"Balint." Kindle grinned softly at Jiyuu's startled yelp. "Come now, it can't hurt that badly?" She ran a few broad strokes of her tongue over Balint's back and wings, then nosed him toward his newly hatched sister, already readying herself for the inevitable sting.

Balint looked up at Embri, suffering his mother for the time being. He could place bits of all of these sounds - they were so similar to those he'd heard before - but they were still different somehow. Issuing a disgruntled sound as he was gently nudged toward the chocolate filly, his ears slicked back.

"There..." Shifting to her knees, then her side, Kindle laid down near the pair, allowing them access. Balint, at least, seemed to get the idea quickly enough. Flinching, the mare looked off. "First time's always the worst."

Chococo looked back up at Embri curiously as she spoke. Even though she didn't understand a word of it, she was under the distinct impression that the cream mare was amused over something. When her mother laid down beside them, the filly followed her brother's cue and shuffled in for her first feeding.

"No, mainly just surprised me is all," Jiyuu replied with a small laugh, lightly rubbing his nose with a foreleg. Turning back to Embri with a slight smirk, he said, "I have no issues at all with giving up that 'title' as you put it. That just means I'm the oldest son now."

"Technically you already were," Toshiro replied with a smile, shaking his head a bit. Watching the two foals feed for a moment, the stallion lowered his head and affectionately nuzzled his mate. "Chococo and Balint. Our family just keeps growing, hm?"

Kindle closed her eyes and lifted her head as Toshiro nuzzled her, relishing the touch as she returned the gesture. "So it does. You know-... when they grow teeth, I'll probably start questioning my sanity again." She looked at the pair, the candied and the chocolate. "So colorful..."

Embri nodded, another fine pair of foals. She didn't much care what they looked like so long as they were healthy and whole. Folding her wings back into place with the customary side to side shuffle, the young mare took a few steps aside to contemplate and give the once-again parents some room. From past experience she knew they'd be occupied with the important business of nursing for a fair bit of time.

Turning her eyes towards the sea, she sighed softly. Why does it make me ... not uncomfortable... not unwelcome, because I've never felt thus with Kindle and Toshiro, but... extraneous? restless? For a moment the mare reconsidered her opinion on raising a family. Just as quickly the old fears returned, wrapping cold fingers around her mind. She shook her head adamantly. No. Not for me. I can't explain it, but it just isn't my path to walk. Maybe that's the problem. I don't seem to have a purpose. Chione is off with her new herd. Embri snorted softly at that, Probably already doing their best to outdo Kindle and Toshiro in offspring. Jiyuu will inherit his father's territory and herd, or find a mate of his own. What am I supposed to be?

She flicked an ear absently, swatting at a circling insect. The sea simply lapped against the sand, whatever answers it might have, it wasn't sharing.

(So... Shall we skip some time and have the foals a bit older? lol.)

Chococo didn't drink for very long before pausing to investigate the small colt beside her, finding him to be much more intriguing. Curious of him, she nipped lightly at the ear closest to her and gave it a small tug, just because.

Toshiro had to admit, he wasn't the least bit jealous of his wife's situation. The mares seemed to have quite the raw end of the deal actually. So, to make up for it, he was always sure to be extra caring and attentive during these times. "Perhaps at that time they can be persuaded to drink more coconut milk," he said with a soft chuckle. "Just to take the pressure off of yourself."

While his parents kept each other company, Jiyuu stepped up beside Embri, a look of concern on his face. "Is something the matter?" he asked quietly. It wasn't entirely unusual for his foster sister to become lost in thought from time to time, but that didn't keep the stallion from worrying nonetheless. "You look a bit... preoccupied."

Embri started and shook her head ruefully. "Just daydreaming, Jiy." With an irritated snort the mare swatted the insect buzzing about her ears. She favored her brother with a half hearted smile. Bet your future doesn't bother you one bit, sibling-mine. You've enough confidence for two Kirin. Just like Lachtna.... The mare sighed at the thought. "I wonder if he's still out there, somewhere. Has he forgotten all about me already?" Embri shifted on her hooves, a cold knot settling itself in her stomach.

(( I think we're getting there XD ))

Balint bleated softly in surprise at his sister, her attention drawing his from his meal. He stared at her in shock and awe, then worked his jaw a few times as though testing it. He leaned over and snapped at her ear.

