"One-eighth of a Mark, is it? Well, well, how could I possibly ignore such temptation for a price like that?..."

Like so many among the collecting crowd, Chavel had found his way into the hubbub just by whisper and happenstance-- but unlike so many there, he'd made a point of hedging his bets first. He'd sat back, watched, and listened for a good while now, and was finally feeling confident in his inclinations. The only step left? Why, to sign up officially, of course!

"I'm never one to pass on a thrilling opportunity," he mused out loud, stepping up with a great smile to steal away a betting sheet. "You're quite a generous pair, you know," he told both Mal and Rinfala outright, much like a big brother (as if they'd even SEEN him before!) cheerfully praising their younger siblings. "... Hmm, hmm... yes, this will do... There!"

Given how swiftly he'd scribbled down his guesses (which he already knew just had to be correct), one could only pray that his handwriting was semi-legible. If it wasn't... well, hopefully Rinfala wouldn't have too much grief.

"Pavo will be just thrilled to have some company in the office..."

Even Canthry, meanwhile, had ultimately been curious enough to see what all the fuss was about during one of her countless daily chores, peeking in at the back of the crowd with a heap of wash-ready sheets in arm and inwardly debating whether to stay or go. Just what were those two doing now, stirring up this kind of commotion?

This Weyr certainly was bubbling with unusual amounts of activity recently-- but who could blame it? Even she had felt the faintest twinges of excitement during the Touching, so really, everyone was bound to get just a little buzzed.

(Still... betting wasn't really her game, even if she'd had a hand in part of it behind the scenes.)

Best to slip out again and get the laundry done quicker.

"Thank you...Rinfala?" Firyal really needed to start learning other Candidates' names. Maybe by the next Hatching she'd be able to match names to more than a dozen faces.

She picked up one of the scraps of hide that had been allocated for recording people's bets along with a stylus. Her handwriting was actually disgustingly neat, courtesy of her mother's work as an archivist and her grandparents' work in the Healercraft. Using a wall, she wrote down her guesses, remembering the glimpse she'd caught through the well-used peephole:

Thoroughbred: blue
Quarter Horse: green
Kiger Mustang: bronze
Arabian: green
American Paint: green
Shetland: blue
Clydesdale: brown
Gypsy Vanner: brown
Akhal Teke: bronze
Nightmare: queen
American Sport Horse: green
Sorraia Mustang: blue
Andalusian: brown
Friesian: green
Sandalwood Pony: blue

Finished with her guesses, she looked questioningly at Rinfala, holding out her guesses. "That's it, then?"

Yeah, I got lazy. Please pretend Firyal described the eggs.

Knew I forgot something. Vaythel thought as he specified exactly which eggs he thought would have which color in them. He recalled that he had also forgotten an egg, so he tucked that one in last, writing the word Nightmare in quickly.
Gypsy Vanner: Gold
American Paint: Blue
Thoroughbred: Bronze
Arabian: Green
Kiger Mustang: Blue
Shetland: Green
Clydesdale: Brown
Akhal Tekhe: Brown
Nightmare: Blue
He looked up only to see more people arrive, some of them filling out the forms and tossing the showy announced guy an eighth of a mark. Vaythel folded the paper in half crisply as he set the payment on top of it and slid it towards the girl that was taking the forms with a slight smile.
"This should be interesting, in the very least."

Tisiphone
P'ree heard the call for betting and his eyes lit up, he had been trying to get his hands on a firelizard with no luck at all, poker just didn't seem to be his game whenever an egg was bet. He walked up to the crowd gathering around the group of what seemed to be mostly candidates.

"I'll turn you in for hosting a game," P'ree's voice boomed as he approached the young man, and pausing for a moment a wry smile spread across his face, "Unless you let me in on the game!" He produced a 1/8 of a mark and held it out to the young man.

Iawanth, do you have any speculations on what color is in each egg? Heard any ideas from other dragons?

I've heard a few, but you never can tell, especially for this clutch
, Iawanth replied.

And oh dear… Mal temporarily tried to make himself as small as possible, in the hopes of becoming invisible. He was so certain this was going to work! Unfortunately, a rider-----a Bluerider, by the look of his knot----had indeed found the game. Mal’s mind scrabbled like a mouse on a particularly stubborn wheel, trying to find a good way out of this. Oh? Me, sir? didn’t seem like it would do the job… thankfully, P’ree stopped the incoming heart attack by saying he was just interested in joining the game.

Grinning with relief, Mal accepted the 1/8 mark and said, “Well, you had me going for a second there. Next time, say the second part first and the first part second, will you? Anyway, you can either guess the colors in the dragon eggs or you can enter a raffle.”

P'ree laughed and clapped the young man on the back, "I'd like to write down my guesses on what's in this clutch." Consulting with Iawanth he came up with a few guesses and wrote them down as they thought of them. Were they right? Probably not, but the price was right and apart of the fun was being able to think of the answers. The only obvious egg was the queen.

"I've been wanting a firelizard for turns, never seems to be my luck," he chuckled and handed over his guesses. "I'll be tracking you down after the Hatching."

The fidgety Candidate fingered the piece of paper, still not sure if he should enter or not. He did have such sharding awful luck with these things... with anything, come to think of it, but... But it was a flitt egg that could possibly be a Queen, and it was only an eighth Mark, so...

