Yanagi nodded. He could hear another stream nearby, and thought he'd do some fishing. He thought that, the first time, she might handle fishing better than if he were to hunt for red meat. He didn't want to scare off one of the first Kirin he'd met that was willing to at least try to deal with his dietary habits.
"You munch on berries. I see if I can get fish. Ok?" he asked hesitantly. "I go downstream more if you want. Or fish there." he pointed with his muzzle at a bit of the stream visible past some of the berry bushes.

"Anywhere that's good, as long as you don't go hungry," came the reply.
Fish wasn't so bad... they were cold, scaly creatures which didn't really have a death cry, and she'd seen lots of other animals eat them.
Maybe this wouldn't be as trying as she thought. Silarial's face broke into a weak smile as she realised that any berry juice dripping down her chin probably looked like blood, while Yanagi's hunt probably wouldn't leave him with any such look at all.

"Ok." he moved over to the stream and nodded in satisfaction. He would fish here. It would serve a double purpose. It looked like a good spot for catching fish, and he could test her reaction. If she was going to freak out when he actually ate meat, better to find out now before he got his hopes too high. It would hurt, but not as much as it would later.
He waded out to the middle of the stream, slow and steady so as not to frighten his prey away. He stood with head lowered until his horn almost touched the water. Eyes intent on the water in front of him, he did not move a muscle. A few minutes passed before he saw a flicker of movement in the water. His movement was a blur as he ducked his head so that his horn came up under the fish. With a flick of his head, the fish was up in the air, where he caught it in his jaws.

It was over so quickly, Silarial was glad she hadn't blinked. One minute, the fish was in the water; the next, it was in the air and then in Nagi's jaws.
The mare swallowed down the last mouthful of berries and went over to the stream - she needed to wash her mouth, anyway.
"Much as I hate to admit it: That was amazing." She felt a little sorry for the fish, which flopped helplessly in the willow stallion's mouth... but she had never seen another Kirin hunt like that. "How did you learn to do that - by watching the birds?"

Nagi bit down sharply, breaking the fish's spine and killing it instantly. He set it down on the bank to free his mouth for speech.
"Watching birds, other hunters. They use paws, but I have no paws. Tried hoof first, but too wide. Slows down when hits water, looses power. Tried grabbing with mouth, still too slow. Horn faster, not so slowed by water, but hard to aim. Took very long time, still miss often." he explained, admitting how unreliable a form of hunting it really was.

Silarial winced when the fish died... but supposed there were slower methods of killing, and this one was probably the most merciful. Besides, if Nagi didn't eat, he'd die too.
"So I guess fish isn't exactly one of your favourite things to... hunt?" She asked delicately, stepped towards the water to drink and wash her muzzle of berry juice. She hoped he wouldn't delve too far into details. While still very much unsettled by the idea of hunting, something told this mare that her current male companion was a keeper - and she wanted to be sure that she was prepared for any more future hunting sessions.

He shrugged, the motion causing ripples all along his back. "Hard to hunt, small amount of meat, but tastes good. Best for when I am not too hungry though." Luckily, he had eaten well yesterday, so he really wasn't that hungry, and the fish was big enough to hold him over until this evening.
Nagi could see that the mare was working hard to understand, and hopefully accept, his eating habits, and it caused an odd feeling inside of him. He had met a few before who could accept him, and had even heard of others like him, but never had he met one who, like most Kirin seemed to be, was repulsed by his diet, but actually worked to overcome that bias.

((Thanks for the lollipop. ;o It's actually permanently on my wishlist along with HoG. I's hoarding.
We should wrap this up so Chione and Digi can get acquainted with Nagi. Sil's been hogging him too long. xD This will be my last post!))
"In that case, you should hunt more of them," she suggested, lifting her head from the water. "I don't want you to starve, meat-eater or no."
She looked up and down the river, considering.
"Let's head downstream after you've finished this one... I think the river flows slower there. It should be easier for you to hunt when the fish don't rush past."

((Cool. I had... 3? I mostly just hoard pets. And ink, but that's because I want the body dyes. Sounds good! Depending on what's happening with the Rainbow Herd, Chione may not be joining us for a bit, I'll have to ask, but it sounds like Digi's all set to go.)) Nagi grinned at Silarial, more than a little goofily. "Perfect." he said, though whether he meant the plan or her, even he was not sure.
He leaned over, daintily eating the meat off the fish while careful not to get any of the bones. He was soon done, and went to the stream to wash off any stray bits that might have stuck to his face. Once he was sure he was clean, he turned back to Silarial. "Shall we?" he asked, with a nod downstream. It might be an odd relationship that was forming, but at least they would never have to compete for food!~ Finis! ~
