It is neither sex, nor mail, nor paper. I'm sure someone will get it eventually though. You'll face-palm if i tell you what it is, because it will seem so obvious afterward.

Hm. I do not want to be someone who does multiple wrong guesses. So I will only make one more guess....
Weather?

the lumber reference calls back to the old pioneer days when a river's primary purpose was to traverse trees and logs to sawmills. You got to think outside the box more next time. lol.

It Has A Great Appetite And Feasts Mainly On Lumber
It implied the it currently feasted mainly upon lumber, it didn't say it used to, but even back then rivers are constantly wearing away stone, so it isn't just feasting on lumber back then either. But again, the way it was worded implied it still feasts mainly on lumber. It wasn't a matter of thinking outside the box. And... the river isn't feasting on lumber if it's the sawmills that are eating it up. So there. razz

lol, don't be a sore loser TT. the 3rd stanza can be interpreted either way because various sticks and branches can be seen floating down rivers on a daily basis, so technically it garners merit whether it be in the past tense or present tense. I win. ^___^