The mare tilted her head slightly. "Hmm, if they'll take it, it would be a blessing. And a relief." Not long and this would be over. "And look, they've already started the gnashing of teeth." Spoken utterly flatly. It had taken the other two a good month to get that far along.

Chococo's wings flapped a bit on her back as she attempted to pull her ear out of her brother's grasp. After succeeding in this task she settled down again and curled up next to the small colt, suddenly realizing how tired she was from the effort of breaking the egg. With a tiny yawn, she laid her head down next to him and settled in for a nap.

Toshiro had to chuckle a little as he watched their youngest children interact. "So it would seem." They were definitely quite different from their older siblings, that much was already evident.

Even though Embri had not expressly said the stallion's name, Jiyuu knew who she was talking about. "I don't know," he said quietly. "I doubt he's forgotten about you though. You leave quite the impression on others." He smiled meekly at her, attempting to cheer her up somewhat. "I'm sure that you'll meet again someday, if it's meant to be."

Success! Kind of. The little brown one had stopped. Balint uttered what could only be a pitiful little attempt at a growl, but when she didn't rise to meet him, he merely sighed and curled up beside her.

Kindle rolled her eyes, her gaze turning to their eldest son and their adopted daughter. Tilting her head, she pricked her ears curiously. Was everything alright? Embri looked upset, but she didn't want to intrude.

Embri nudged Jiyuu's shoulder with her nose, turning back towards the nest and the three resting Kirin laying within. Seeing Kindle's look of concern, the cream coated mare shakes her head slightly. "Just wondering... what happened to Lachtna. Nothing important."

She walked over to nuzzle the two small foals, sniffing the baby-hatching scent still clinging to their fur. Her expression was passive but the young mare's eyes looked troubled still.

(( And so, the day and the months passed, and the rains came to stir the lands of Aerithe, and... /ok ))

User ImagePushing himself up on spindly legs, Balint glanced around the little den. His sister was dozing as far as he could see, along with his mother. Always slept so late. He could just make out their forms in the dim morning light. He crept to the front of the den and scanned the dunes. No sign of their father. But where had Embri gotten to? Narrowing his eyes, he tried to pick her out but quickly gave up. His mom had sprawled again, muttering softly in her sleep. Even Chococo was half buried under a big wing. It'd be impossible to find the cream colored mare in that nest of girl. The little colt didn't want to expose himself to girl-bugs any more than distinctly necessary. His father was already doomed, he was sure. Poor Toshiro. Hanging his head for a brief moment, he sniffled. He would miss him when the cooties finally ate his spine.

His mother always explained to him that his dad would be fine, but he knew better...

Pushing the little ache away, Balint turned his attention back to the present, back to what really mattered. The tide pools.

Jiyuu stood just outside of their shelter, keeping watch while his father was out on patrol. Now that the winged stallion had grown, the two of them often switched shifts throughout the night to keep the family safe. With dawn already breaking however, he saw no reason to attempt any further sleep and simply stayed up.

Some movement from inside caught his attention, and he turned to see that Balint had gotten up. "Hey there, little bro," he said quietly with a soft smile. "What are you doing up? It is still early yet."

--------------------------

Chococo stirred the slightest bit beneath her mother's wing, but did not wake. At the moment she was having a rather pleasant dream about butterflies and flowers that she wasn't inclined to wake up from anytime soon. Not of her own volition anyway.

"Shhhh," Balint scolded quietly. His ears flattened as he glanced around. "Where's daddy?" He had to be lurking somewhere, he always was. Just out of sight, just within range of hearing. And the little colt would be satisfied. He just had to see. Stamping a little hoof, he looked at his brother expectently. He refused to answer until the threat of patriarchal intervention had been nullified.

"He's off running the morning patrol," he answered back quietly. Jiyuu quirked a brow suspiciously at his little brother. "Why? What mischief are you plotting, dear brother of mine?" Honestly, this colt seemed to have more trouble in him than Jiyuu and Chione combined had made. And that was saying something. While Chococo, on the contrast, was entirely the opposite.

"Well," Balint hesitated, uncertain. He glanced around a moment, as though he didn't quite believe that their father wouldn't come in on his explanation. "I wanted to go to the tide pools. To see the little animals in there while they still move around. They don't always move around so much in the daytime."
