Lily was a bit confused at the pause in the middle of Reuben's sentence, but he didn't question it. "Yea! Even if we don't have wives." Lily's face almost flushed a white. The voices of his family echoed in his mind. The nagging voice of his mother telling him to get married to a nice woman and his step-father's voice telling him to just find true love and whoever he chose was okay. "If you do, that's okay too! She can help us as well?" He said quickly in case he was making a mistake and that Reuben really DID have a wife.
"Yes they are." Stas began speaking, but was cut off by the lady. He quickly put his hands over his mouth as he turned over to the lady who began speaking to the kids. At the sound of 'macaroni necklaces, his ears perked up and he wanted to get started right away. "Can I share your table with you?" Stas asked Vergil with his gray eyes glistening with anticipation at the yellow feathered boy.
"It seems like macaroni necklaces are for today." Lily said with a smile as he looked at Stas and Vergil. Stas who seemed just a tad too enthusiastic about it. It was only stringing uncooked macaroni onto a string right? Lily thought about whether or not he was like this when he was a small child such as Stas and Vergil were now...

Reuben rolled his eyes and put his hands over Vergil's ears. "Wives are highly overrated anyway." He laughed, a trace of bitterness flittering across his features. "And no, from that statement, you can probably infer that I'm unwed."
Vergil frowned at his Dad, wanting to know what he'd missed, but unable to remain unhappy for long with his friend around. "Yeah!" He chirped enthusiastically. "I sit at the red table with Mark and Jill! They're nice and good at playing kitchen," he added, wanting to make his table sound as attractive to Stas as possible.
"Seems like it," Reuben commented, back to his jovial self. "How about if we find you guys your seats, huh?" Vergil had already shown him his seat (and the floor by his seat and a few decorations on the walls he found appealing), so Reuben know where to locate it. He found another chair for Stas from a stack by the wall and brought that over.
"Alright, looks like you two are good to go."
Mrs. Pemberley looked like she was about to start explaining the procedure, and Becky were just beginning to pour out the noodles, putting a small amount on four paper plates, one for each table (there were red, yellow, green, and blue). A pile of strings also sat by her at the instructor's table. Reuben guessed that she was going to give directions first and then pass out supplies. Probably a good move.

"ah..." Lily said with a sort of sad smile. He wanted a companion in his life, and Stas answered his calls but... in another way. It wasn't as though it was bad or anything. "We'll ride the same boat then." He said as melancholy filled his voice a bit. He tried to cover it up and change the subject as Stas and Vergil seemed to have disappeared from beside him.
Stas smiled brightly as the table, as Vergil was trying to make it, was very appealing. "They sounds very nice!" Stas said happily to Vergil. Stas watched as Reuben made his way around the room to get a chair. "Thank you." He said with a thankful smile on his face. He would have never known where to get a chair for himself because he was new to the place.
Lily gave a smile towards Reuben. "thanks Reuben. And Stas. Make sure you behave yourself." He told the little boy. He was replied to with a nod and a trusting smile. Stas looked over to the other lady who poured out pasta into plates. His excitement built up inside of him as he saw that the lady was almost going to begin speaking again. He watched closely as his tail swished a little bit behind him.

Reuben had quite frankly had enough of female companions for a while. Not that he didn't enjoy the company, but, hell, breaking up with Charlotte had been rough and he didn't want to go through that again for a while. "Guess we will," he said. "But, hey, good things come to those who wait, right?"
Yeah, so they weren't on speaking terms this week. Still didn't give him any reason to rain on Lily's parade. The kid deserved a chance to find someone who was right for him. "I'm sure that something will happen." He said with a wink.
"You're welcome, Stas," Reuben replied, smiling. He looked up at Lily. "He's so polite."
Vergil's eyes went wide, as though he'd just seen the coolest thing on earth. "You have a tail..." He said reverently. "That's so neat!" Mark and Jill hadn't yet taken their seats, but he was sure that they would find Stas as awesome as he did.
"Alright, shall we stay for instructions and then make our way out?" Reuben suggested. That was probably just long enough to get the kids distracted with their craft, so they wouldn't have to watch their parents leaving.

