“Maybe I’ll get tired of using gloves,” Mal said with a vague wave of his hand. “But I know I’ll never get tired of having all ten fingers. It’s a ‘maybe’ statement versus a fact, you know. Facts will always win out.” Unless the maybes were really awesome and kept being repeated enough, of course. If enough people believed something, it became fact.
“Although I don’t think Aeron really would remove a whole finger. Maybe only part of one. I know I’ve still got the scar from when he was hatched. See, right there?” He moved over to Rin’s side and showed her the small scar on his index finger; it wasn’t much, but it still proved that Aeron had been a vicious little biter from birth. Er. Hatching.
Although that wasn’t present at the moment. At the feelings of worry and concern from Shim, Aeron immediately calmed down and cooed at his current mate, reassuring her that he wasn’t going to leave her or their clutch. There was no telling what these people might do if he did that! He protectively huddled down against the Gold and the eggs before hissing at the humans again, lest they forget that he was there.

...Rin had to admit Mal had a point. It was a hard roll to eat, but if a creature was truly incorrigible, then you simply had to take the neccessary precautions. Bravery didn't matter a grain of sand in Igen if you ended up missing fingers, toes, ears, or any other number of limbs that an angry beast could bite off. And considering that Rin prided herself on not being stupid, Mal's scar proved very convincing. "Yeah," she muttered reluctantly. "Let's hope they don't turn out like that."
With a soft croon, Shim bumped Aeron with her muzzle. He was brave and strong and he protected their eggs very well, and the people wouldn't dare harm them around him. She...she'd bite them herself if they tried! Or at least, she'd screech loudly, and then Aeron could bite them. It was best to stay out of trouble.

Actually, Mal wasn’t sure if Aeron really could bite off a whole finger. But the firelizard could certainly do some serious damage to the ligaments, possibly permanent. As a Harper, Mal simply couldn’t allow that to happen. “I dunno much about this sort of thing. Aeron’s temperament could’ve just been a random thing and maybe his babies won’t get any of it. Either way, it would be best to keep his… you know… part in this secret. Just in case.”
The Bronze firelizard churred back at Shim, feeling quite pleased with the mental image of himself as a brave defender. If anyone tried to touch their eggs, he really would bite them. And bite hard! He clacked his jaws as a demonstration and hissed at the humans once more.
Mal ignored him, since Aeron hissing wasn’t exactly new. Now, if the firelizard ever stopped hissing, that would be a cause for alarm.

Rinfala had her doubts, but she kept quiet. While runners, herdbeasts, wherries, and almost any other 'lesser' beast tended to inherit some fraction of its nature from its parents, she'd seen enough Hatchings to know that dragonkin weren't neccessarily the same. One egg could contain the meekest dragon imaginable, and the next an angry creature that mauled anyone in the path of its rider. Flits were almost like tiny dragons, so...mouth twisting, she had to admit yet again that Mal had a valid point. For all his snarkiness...he was smart. "Yeah, I wouldn't advertise it. ...Guess we should let them be until the novelty's worn off." Maybe if the pair weren't so starry-eyed over their new clutch, they'd be less protective.
...Maybe.

Mal would be the first to admit that he wasn’t book-smart, except a lot of other people would be happy to say this first. But he did have a natural mix of guile and good ol’ fashioned common sense which seemed to be rather uncommon these days anyway. Hmm… he glanced over at the cooing pair of firelizards and tried to imagine Aeron not being all bitey and possessive. It could happen, he decided, but it probably only happened when he wasn’t looking, which rather made him wonder if it happened at all. It was that old question about the tree falling and whatnot.
“Right. Well, maybe by the time the Hatching is over, they’ll be more relaxed. Anyway, I’m off to get some food. Aeron, come on.”
Aeron yawned, showing exactly what he thought of Mal for the time being. Right now, Shim was far more important.
“Fine, be that way. Brat.”
