Tala Mingan

There are only two things that matter in this world...

Tala looked up at the oddly dressed elf. She had to repress a chuckle at his odd and conspicuous demeanor. Instead she smiled warmly. "Good morning Mr.Thesslongarde. Yes, my name is Tala Mingan." Tala rose and extended her a hand in greeting. " Won't you please sit down? My friend should be by here any minute to deliver my breakfast. I'm sure he'd be delighted to make something for you too." She indicated the seat across from her and sat back down.

Usually she used a cold and businesslike manner when dealing with her clients, but Aerido was obviously nervous and unsure of what to do in this situation. Tala would assume that this was the first time he'd ever hired a P.I. Because of that, Tala wanted to make sure that he felt comfortable, not only because comfortable clients are easier to get the nessesary information from, but also because Aerido didn't exactly seem like a threat at the moment.

At Tala's warm, welcoming demeanor, Aerido was relieved, and he visibly relaxed. "I realize I may stand out... but I must hide my appearance. I don't know what circles run here, and it is of utmost importance that my family not know about this. It is better to appear odd than to be recognized."

With this excuse mumbled, although articulately, Aerido shook hands and sat. His expression saddened considerably, almost instantly, however. "I'd be delighted to have something," he then responded after a pause, to the suggestion of breakfast.

((Ha... I'm stuck in 'old times' here. Cloaks, cobblestone streets... I'll just say a certain upper-class section of the city reveres old-fashioned ways, I guess. If that's all right. xD ))

Tala inwardly marveled at Aerido's response to her unasked question. Perhaps, he was not as naive as his appearance suggested. "I understand your concern Mr. Thessliongarde, but I assure you that you are among friend's here. You are not the first client I've met who would rather their family not be notified."

Before she could continue Oberon walked up with a steaming plate of breakfast food and a cup of coffee. Tala hadn't ordered the coffee, but they knew each other to know that coffee was always implied. "Here you are, breakfast special d'jour. Let me know what you think of it ok?" Oberon turned his attention to the elf sitting across from Tala, assumed that she was a client and knew that he shouldn't ask his usual question of "What brings you in today?". "What can I get for you?" he asked warmly, putting a memo pad and pencil out of a pocket on his apron.

Aerido leaned backward. "I'm... sorry...?" he said quietly, in a clearly masculine voice. With a sidelong glance at Tala, the elf asked for a simple breakfast, assuring that anything would be fine.

Taking assurance from Tala further, Aerido removed the hood of his cloak, revealing bright, golden hair. This was signature of the Thessliongarde House. Now, the collar of a modern T-shirt could be seen, barely showing above the hem of the old-fashioned garment worn over it.

Oberon nodded and walked away to get started on the order.

Tala chuckled lightly. "There's nothing to apologize for. I just didn't want you to feel more uncomfortable than necessary." She took a sip of her coffee. "So," she continued, "to business. What is it that you need my services for Mr. Thessliongarde?" Tala was pleased that Aerido was visibly relaxing, this would make her job much easier. A happy, relaxed client is more likely to cooperate well.

"Right," Aerido nodded. "First, I believe it is customary for me to say, please call me Aerido if you wish." The elf leaned onto the booth table, as he saw other customers doing, with his elbows. Looking down at his fingers, Aerido breathed in deeply, before sighing. A moment of silence passed. The elf replayed the scene over in his mind. He had not been there, but vivid descriptions had been provided by the authorities.

A young elf with golden blond locks is found strewn across the ground, in an alley in the Old District. Preliminary inspection reveals that she has suffered many wounds, none fatal but many painful. Her loose clothing is ripping in several places, including across the torso, by an upward slash--most likely claws. She has seemingly been thrown against the alley wall several times--her blood is found all over. But she herself has been completely drained of blood.

Forensic analysis reveals that she has been fed upon by a vampire. A massive concussion was suffered, after a small amount of resistance to assault. There is no evidence of rape. A small portion of her golden hair has been removed--likely to be kept, as a souvenir, by the murderer. Her clothes are completely in shambles, and it cannot be determined whether any portions of clothing have been taken, as well.

Aerido jerked his gaze up. "S-sorry," he apologized, unsure of how long he had been lost in his own thoughts. Breathing deeply again--to calm himself now--Aerido related his situation to Tala.

"My sister is dead," he began. "They've proved that her assailant... was a vampire. I've brought a copy of the forensic report... as well as a photograph of Feore. I've reason to believe that authorities never will find this vampire. I do want him found, and brought to justice... one way, or another."

The implications of what Aerido said were blatantly apparent.

((OH! sorry, I pulled the passage from one I'd written in the last life of this thread. The client had been an elf then too, but was a girl. I totally thought I'd edited it better than that. Wow, I feel stupid.

EDIT: I took it out. Hopefully that'll fix it.))

Tala listened with rapt attention as Aerido told his story. She had waited patently through the long lapse in his re-telling, knowing that the only reasons for it would either be intense guilt, or loss over what would follow it. Sure enough, Aerido had good reason to take such an emotional investment in the case.

