Veyes grinned just a little as he looked at Hanya, "Well, you know...there's some girls you remember...and others that don't catch your eyes." Hanya always had a way of catching his eye just well...he just couldn't figure out the right way to approach that thought yet. He learned a bit more every time they conversed...that little habit of chewing on her lip. It was rather...cute. But it would be way too awkward to tell her that. Instead, he'd just nodded and and stuck to the conversation....keeping his eyes on her face.

"I agree. It isn't our place to interpret her punishment. But...I wonder if this has ever happened before." He pondered that thought because he hadn't ever heard of anything like this before. "I don't think I'd let her stand, but...I don't know. Is it possible that touching them that soft that she might have increased her chance to impress to one? I mean who knows how much the touching actually affects the dragons selections." His brow furrowed because that thought did annoy him some. Although with his past record, he tried not to complain but then again, he had to move on from that. This person might have killed the little dragons within due to her stupidity. Overall, he felt sorry for her because he knew exactly what the Weyr would put her through; probably worse than what he experienced. However, he felt worse for the eggs because she might have harmed them deeply.

"Yeah. That's important...keeping everyone safe. Mmm...if they won't let us do a touching and the eggs live to hatch, we all best spread out far as possible from each other, Hanya. Leave plenty of room so if a dragonet charges you can side step. Kind of like dealing with herdbeasts and be defensive. Definitely don't want to bunch up because then you can't maneuver." At least, he knew his own skills on the farm were going to come in handy here. He really didn't want to see anyone mauled especially his friends. Although someone got mauled at the last hatching, he didn't remember it from being far too sick. Actually, he didn't remember much of the last hatching come to think of it.

"She doesn't deserve to Impress a dragon she might have deformed or killed," Rinfala hissed. Her body was tense, and she only realized she was clenching her fists when her knees started hurting from the pressure. Could these people not see the danger Kyllae had posed to these eggs? Were they completely--wait, she could answer that. They probably were insane, yes. Or idiots. The dragons were their best sharding defense against Thread! How could anyone ignore that, or a threat to that?

"If one of those dragonets is harmed, she'll find much more to deal with than us."

Veyes tensed up as Rinfala hissed. People were getting really worked up over this and knowing that all they could do is blow off steam as candidates it was even more frustrating. It probably was a good thing in some ways to get it off the chest but as Veyes knew from experience it didn't help to add fuel to the fire. So he had to pull out stuff he had learned and approach the anger from a more rational tone.

"Maybe she doesn't but... we don't decide who the dragons choose and well, they don't look at people's sins or crimes like we do. They're innocent and if one of them says that this Kyllae is their rider, neither I or anyone else is going to deny the dragon. Worse to let the little one go between. You can teach a human not to be stupid. You can't get back a hatchling from between." That part worried him the most...while he didn't want anyone who did such a thing on the sands, he couldn't tell the hatchlings not to pick her. It was a catch 22 situation...someone was going to lose and all he could hope for was that the dragons would make smarter choices.

Rinfala, quite simply, looked at Veyes as though he were stark raving mad.

"Do you really think Cheoth will allow that?" she asked, her voice deceptively soft. "You know what they say, that any dragon has to listen to a gold's command. Do you really, truly think Favan will allow her, and therefore these dragonets, to forget this?" Leaning back, she shook her head. "Sure, she could Impress. But you'd have the sense of a firelizard to bet on it."

"I never said let her Stand," Hanya said, defensive in response to Rinfala's anger. Of course she cared about the eggs. That was the point she was trying to make. They should be worried about the eggs and Cheoth and this Hatching right now, not Kyllae. Doubtless there were plenty of people in positions of power worrying about Kyllae. "Favan is furious, Cheoth is half mad, the eggs are...hopefully alive, and the Touching is nonexistent. No doubt Kyllae will be far away from the Sands when eggs break, and if she's not, she'll probably die." She shrugged.

"I wasn't raised to decide for myself who's worthy of anything." Not that it stopped her from doing it on a much smaller, more harmless scale. But this was too much for her. Hanya wasn't particularly bright, but she knew enough. "That will be for the dragons and Weyrleaders, and not Candidates, to decide."

