress Ching," he said slowly. "That I think I might like to move into this area. Unless you would rather I did not."

Shih nodded slowly, accepting of his condolences. She did her best not to speak of Yi. When she had led her fellows in their quest for revenge, she had done her best not to show any emotion besides anger at the fool who'd dare kill the great Ching Yi. Though she had been the brains behind the operation and held the Pacific Lord title, she had trusted her mate in times of battle. He would be the one to leader their pirates into a fight when necessary.
As pirate lord and a female in a patriarchal world, she could never show feminine weakness. Even when she had been carrying her son, she went on raids.

"I have no words against the idea, as long as your territory takes none of mine," she replied with a narrow-eyed smile. Ally or no, Shih did not like sharing her territory, and the other pirates learned that lesson quick. When in the heat of a skirmish, Shih and Sao Feng's forces had been the most brutal against the enemy. Few wanted to tangle twice with the oriental otters.

"Thank you," Sri squeaked gratefully. "I appreciate it. And do not worry--I would not dare attempt taking any of your territory." He smiled crookedly. "I tried it once when I had just been named Pirate Lord, I think. I have not tried it since." The battle, he remembered, had been swift and humiliating. Since then, he had learned two things. One: Do not go into battle without planning first. Two: Do not pick a fight with so serious a pirate lord as that of the Pacific.

Since then, he had also learned to be a fearsome force in his own right. Not to pirates--some of them tried, but many of them failed to take his waters--but to the merchants who tried to take them. With the East India Company gone, though, life had been starting to get dull. Fewer fights, less treasure to be gained. I am almost glad now to be here. At least I'll have someone to talk to.

Sri gave Ching one last nod and stood up. Hepet stood up with him, nodding cautiously to Hsu.
