Raenef blinked rapidly for a moment then cocked his head adorably as he tried to remember exactly when he had left. “I…guess I jumped to conclusions?”

”I do believe you did, Lord Raenef,” Eclipse agreed, glad that his master was finally showing the intelligence Eclipse knew was buried somewhere in that thick skull. Well, the intelligence that he knew Raenef had recently acquired. “I appreciate your concern for me, but in the future, I would proper that you remain here. In the castle. Where you can do no harm.”

”But I thought I was supposed to terrorize,” Raenef jumped to remind his tutor, proud that he had remembered something from his lessons.

”Did you terrorize anyone?” Eclipse asked, already knowing the answer. There were few things that Raenef did truly well and without prompting. Terrorizing and behaving as a proper demon were not among them.

”Er…” Raenef ducked his head once again, confirming Eclipse’s suspicions.

Eclipse considered lecturing his master some more, but sighed, knowing it would be a pointless endeavor. Instead he placed his hoof lightly on Raenef’s hair. “Please have more patience in the future,” he requested. This, too, was a pointless endeavor, but one that made him feel minorly better. “I do not wish to think of what I would do if anything were to happen to you, Lord Raenef.”

”But you wouldn’t ever let anything happen to me, Eclipse,” Raenef reminded his servant and friend, trust shining in his blue eyes.

Eclipse wished he could have the same faith that his lord did. However, he knew enough of the world, and had lost enough lords, to know that he could not be everywhere all the time. There may come a day when Raenef’s life is put in danger and Eclipse would not be there to protect him. The only thing Eclipse could think to do was prepare his master as best as possible… something that was made harder by Raenef’s kind nature and short attention span.

”Oh!” Raenef perked, suddenly, as though cued by Eclipse’s thoughts. “Did you see Erutis and Chris in your travels?”

”Yes,” Eclipse chuckled, remembering the frustrated swordmaster and smug demon lord that he had visited with. His trip to Chris had been far briefer, as he was not technically allowed on holy ground.

”How are they doing?” Raenef asked, practically bouncing with excitement. He couldn’t wait to hear news of his friends.

Eclipse watched the young lord, a seed of guilt borrowing inside him. Was he keeping the boy too isolated in this dark castle? Raenef wasn’t like others of his kind. He wasn’t sinister, nor did he like solitude. He was a kind hearted, innocent, social creature. At first, Eclipse had been concerned about allowing a demon hunting swordmaster and priest in training to stay in the castle so close to his lord but… Well, Raenef had charmed both of them, and seemed happier for their company… Maybe he could hint that they come back for a visit.

”Ah, yes,” Eclipse murmured, snapping out of his musings. “Apologizes, Lord Raenef. I was… thinking. They’re doing well, and they each had letters for you. Eurtis has adjusted to her new band of mercenaries, and is making good use of them. She still claims that she will leave them once she is certain they will not cause too much harm.”