For his part, Mal stayed out of the argument. It was pretty obvious that everyone already had their minds made up about Kyllae, one way or another. What was the point of trying to convince anyone of anything? “I remember hearing about a clutch a long time ago,” he said vaguely. “A queen was angry over something that some fool Candidate had done. She tried to interfere with her dragonets’ Impressions. I don’t know how angry Cheoth is right now… but I do know that she managed to scare Aeron.”

And that was worth noting. Aeron was not, in many ways, the brightest creature on the face of Pern. He was quite happy to go up and try biting dragons. If he was scared, it was time to lay low and hope that no one noticed you. “Personally, I think Kyllae will just leave. Probably ought to just leave. Things aren’t going to get any better for her here. This is far worse than just a pair of wine-skins.” He nodded towards Veyes on that account, knowing that the other boy would get the reference.

Veyes just blinked...heck he didn't know if Favan or Cheoth would let the girl stand but he wasn't sure that Cheoth would have much of a choice if a hatchling decided on the girl. It was one of those strange matters of dragons that were complex and frustrating. Why did some candidates impress while others didn't? Even if the whole Weyr thought someone was a bad choice, the dragons really didn't care what anyone thought. "Well, I'm not jumping up and down saying to let the girl stand but....We don't know when a dragonet decides on a candidate so it's hard to say what a Gold can or cannot do in regards to her hatchlings' impressings."

He glanced over at Mal and nodded, "Yeah, you're probably right. It's going to be really rough on her." Veyes caught the reference with complete understanding of it. People had been pretty awful to him and the others from the lake over the wine skins incident and the latrines. So he could only imagine how people were going to feel if there wasn't a touching which was meant to help against possible mauling. If someone got hurt at the hatching, this girl would be to blame. If an egg failed to hatch...then Kyllae would be doomed. It probably was safer for her to leave and find a new life.

However, he didn't really think that candidates should intact their own street justice on the matter and just leave it to the leadership. But the Candidate Master seemed to encourage it last time, and that made him rather sick to his stomach. It didn't set a good precedence for the future.

"Maybe it would be best to just wait and see what's announced about all this rather than make any more speculations." he said to Mal as he leaned up against the wall.

Hmph. They thought she'd undermine the Weyrleaders' authority? "I'm not that stupid," Rinfala stated bluntly. "The Weyrleaders will make their decision, and that'll be that unless she manages to get onto the stands and Impress." It was what it was, in her mind. She had her ideas of what should happen, but she wasn't the one calling the shots. No rule against putting forth her opinion, though. "We'll see at the Hatching."

Hanya nodded to Rinfala's comment and smiled slightly. That was exactly what she was trying to say.

"Unfortunately, it'll be up to the dragons to decide, but I certainly hope if any of them are hurt, they're aware of who is responsible for that and don't Impress to someone who's a danger to eggs," she said. Then she shrugged, most of her drive to impress Veyes already gone out of her. His earlier comments to her had elicited a smile, but then he had made some comments that Hanya didn't agree with, and she wasn't above totally abandoning a boy if he said something she thought was stupid. There wasn't much else for her to say, but she still felt required to add something.

"It's going to be a trying Hatching for everyone," she came out with eventually. "But at least this should make other people think before they do stupid things."

Firyal found it interesting that Mal didn't seem particularly rancorous toward Kyllae. He had been one of the people to be disciplined for the stolen wine at the impromptu gathering on the beach a few Hatchings ago, and he would certainly understand the ostracism and unpleasantries that would go on for a Candidate in Kyllae's position as well as she or Veyes. Perhaps it was their experience with being social pariahs that brought the three of them the slightly milder reactions. Not that Firyal wasn't concerned that a dragon meant for her had been hurt or killed, but she couldn't help thinking how destructive and tough the dragonets were immediately after hatching, and that there was a chance no harm had been done. Idiotic, she knew, but the thought of an entire clutch being damaged was too horrible to envision.

"What happened with that queen? Was she able to exert any influence over her offspring's choices?" she asked Mal. She read more than some, but she didn't know everything. She would like to hear that nothing bad had come of it.

"And," she added, directing this comment to Hanya, "I've found people will do stupid things no matter how many warnings they receive or examples they see. But we can always hope."

"That's true," Hanya answered Firyal. "But hoping isn't expecting, and we obviously can't expect anything any more."

But she was tired of dealing with this. "If you'll excuse me," she said suddenly. "I have other things to do. Nice talking with you."

Not really, but time to escape before things got uglier.