"I guess." Lily said with a weak smile. But at the wink, Lily couldn't help but laugh from the heart. "Yea. We're still young, right?" He tried to look up instead of down on the situation. Reuben's bubbly personality (in Lily's eyes) was keeping him sane under the parent-pressure. It was sort of good to have someone with him through the baby blues.
Stas smiled sweetly towards Reuben and continued to sit with Vergil. "He's had lots of practice with my friends. They'd normally take care of him whenever they were free and went over. They're really good people despite the fact that they always pick on Stas and tell him things he's not supposed to know about." He said as his voice turned into a sour tone.
"Mhm. You didn't notice?" Stas said questionably. Most people would have seemed to overlook a tail on the small boy. It just looked like his regular hair from the front. but you know, it was more swishy than the hair on his head. "I don't see your friends Jill and Mark." Stas said as he looked on the opposite side of the red table.
"That sounds like a good idea." No tears and everyone wins, more or less. He watched as the young purple headed boy looked as though he was actually having fun for the little bit of his life. It made Lily feel warm and fuzzy inside when he saw the boy's face.

"Oh yeah," Reuben agreed. "I think we've probably got a lot more ahead of us than we think." He knew that there was more in store for him as far as Charlotte was concerned. Oh, did he ever. But seeing Lily happy made him glad. Going through parenting all by one's self could be a drag. It was going to be good to have a friend to swap stories with.
Laughing, Reuben looked at the purple haired boy and then back at Lily. "Sounds like some interesting friends. The only person Verge has really gotten to know apart from Stas and people at school is this eldery lady at my building who's a bit strange." Mrs. Hamilton was more congenial than cogent at times, but she had enjoyed babysitting Vergil while Reuben had found a good daycare.
Vergil shook his head swiftly from side to side. "No, I didn't!" He exclaimed, as though almost shocked at his own lack of perception. Looking up, he waved to a boy in plaid overalls and a girl with a cat on her shirt. "Hey, Mark! Hey, Jill!" He called, a little louder than he should have. "My friend Staaaaas is here!"
The two children looked up immediately and began coming over to the table. Becky came back and reminded Vergil to use his indoor voice and Reuben apologized. Vergil pouted for a moment, wanting to express his excitement, but then Mrs. Pemberley began.
"Alright, everyone! We're going to start our first project of the day--macaroni necklaces. First, we need a piece of string. Becky will be around to each of your tables to pass out the string."

"That's okay though. Friends at school sounds nice." Lily said. "But that old lady. As long as she's not sketchy." He added after thinking about it for a little bit. He felt... lucky that Stas found a friend other than Lily's friends. He couldn't hang out with them forever, you know. They'd grow out of taking care of him and then eventually break his heart whether it's little or not.
Stas' ears drooped a bit as Vergil talked loudly and got scolded for it. He'd have to remember that so he won't get scolded and can remind Vergil so he won't either. He just smiled and waved to the boy n overalls and the girl with the cat on her shirt. He stayed silent though as Mrs. Pemberley began to speak again about the macaroni necklaces.
String. Stas looked over at the lady who was passing them out. She would get to them eventually. He eagerly at the two ladies who worked there and then back to his dad. He motioned his dad over with both hands making grabby movements. Lily sighed and said "Please give me a moment. Sorry." towards Reuben and kneeled down towards Stas.
"Dad, you have to watch me, okay? But you can't see what I'm making for you until I'm done. Okay?" He talked with a soft voice to his dad. Lily, without a clue on what Stas just told him, just nodded and smiled. "Okay. I promise." He said. Little did Stas know, he and Vergil's dad, Reuben, were going to be departing the moment they get distracted...

