When her sister had yanked on Ali's feathers, Ali tried to surge forward, desperate to get away. The effort when the bloodied feathers came loose launched her forward to tumble through the grass. Thunder rumbled overhead as a storm Ali and probably Neva as well had been too occupied to notice made good on its promise. Increasingly terrified, Ali got to her feet, long legs bruised and skinned from the fall on the hard ground, and continue to run as the first rain drops pelted her starry body. Her wing hurt like fire, but there was no time to stop and cry. She had to get away, before this evil mare did worse.

Neva watched the foal run as the thunder rumbled overhead. As the wind blew, she watched as it picked up the torn feathers and took them far away. The young filly was running away from her but she herself went no further. Her warning would be clear to that skydancer family. They would know who did that to their precious daughter, and why. Especially once the little one described her attacker. She could almost see the horror on the filly's mother's face, and it brought a malicious smile to her face. She turned and walked in the opposite direction the filly was running, looking forward to the chaos she would cause.

Ali didn't stop running. She tripped in the increasingly muddy ground several more times before reaching the trees. By then, the rain had turned into a downpour as thunder rumbled. She was getting cold, and the cold, the damp, and the earth from her falls were seeping into her injured wing. She was totally exhausted, but she wouldn't be safe until she got home. Shivering and wobbling, she slowly made her way through the trees in the rain, occasionally stumbling over a tree root, listening for the sounds of the evil mare. By the time it had occurred to her that she was alone, she was too tired, cold, wet, and hurt to care anymore as she trudged home to where her parents awaited her.