Tala ad to consciously keep herself relaxed as she processed the implications of Aerido's final comment. She had killed before, so that was not what bothered her. She was unsettled by the request simply because of who it was from. No wonder Aerido didn't want his family to be involved.

Tala however did feel a certain amount of empathy with him and his late sister. She'd had her share of loss in her life, being the friend of someone in her position had it's risks. Because of this, she was inclined to take him up in his offer.

"Mr. Thess- I mean, Aerido," She started, her face a stone of businesslike seriousness, "I will take your case. And I will do my best to bring this murderer of yours to justice." Tala lowered her voice to a low growling whisper, leaning forward so that Aerido alone could hear her, "I would suggest however that you be more careful about how you phrase your requests."

Tala was not agitated by the notion that the vampire might very well die once caught, that was simply a hazard of the job and she had no worry of being convicted for murder in that case. What worried her was if someone over heard Aerido's careless remark and asserted that it was pre-meditated. Tala's neck would be on the line then and she did not take well to being thrust into positions like that.

Aerido slowly blinked, calmly meeting Tala's gaze as she leaned in. At her words, he nodded, showing that he had understood. The elf then resisted the urge to look around. "Payment," he said, this time in an equally low tone, "is an amount you are free to set. I came for the best--money is not an issue in this matter."

After having said this, the elf leaned fully back, and closed his eyes as he took in a deep breath. Releasing it, Aerido silently thanked whatever gods there may be for his fortune in finding someone like Tala. Then, he returned his focus to her.

Now, Aerido's mind wandered ahead somewhat. He had not thought about what Tala might wish to ask him--merely finding her, or anybody who would take his case, was of primary concern. Now that it was settled, the elf began to plan ahead. He remained attentive to whatever Tala would say next, however.

Aminta Kennocha

Living life…

User Image Aminta stood back with a long breath of pleasure. It had taken her the better part of the morning, but the piece was beginning to take shape. The metal was well-smoothed in the places that she needed clean and planed, and she was already beginning to feel the ominous whispers of what it would become. This probably wouldn't take her more than a week or two, if she continued at her current pace. But for now, she thought sadly as she began to put her tools away, she had to let the metal cool and relax. There would be no more work on this today.

She happened to glance at the clock, and a cry of surprise escaped her. It couldn't already be that late! Hurriedly, she turned off the stereo that had been blasting classical - almost as good as rock music at that level - and raced across to the sink to clean up briefly. That minor task accomplished, she hurried out the door, turning back quickly to lock it. If there was one thing she couldn't afford, it was having a customer wander up to the third floor of their narrow tailoring store and seeing work in progress. Then she would have to kill them, and that would be bad for the store's reputation.

Pulling back her curly hair into a semi-tamed, somewhat professional-looking ponytail, she stopped at the top of the stairs that led down to the store and took a deep breath. There was no reason to run down the stairs. She had to look professional and calm. Oh, gods, how on earth had she lost track of time like this?

Making herself walk slowly and calmly downstairs, she nodded to her mother - already behind the counter - and even managed to smile at a few early patrons before going into the back. It was time to get on the mess that she had left behind last night. If she was quick, she thought, she might even have get home tonight, and maybe start on another idea she'd had sometime this evening. But for that one, she would need a model. She resolved, in a corner of her mind, to keep an eye out, and then turned her attention back to what her family would consider her real work.

through nightmares and dreamscapes.

~Evelyn Marie Exudes~

"To teach is to learn twice."
-Joseph Joubert

Evelyn pushed foreward through the streets of Haven with a pace not unlike a mad womans. She really did need to get to the book store before heading off to breakfast, as the book she was waiting for was currently in the process of being with-held for her, but also the store clerk wouldn't keep it for long. She brushed a stray strand of brown hair from her face, the greyish silver streak down the side of her part brushed against her hand as she tucked the stray strands behind her ears, pointed as they were, and she continued on down the side walk.

The bookstore came into veiw and she crossed the street carefully, watching out for anything that might come her way, and ran the length of the crossed white stripes. She was breathing heavily when she got there, and opened the door to a rather cheery hello. It reminded her that she had more to do, and hurried to the counter to make and collect her purchase. As soon as she had done that, she would head off to the sewing shop she had sent her jacket to.

Tala nodded in return, glad that Aerido had understood her. The effort entailed in explaining further was not something she had time nor patience for. The soreness from her healing muscles was acting up again, putting a slightly sour damper on her mood. She was determined however to not let it effect her interaction with her client, nor her analysis of any information he might give.

"We'll settle on payment later. Right now I need to know everything you can tell me about the murder, if your sister had any enemies, anything the police have managed to find, and anything else that you think might be useful." She rattled off this list in a practiced manner, picking up her cup of coffee. She took a sip to sooth her nerves and body. The hot liquid radiated warmth through her, placating her tired body. "I'd also like to see the forensic report and photograph." She continued, "I'll warn you now that some of the questions I ask may be unpleasant for you, but I need honest answers if I'm going to have any success in finding your sister's murderer."

Tala felt a particular obligation to do well on this case considering the obvious trust and confidence Aerido had placed in her. The flattery of his statements had not escaped her.