He quickly scribbled his name (mostly) legibly on the piece of paper, handing it and the eighth Mark to Mal. "I'd like to enter the raffle, please," he said. He couldn't bet, or guess on what was in each egg. The only one he was sure of, which anyone was probably sure of, was the Queen egg. That was most likely due to the Queen's behavior with that particular egg, but either way that was the only one he knew for sure. The raffle would suit him much better; he wasn't good at guessing, especially when it came to what would hatch from each egg.

"Yes'm, it should be that, good luck to you bluerider, and you're in." Trying to deal with each participant in turn, Rinfala glanced up at Koios, eyes intent but not unfriendly. She simply had a job to do, and since business was warming up she didn't have much time or patience to dally too long with each 'customer.' "Once the Hatching's over we'll set up in the same spot so everyone can pick up their winnings."

Quinnel paused mid-step when she heard the call, tilting her in curiosity.

‘ Flitt eggs, hm?’ she eyed the Brown clinging to her shoulder speculatively. She raised a finger and poked the flitt, earning an irritated hiss. She raised an eyebrow at that, and then shoved the mental image if a Rising Green flitt to Mud. Mud stilled at that and Quinnel could feel the flitt’s interest.

“ Hm, thought so. You’ve not had much luck with the lady-flitts, no. Maybe I give someone nice an egg, yes, and maybe it hatches into a lady-flitt, you’ll have better luck, hm?”

With that in mind, Quinnel made her way to the group, pausing only when she realized that she really didn’t know much about the Clutch on the sands. Her brother had described some of the eggs, but she hadn’t actually seen them. She supposed that between Westren’s comments, Mud, and Winath, she’d manage to come up with some decent guesses.

Eyes traveling from the noisy announcer, they landed on a familiar face.

“ Hm, you’re name was Rinfala, maybe, yes? Your little egg hatched, hm? Making eggs of its own?”

To be fair, Rinfala and Mal had their work cut out for them in getting decent guesses. Descriptions had somehow been circulated through the Weyr, but since there wasn't a Touching to be had...well...honestly, Rin was glad she was handling the paperwork instead of betting herself.

"She did," Rinfala replied, nodding. "A fine bronze to fly her, too. Lots of energy." To put it in a 'positive' light...Aeron was a very enthusiastic defender of his brood. "A big clutch, eight of which are up for grabs. All it takes to get in is an eighth-mark and your guesses here, or your name if you're not the guessing sort."

Someone was giving away flit eggs?

Jisken's father had always taught him to never turn away something if it was free. Then again, he'd also taught him that everything had a price, and as he listened to the man's little speech, he realized that this particular instance would cost him some thought and one eighth of a mark. Gambling was a waste, he'd been taught, but a flit could be really useful, and Jisken had yet to use any of the marks he'd earned from his last trip to Igen.

And then he thought he saw Firyal at the betting tables, and figured the least he could do was wind his way towards the front, to get a chance to say hello again. He waited his turn, then looked to the man who seemed to be holding the event, though the whole while he kept Firyal in his peripheral vision. "What's this about a raffle?" He asked, trying his best to appear engaged in this whole gambling thing.

Quinnel hummed in response and pulled out an eight mark and put it by Rinfala, grabbing a piece of paper to write on. She pulled slightly away from the crowd as she wrote and thought, her eyes sometimes getting a glazed look as she debated with Winath. When she finally finished, her list of answers had smudges and scratch-outs and would’ve been quite hard to read – her spidery handwriting was light and crooked – had she not circled her final answers.

Berjint gazed upon the merry chaos caused by the betting, bemused by the frantic and joyous attitudes. He fingered his own money and thought about his options. Even having touched them, he wasn't willing to bet any sort of money on what would come out, but this looked like such fun too. Everyone seemed to be having a good time, and he felt the urge to participate.

He opted for the safer 'bet', and moved forward. "I'd like to enter the raffle," he offered, holding out his eighth-mark. He felt a little silly, amongst all these others, hoping to win a flit egg. But then again, if he didn't try, he'd never win. So he smiled as he let the bit of money go. "Name's Berjint." A flit would be an awesome little friend to have, very nearly like having a dragon, or so he thought. He himself didn't know much about them, for none in his tiny Hold had any. That very thought, in fact, kindled more excitement for the possibility of winning. He could be the first from home to have one!

If his mother, or brother, ever caught him doing something like this, Bachi would probably be cut up, ground, and served in the next breaded meal. Luckily, neither one was here to say anything about it.

Another unfortunate thing was that he didn't have a great deal of money to begin with. However, like any good betting soul, this didn't matter in the slightest. With widened eyes, he peered after the other candidates (and some that weren't, too!). Mal's announcement was ringing in his ears and it pumped his blood a bit to know.

He spotted Berjint and grinned. If his kitchen mess-mate was betting, why shouldn't he? With a new added air of confidence, he strode his way up with his eighth-mark in hand.

"I want to give my hand a try at betting. I hear all we have to do is scribe our guesses for the eggs?" Really, how hard could this be? He'd get one of those flit eggs for sure!

{{Lame post to add in new eggs}}

Just as Quinnel was about to leave, a prod from Winath made her pause. Agreeing with the Green said, she turned around and snatched back her paper.
