RAS-Anjilyn Passion_Dragon [In my opinion, Spanish and American English slang can't compare because the latter isn't really a "language."
Slang to me is funny (sure, I suppose it can be sexy too, though). But I am guilty of making fun of it. I mean, c'mon...people make a living mocking slang: I remember seeing a stand-up routine based entirely on making fun of Ebonics and slang; the comic would say what the audience thought were regular words from the dictionary, but they were misspelled and turned out to be horrible examples of slang. xd I wish I could think of some good examples, but my memory fails me right now. xp ] Everything get's made fun of. It just irked me when this girl (Caucausian) tried to use it as proof that "all blacks were racist and seperate themselves from intelligent people with slang." That went too far. [Whoa. evil Yea, that's just a little outlandish. stare ]

Passion_Dragon bump_whitey2 you have to be able to talk to any body anywhere. so slang is good but you have to know when to use it [I don't like slang, (unless I'm trying to be funny), but I do agree. You should know how to talk to get your point across no matter who you're talking to. 3nodding ] I agree, too! When I'm with my friends, sometimes I say some slang words. But when I'm at home, I use little or no slang, because I don't speak english much at home. Unless I'm talking to my dad. 3nodding

Most and likely they grew up talking slang and is apart of them and who they are and you shouldn't expect people to change who they are just cause it annoys you.

[Having an accent and talking slang aren't the same thing. xd Accents are all about how one perceives someone else's speech pattern in the same language: to Americans, British people have accents, to British people, Americans have accents; but it's still English either way.
But even though a British person may have an accent to me, it would still grate on my nerves if they used British slang all the time. surprised
It's not too much for me to ask for someone to speak in a way that can be understood by the general public. It's not just because "it annoys me" when people use slang all the time. I'm a teacher-to-be. I will not encourage slang in class or use it myself (unless I'm trying to be funny). My job is to set a good example afterall.]

Revolutionary01 I was talking about "It's not too much for me to ask for someone to speak in a way that can be understood by the general public" [-sigh-] [And just why is that too much to ask for? neutral *places elbow on desk and props up chin on palm of hand, eyebrows raised in an almost uninterested expression*
I might assume you would reply with something along the lines of, "Because you shouldn't ask people to change the way they are; it's not their fault they grew up talking in slang all the time." biggrin
To which my response would be: "Sure, bad habits die hard, but you can't use that old 'but it's what I'm used to' excuse all the time in the real world. Tell that s**t to a teacher and you'll might fail the class. Tell that s**t to an employer and you might not get the job.
"'But you can't expect me to change...!' Bullshit! Of course I can. I want my students/employees to be able to communicate to the general public in a way most people will understand. It's foolish of you to think that just because you grew up speaking one way, I can't expect you, a fellow human being, to adapt to a new situation or conform to standards.
"I'm not saying you can't ever speak in slang; I can't control how you speak to your friends or family, but when at school/on the job, I can expect you to speak properly, or YOU can expect to get bad marks/get fired."
Do you understand what I'm saying?? This is real life. My job, for example, requires me and all employees to speak proper English while talking to consumers. Talking in slang all the time at work would cost us our jobs. It's not too much for my employer to ask for us to speak proper English, regardless of how we grew up talking, or how we talk around our friends or family.
That's not wrong. That's life.]

Yeah, I talk with correct grammer as well most of the time. But alot of times when i get angry, i say ******** or something alot and people call me "ignorant" for not articulating myself in an other way then ********. then i just say" ******** you" - jk, but seriously it gets me angry because if someone is pissing someone else off, and expects the person thats angry to be civilized about it, is very annoying.

[Personally, I DO expect people to be civilized about their anger, at least while I'm at work trying to help them solve problems they brought upon themselves. rolleyes But if I'm pissing on you and trying to tell you it's raining, and you go start throwing the f-bomb ( lol ) at me, that would be understandable, because if someone is upsetting you to that level, then it's no longer a civilized argument anyway. xp ]