Reuben gave that a bit of thought. "Nah, she's mostly harmless. She's like a grandmother, I guess." he tried to picture Mrs. Hamilton baking cookies, but couldn't. She'd probably burn herself in the oven.
Mark bounded up and sat quickly in his hair, eyes fixed on Mrs. Pemberley. Jill pulled out her chair daintily and gave Stas a shy wave before turning to face their teacher as well. Soon enough, a piece of string dangled in front of Vergil. Clamping both hands together like an alligator's mouth, he captured it successfully. His string was red. He smiled. He liked red.
Reuben nodded, and watched Vergil with a sigh. Heck, his kid was already so absorbed in the activity that he probably wouldn't have noticed if he was there or not. In a way, it was nice that Vergil had gotten used to preschool so quickly, but it was also a little sad. Reuben was used to coming home to an empty house each day, and Vergil had changed that, had made him someone important, someone who would be missed. He half-wished that he could be the one down there, reassuring his kid before departing. He exhaled. Oh well. Kids change, and maybe Vergil was just going into an independent stage. Man, that went fast...
Mrs. Pemberley's voice floated in and interrupted his reverie. "Now, we're going to knot one end of the string. If you can knot string, go ahead. If you need help, raise your hand and we'll come around."
Vergil mushed his string together in his cupped hands, then slowly opened them to see if the string had somehow knotted itself. Reuben suppressed a snort and went over to help. His dad had mentioned some old pre-k-age how-to videos he'd found at a yard sale...maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to take him up on that offer.

Lily chuckled at Reuben's words. "That sounds like quite a nice woman then." He could still remember his own grandparents when he was little. He liked them a lot even though they were old and sort of boring. He had grown up by himself and always trying his best. He wanted to change it for Stas. Except, he still wanted him to try his best in all that he did, even if he gave up once or twice in a while.
"Vergil looks so cute, I wish i could take a picture." Lily said with a chuckle. "I sort of feel bad for thinking that his difficulties is cute." Lily looked over at Stas to see how he was doing with the string. Knots weren't easy things for little kids like these. "I wonder if Stas will have the same problems." He said as he looked over to his own child and watched what he was going to do.
Stas watched as Vergil got a string and looked up to the woman handing them out. Sure enough, he received one too. The colour didn't really matter to him, as long as it was pretty and fit for his dad. Stas, wanting to be independent like Vergil too, tried to tie the knot himself before making it more of a loop and not a knot. He tried many times before he gave up being independent. "Vergil, I can't do it." He said to his friend as he held the string in his right hand. He pouted a little bit at his defeat as he shyly raised a hand and waited for someone to come help him out of his problem.

"She helped me out a bit before when Verge had just hatched and I needed a sitter. It was definitely an experience." Reuben hadn't exactly been the calmest when he'd found out that his songbird had hatched. To be perfectly honest, he'd just about had a heart-attack.
Reuben shook his head, unable to conceal his grin. "Gotta admit, the kid's a creative problem-solver. I like kids and their goofiness," he said, almost to himself. "It makes my job so much more fun."
Vergil looked over at Stas' string. "Here! Let me help!" He pleaded, eager to try out his technique again. He was sure that it would work this time.
Becky and Mrs. Pemberley were making their rounds of the tables as fast as they could, but quite a number of the kids were having difficulties. Reuben wondered if he should intervene, but didn't want to step on any toes. He didn't mind fixing his own kid's string; it was about as natural as tucking in a tag or smoothing down a cowlick at this point. But he wanted to give his companion the opportunity to step in if he wanted to. Besides, Becky looked like she'd be over soon at any rate.

Lily nodded. It would've been good to have some emotional support when Stas hatched. He had felt so alone when all his friends were gone for the week and no one was there to understand him. For the first few days, Lily didn't even know what to do. He thought about abandoning the boy at one point, but then thankfully his friends showed up and urged him to keep the boy...
"Vergil seems like that type." He said with a smile as he watched Vergil try to help Stas as well. "I don't really know about Stas' problem-solving skills. But he's really gullible." He said with a chuckle. "And yea. It sort of does. Keeps you on your toes." He added at the end as he held back laughter softly to not disrupt anything.
Stas put his hand down and looked over to Vergil who wanted to help. "O-okay." Stas said as he let Vergil at his string. "But don't break it." Stas pleaded gently as he noticed that Vergil seemed to be doing it differently than how the teacher and assistant had done it. Lily just watched. He wanted to help, really. But it was just more fun to watch the two try to figure things out by themselves or at least ask Mrs. Pemberley or Becky. Plus, Reuben didn't interfere, so why should Lily, right?

