"But is everyone capable of killing...?" she spoke to herself, wondering if Daemon's point could be the truth. Maybe she'd only kill for the most important reasons.

Staring Daemon in the eyes, Mariette gave a cute smile, showing her tiny white teeth. "For my first order, please just call me Mari. Lady makes me feel like I'm hundreds of years old." She giggled. Maybe she was hundreds of years old in her story? It was possible since books could contain whatever the writer could imagine. She didn't seem that old, but she'd learn more about her past once her memories came back to her.

"Do you need help to remember your past...?" she offered, figuring the least she could do was help him. She was a queen of course, and if that was in any way connected to his past, she'd be the one to help.

He blinked, then gave a slow smile in return, his golden eyes finally showing glints of warmth and humor rather than that raging cold they usually held. "Yes Mari." he told her, giving a rather elegant bow. "That's what I'll call you then." It was an easy enough request, after all, one he could fulfill easily, and it cost him little. It bent that strange thing that he remembered - Protocol - but that was alright. He didn't think Protocol had much to do with how people interacted with each other here, in this place.

"And... I don't if I need help. I get flashes a lot." he told her softly, expression suddenly haunted. "I... think it might be better if I forgot most of it. But I do know that I'm supposed to serve a Queen, and that's important. I'm a... a..." It was there, on the tip of his tongue, but he couldn't find the right words. "I can't remember, but whatever I am, we need to serve and protect. That's the only thing I really need to remember."

Then he grinned at her again, and lifted his hand to gently poke her nose. "So I'm glad that I found you, even if it wasn't under the best of circumstances. It means I have a purpose now. Where do you live, Mari?"

Squeezing her eyes shut by reflex as he poked her in the nose, Mari wrinkled her forehead and smiled.

"If what makes you go crazy is your past memories, then I hope that you never have to remember any of that. I like you the way you are right now." she nodded, looking up at him wearily to prepare herself for another poke.

"Well, I stay here often when Kuni's away, but I usually stay with her. She lives out in the countryside. Maybe you should come over and visit sometime." Mari was more of a city girl, but she enjoyed the beautiful countrylife. There were so many interesting things to see, smell, feel, hear, and taste.

"How about you? Where do you live?"

"We live in the city." he told her, looking vaguely disappointed that they wouldn't be able to see each other as often as he'd hoped. Now that he'd found a Queen to serve, he wasn't about to give her up easily. "But Cerri, in the mornings, goes to this thing called 'College'. Maybe sometimes I could... come here instead of going to that awful place she makes me stay at." There were so many other children there, most of them a lot younger. They were always screaming and yelling, trying to get him to play... he hated it.

"I would like to come visit you though." he told her with a decisive nod. "I have to make sure it's safe for you. And I have to check out this... Kuni person." he added with narrowed eyes. Jealousy flared as he thought of someone else living with his Queen, being close to her when he couldn't, but he pushed it down, not quite sure where the emotion was coming from.
After all, it wasn't like he could take care of her. He was still only a child himself, and he knew nothing about this world.

"You can come visit me too, after we find a new house. We're looking now. Cerri says the one she has is too small. I do hate sleeping on that pullout couch thing. It's lumpy. And all the cats take up too much room. There isn't enough left for the dog."

"Sure! I'd come over every day if I could. And Kuni's a nice person, a little bit weird, but nothing too psychotic." Mari reassured him.

"Why don't you go to the library more? I'm here most every day. It can get pretty lonely sometimes..."

"Maybe you could sleep over at my house some time. When you come over we can take a walk through the forests and maybe we'll come upon some monsters." she winked, being pretty sure that there was no such thing. At least, she hoped there was no such thing. She had seen some abnormally large dogs before, but nothing too out of the ordinary.

"...But I have a queen size bed, which is pretty large for me, so I'm sure we'd both fit." she said, returning to the sleep-over idea.

"Monsters?" he asked arching a brow, amusement showing in his eyes again. "If we did, La- Mari, I'd rip them apart." he assured her in a silky croon, then chuckled. "Maybe I will come more often. I usually... don't like to leave the house." he admitted reluctantly. "Too many people. They all seem to want to touch. I don't like being touched."

As for the sleep over idea, something in him whispered that boys and girls didn't normally have that sort of thing together, but he brushed it away. Why shouldn't they? He and Mari seemed well on their way to becoming friends, and he did want to see her house, meet her guardian. A sleepover sounded fun. He smiled at her and nodded, truly enthusiastic for the first time since they'd met, actually looking like a child. "I'd like that a lot, Mari. I'd bring snacks." he offered. "I like these things called potato chips. They're very good."

He hesitated, then tipped his head to the side. "Once we have a house where I'm not sleeping on the pullout couch, you can sleepover too. You can meet all the animals, and we'll have the best pizza in town. I don't know why it's called that, I haven't had every pizza around, but I guess this stuff is really good."

"Potato... chips? Like fish and chips? I know what potatoes are..." Mari thought about it for a moment. There were many things she had seen recently that she had never heard of before.

"Kuni doesn't really like pizza, I heard her talk about it. I haven't even gotten to try it yet. She's really into 'instant coffee' though. My thing is sweets. I like almost anything with sugar." she smiled again, imagining all kinds of sweets.

"I hope that we can become good friends. I've only been here a few days, but I get so lonely just sitting alone in the library."
