"Oh, please do. I'd be delighted to see you there." Willow's eyes closed slightly. Although the feeling of being preened by a Mus was a little unusual, it still brought on the same feelings of contented well-being as any preening.

She watched Honeysuckle work with interest, perking up a little as she heard the featherstyler's gossip. "I have heard of the Summer Strut." She replied, ear-tufts perking with interest, "But someone's bringing it back after all these years? What's that all about?"

"I honestly don't know why he's doing it," she said with a slight frown, "But I suppose everyone will know who Strangedye is after this. And only Noctus knows if that's good or bad."

It was slightly annoying that an overdyed nobody might earn a reputation by doing something that had very little to do with his task. A tiny part of it was annoyance that she hadn't thought of something similar, but then she didn't need ploys to draw customers. She comforted herself that something would most likely go tail up and that he could just as easily get a bad reputation from being associated with the whole thing.

"I heard that he'll allow hybrid aberrants to compete this season," she said, and then gave Willowbreeze's right foot her complete attention as she tried to come up with a way out of the unsafe topic of conversation she had blundered into, "You could join, perhaps? I've seen pure types with a lot less attractive feathers."

She wasn't sure she had dodged the Serpe just yet, and while Willowbreeze was good looking for an aberrant Honeysuckle had a hard time believing she would stand a chance in the competition. But you never knew of course.

"I must say I haven't heard of Strangedye before... I suppose hosting such an event would be a good way of reaching customers." She smiled at Honeysuckle, as if guessing as to the nature of her thoughts, "But really, word of beak is just as good a way of getting new clients. I will be sure to tell my friends about your superior work."

As the featherstyler attended to her talons, Willow cringed a bit inwardly. 'Pure Types' again. She wasn't sure if the words of the other female were meant as an awkward sort of compliment, or a veiled insult. She took a deep breath, then sighed. "Ah, thank you."

"I'm not sure how my future mate would feel about me parading my plumage before the whole forest. Something about it seems a little... shallow. Besides, I have my task, and other things to attend to."

After a thoughtful pause she added, "Although, it might be fun. Are you planning to enter? You are quite lovely yourself."

Honeysuckle nodded as Willowbreeze explained her reasons not to enter, all very good ones. It might be a bad move to join a beauty contest early in a new relationship.

"Although, it might be fun. Are you planning to enter? You are quite lovely yourself."

"Me?" Honeysuckle's ear tufts rose a notch, and for a moment she left the sharpening stone hanging unmoving in the air, "Oh, no. I haven't even thought about that. I don't know if... No, I don't think so. But thank you!"

But the idea was sparked, and she would think about it later. For now she had some wax to apply. And then maybe her special fragrant powder blend. It was an improvement to a common cure to keep pests and ticks away, and it had the added benefit of making the feathers look nice. The scent wasn't all that bad either, considering some of the more common tick repellents stank to the high heavens.

"I have a powder that will make your feathers look even better," she said as she started to apply the wax, "It will also keep ticks away. I hate those pesky things, and sometimes they follow my mate home so to speak. More of a hunter problem perhaps, but I use it myself too."

"Of course. I'm sure you would do well, and if you style your own feathers, it might be a bit of a chance to impress potential customers with your skills."

Willow sat quite still as Honeysuckle continued to work, only speaking up at the mention of tick powder, "Ticks can be such a nuisence. I don't usually have much of a problem, but I do come in contact with Sentinels of all tasks in my line of work. The powder sounds very nice... Ah, as long as the scent isn't... disagreeable."

The young female correctly assumed that use of one of the coventional remedies might be worse for business than the ticks themselves. Afterall, who would want to go see a smelly Bard? Or worse, mate with one?

Honeysuckle put the wax down and selected a bag from the basket instead. With the aid of both beak and will she opened it and then levitated it in front of Willowbreeze. A well trained Apothecary or Medic might be able to pick out the individual herbs in the powder, but to a regular Sentinel they would most likely just blend together to a pleasant aroma.

"Judge for yourself," she said and smiled, "I like the way it smells but I find that most Sentinel won't even notice it. Some companions with keener sense of smell can usually tell that their master's scent is different."

She hooted a command to Feather, and the Mus started to prepare samples of the wax and the powder for the Bard. Willowbreeze's connection to a Chestnut family had bumped her up from any old Aberrant to a customer that Honeysuckle was determined to keep. She wouldn't talk payment tonight. It would be enough that the Bard owed her a favour. Favours made the forest go around... and the fact that quite a few Sentinels owed her favours made Honeysuckle rich, from a Sentinel's point of view.

"Ah, that is pleasing!" Willow smiled, happily surprised by the subtle herbal scent of the powder. She could detect something like wild mint in the fragrance, and possibly marigolds, but beyond that the odor wafting from the bag of powder was just a blend of herbal scents. "I think it smells quite nice, and I doubt Zephyr will be at all bothered. I have just the one Parus."

In truth, Willow was inordinately fond of her little winged friend, even though Zephyr would never win any prizes for his intellect. She found the Parus useful, and pleasant company, although his conversational skills left mush to be desired. In the early morning she often drifted off to sleep to the sound of his cheery little voice singing up the sun.