Vergil grinned, nodding vigorously to show his agreement. "I'll be extra careful not to break it," he said solemnly."I promise I'll be gentle." And with that, he daintily and slowly began to squish the string up.
Reuben looked askance, watching his kid slowly mash and unmash the string. He caught Becky's uncertain glance and gave her a small nod so that she'd come over. Hell, Verge had about a one in a million chance of actually getting that method to work. He shook his head. "Maybe he gets himself a little too involved in the creative part and not enough in the practical. I know he's still a kid, but I want to make sure everything comes out right for the little guy." He laughed. "Guess a good place to start will be teaching Vergil how to tie knots."
Becky smiled at the two parents (Reuben noticed her smile lingered longer when directed at Lily and was perhaps a little more, er, older, than the smile she gave Stas and Vergil. Well, that was new.) and bent down next to the boys.
"Can I help you two out?" She said sweetly.
Vergil sighed, shoulders slumped. He frowned and made a noise that sounded like a humph! Eventually, he looked up and admitted his difficulty. "I can't make it work." He conceded glumly. "Is it okay if Becky ties it instead of me, Staaaaz?" He was a little dejected that he couldn't do something to help his friend. He really wanted to make Stas' first day here extra special, and he had a feeling that that wasn't happening...

Lily just watched as the two tried their best with Vergil's technique of mashing string together and hoping that it would work. "We could teach our kids how to tie knots together. and they can be knot-tying geniuses like a bear scout" Lily said as he remembered the days of summer camp where they showed the campers how to tie a few different types of knots.
"But that's okay. Practical can always be learned with his cooperation, no?" Lily suggested. "I'm sure he'd be able to handle it. He looks like a tough child that won't give in." His tone of voice tried to reassure the other parent that it wasn't all work in life and that you had to let go once in a while and let them discover it on their own. Lily noticed the lady who Mrs Pemberley had introduced as Becky approach the children. He felt half relieved that the two wouldn't be stranded to tie knots for themselves or not even have a single knot in their string.
"Okay. I trust you." He said as his heart let go of the short connection to the safety of the string. When he saw that Vergil's technique didn't work, Stas didn't know what to do. but when the lady came over and Vergil asked him if she could do it, He nodded with a soft giggle. "It's okay if Becky does it. It'll still be really really really awesome!" He said with a large smile on his face. He tried not to make Vergil feel bad, but he wasn't in a position to laugh at Vergil's inability to make mashing string work because he didn't know how to tie a knot either. "Thank you, Becky." He said with a smile to the lady who came to help them fix their strings.

Reuben laughed. "Hey, good plan! I know a few different kinds of knots, and if we completely fail, maybe we can find a scout troop or something in the area." Being a boy scout was pretty useful. Reuben had had to quit just before he became an eagle scout, but he had learned how to scramble eggs and use a pocketknife from his times camping.
"Yeah," Reuben said. "He can be his own person and do things his own way. He seems to like that." Vergil, or so he noticed, seemed to march to the beat of his own drummer, and preferred to make things work his way rather than learn a new way. "Hey, who knows, maybe he'll perfect a new type of knot."
Becky laughed. "Aww, well thanks! I don't think I've seen you here before. Are you Vergil's friend?" She asked, as her fingers quickly knotted the string at one end.
Vergil nodded, head bobbing up and down quickly. "Yup! This is Staaaz. He's really fun." He said knowledgeably.
Smiling at Stas, Becky handed him back his newly knotted string. "Pleased to meet you, Stas! We're almost ready to start, so I've got to go help Mrs. Pemberley now. Bye!"

"We can hunt them down. Hopefully they'd be eager to help." Lily said as he watched the kids with his dark brown eyes glistening with happiness. "mhm. He'd be a good boy scout if he could perfect that new method of knotting he has there." Lily said playfully, referring to the mashing of string in the minute or so before help came and rescued them.
Stas watched as she knotted it swiftly with her fingers. He wanted to do that too. He'd have to ask his dad to teach him the magic behind knot tying. "uh huh. I am Vergil's friend." He said after Vergil had introduced him to Becky instead. "Oh, okay." He said absent mindedly as the string was handed back to him with a knot at one end of it.
"Vergil, Vergil!" Stas said as he quickly turned to his friend. He controlled his volume to no louder than a whisper. "I want to know how to tie 'nots' " He said in eagerness. It surprised him at how the string could stay in place instead of come all undone like when Vergil tried to do it. He inspected it closely while he waited for the next set of instructions from the teacher and her assistant.
