Ashokan Farewell Toco, do you or do you not play the oboe? i do not play oboe, but that doesn't mean what i say is invalid. especially because i'm not saying "do this to be good at oboe" or "no, that's not how to play oboe". i'm saying "this applies to everything, not one specific thing"

HOTTEST ONE IN THE WORLD i think it is hard i tried to play the first ten times i almost fainted I tried to play, and the first ten times, I was not bad at all. mrgreen I like sax more, but oboe is a pretty cool instrument, too. I wouldn't mind purchasing one just to learn it better than I already do. As for the original topic, I think that the oboe is quite a difficult instrument for a young musician (young = 3 years of experience or less.) For anyone playing ANY instrument for 4 or more years, it shouldn't be too hard to learn. whee Reeds... Yes, medium soft is an easy reed switch from the clarinet to the oboe. It's good to start on soft to get a good embouchure going, then switch to medium. And... I have no idea how to make them. Ask people in the double reed sticky. 3nodding

I never was told that you're supposed to breathe out along with breathing in, so...yeah, I almost passed out so many times in band. xd Gooood tiiiiimes...eventually I found out that you're supposed to exhale about as often as you inhale to get rid of the air that's already in your mouth, because you feel the need to breathe before you're out of air, or something like that. I suppose I would've found that out if I took private lessons...so take private lessons if you have the money, which I don't.

proud band geek i posted this in the musicians forum but people in this guild would probably be more reliable i play clarinet and want to try the oboe but people say its hard because its a double reed instrument is it really that hard and how do u make the reeds? what size reeds are best? Please help! exclaim Well..I've played oboe for 2 years..and its not easy I must say. Clarinet and oboe have some similar fingerings after you go across the break on clarinet (I play clarinet, too [ smile Now, the reed making deal...You really need to be a pro at oboe to make reeds, one of my friends didn't learn until 5 years of playing. So don't expect to make them anytime soon. If you're a beginner, you should start on a soft/medium soft. I started on a medium soft, so either one will do. Soft is just a little easier. Right now I play on a Medium/Medium Hard. Hard reeds are from the devil. eek hope i helped! biggrin