It did not escape the bard's notice that payment had not been discussed, but she didn't bring the matter up. After all, it was for Honeysuckle to set the price for her work, as compensation had not been arranged up front. She was obviously a skilled featherstyler, and Willowbreeze suspected that her services would be costly, but this was a special occaision. Besides, she never seemed to run short of food, or anything she really needed, so the worst that could happen was for her to due a few extra performances, or perhaps spend more time hunting in the following nights.

"That's a good thing about bird companions," Honeysuckle said and nodded, "My Mus can be a bit touchy when it comes to scents. I've heard all the mammal companions can be more sensitive but I've never talked to a Keeper about it."

She started to apply the powder, using nudges from her will to help distribute it evenly among Willowbreeze's feathers. She worked with a skill and ease that came from repeating the same task over and over again, and was soon done. She tilted her head from side to side to survey her work, and as an afterthought she used her scissors to snip off a small frayed part of a feather that destroyed the perfect look. There!

"Now flap your wings to get the excess powder off" she instructed, "Do you want me to put some on Zephyr too?"

Feather had lined up the samples next to the basket, but she didn't stay idle. The Mus could sense that the appointment would soon come to an end, and had learned that it was better to start cleaning before Honeysuckle had to tell her to.

"Hm, makes sense, I suppose. I don't really know much about companions, to be honest."

Willow flapped as instructed, which not only shook the excess tick powder off her wings, but created enough of a breeze to lift the loose bits off the rest of her body, too.

"That's a good idea. He actually picks up more ticks than I do, crawling around the forest floor as he does." She shook her head. Like many Sentinels, Willow preferred to stay off the ground as much as possible. It was a dirty, dangerous place down there. "For whatever reason, Zephyr seems to love eating insects from the ground."

"Zephyr!" She called, and the little Parus fluttered over at once. It was not only good training that made him prompt, but also the fact that he had been bored, simply waiting around for something to happen. Zephyr had concluded some time earlier that featherstlyer visits were not as much fun as perfomances.

"Hold still, and let Honeysuckle put powder on you. It won't hurt." Willow assured her Companion as he took up a perch beside her.

"'Kay!" Chirped Zephyr as he looked at the powder with curious eyes. As he had seen Willow do, he stretched out his wings and stood still, so the powder could easily be applied.

"Good bird." Willow cooed approval of his actions. "He's a clever mimic, when he pays attention." She told Honeysuckle.

"I didn't know they can mimic behaviours too," she said as she started to tick-proof Zephyr. With such a small body it didn't take long. "I can see how it would be useful in your line of work. There! All done, little one. Just flap to take the excess off."

Honeysuckle couldn't help but admire Willow's control of her companion. Most Parus she had seen was little more than stupid but pretty singing ornaments, and she didn't expect them to be very useful. But this one seemed well trained, and while she would have little use for a companion like Zephyr, it could clearly aid the bard in her task.

"All done," she said and smiled, "And if you find your mate a bit too scruffy looking for your tastes I wouldn't mind fixing him up too. I do my mates feathers and dye to keep him presentable."

The appointment was over, but Honeysuckle made it clear that she wouldn't mind seeing Willowbreeze again. And if she ever needed the favours of a bard, or needed to get in touch with a Chestnut family, she knew who to ask.

Zephyr fluttered his little wings, sending a small cloud of powder into the air. He peeped cheerfully at the two Sentinels, then started to preen himself. The bird appeared to be flattered that he was suddenly the subject of the featherstyler's ministrations.

Willow was undeniably attached to her musical companion. She found that his abilities to copy her sounds and actions made up for his lack of coherent speech.

As Honeysuckle spoke, Willow chuckled softly. "I will certainly keep that in mind." Some males could be lazy about their grooming, but she suspected the gentleman Hollysong had selected would at least attempt to make himself attractive for their first meeting.

"Thank you very much for your time, and without notice as well... I will surely tell my friends about you, and how pleased I am with your work." Willowbreeze was not merely flattering the other female-- she knew very well that word of mouth recommendations were a valued commodity.

As she examined the gleaming, almost reflective sheen Honeysuckle's talents had added to her plumage, Willow was very pleased. This looked to be the first of many visits to this particular featherstyler....

"Thank you so much, Honeysuckle. It was a pleasure to meet you." Willow was pleased to note that she did not even need to preen a single feather in preparation for flight-- each one was properly in place. "I hope I will have the honor again soon."

"The pleasure was all mine," Honeysuckle said with a genuine smile. Willowbreeze was glowing, and it was not only thanks to her own excellent handiwork. Ah... She remembered her first attempts at the mating game and the thrill of courting. If all went well Willowbreeze would soon build her first nest and care for her first clutch. And Honeysuckle envied her a little...

"Do come back to tell me more about this gentleman of yours," she said with a wink, "Good night, and good hunting!"

She would have to tell Sanguine about her new customer when he came back from hunting. He might not approve of her mixed heritage, but if she was going to keep this valuable connection to a Chestnut family she would need him to stay civil when Willowbreeze visited again.
