Giving it a moment more, so she could remember this beat, adding it to her infinitely growing collection in her mind, she lingered. This was a calming harmony, and not one that she would forget. Eventually, she pulled away, ending their embrace with another quick nuzzle to his cheek, before turning back towards the way they were going before she had stopped them.

"I have shown you something that is dear to me, Mourning Fog. Have you anything to share?" She said this lightly as she began to walk forwards again. The water began to get deeper here, no longer a mere creek, now upto about their knees. It would get upto about their chests before they came to a spot where they could crawl up onto the roots and out of the water, should they choose to.

Mourning Fog trotted to her side and was silent for a short while. About me? he thought. For some reason he didn't remember most of his life, the farthest memories he had were still adult years. "Uhh...I have a twin sister.." he said, shrugging. "There's not much interesting about me, I'm afraid. Unfortunately I don't think I'm a very exciting character" he chuckled. Then he sighed a little, feeling that he missed out on much of his life. He never even bothered to ask his family about his younger years.

She looked at him, and saw what she interpreted as a sort of sadness in his eyes. She wondered what could be wrong for a second, but not wanting to encourage this sadness, she nudged his should instead and started racing up the incline to the trunks of the mangroves, yelling, "Catch me if you can!" It was a rather hefty climb, one that she did numerous times a day. There were many footholds and such, so it was more or less a matter of just leaping up and forward until one got to the top.

Having done this so often, she of course reached the top first. She lay down on the edge, and looked down to see how far Mourning Fog had gotten. A warm smile had made its way across her lips, and a teasing tone came into her voice. "Come on Mourning Fog! Come run with me!"

Surprised at the burst of energy after the calm moment that occurred before, he startled a bit before running to the base of the tree. Looking up, he saw Life-Pulse watching him from above. Her smile warmed his heart and contagiously, made him smile as well. "Not much of an athlete.." he said to himself as he jumped a few of the steps. Normally, he would travel to his destinations slowly and carefully, each step a graceful one. But this being some sort of a race, he tripped and stumbled as he traversed the trunk to where Life-Pulse laid at the top of it.

Sunwing took off from the water, letting out a small splash with her feet. She squawked in what seemed like laughter at Mourning's futile attempt at the climb. She landed next to Life-Pulse before he was even halfway there.

Huffing, he finally made it to her with a few shallow scrapes on his knees. The pain stung, but it was far from unbearable. He smiled at her again, catching his breath. "At your side, milady" He said in between breaths.

She giggled at the buck as he braved the climb. Sunwing had settled next to her and seemed to laugh with her. It was all in good fun, though. As he neared the top, she made faces at him. When he clambered over the edge and panted his reply, all she could do was laugh a little harder, and maybe roll over.

Laying on her back, she smiled up at him as he caught his breath and said, "No more races for you, huh?" What she did next may have been dangerous, but she'd also done it so many times before that it didn't faze her anymore. She tilted her head back until it was lolling off the edge and looking at the ground below upside-down. After a few seconds, when the buck seemed to have caught his breath, she brought her head back up and said, "The world is such a wonderful place. Don't you think?" She stood up and wandered right upto the trunks and gazed straight up into their branches, "The life sings to us, and all the little animals play, and the water trickles soothingly. And from up here, up on these tall mangrove roots, I see it all. And now you do, too." Her eyes seemed to glitter and shine as she watched a pair of birds fly past, darting in and out of some sort of aerial dance.

Mourning Fog caught his breath and listened to each word that Life-Pulse said. He was a little surprised when she let her head hang off of the trunk, but couldn't help but think it was a cute thing to do. It made him smile again. He looked around with her but eventually his eyes wandered to her markings again. Her bright eyes glowing in the swamp. He realized he was staring and quickly looked at the trunk. His eyes ran up and down the grooves in the bark, finding ant trails and other bugs racing past. He stepped out of the way of a beetle before looking up again to see if she had noticed his staring.

When the buck looked up again, she was caught mid-stare. He was not an especially eye-catching buck, but he was handsome, no doubt. His coat calmly blended from light purple to pale pink and his light eyes almost spoke on their own. She was captivated by this smooth-talking male, but she wasn't about to outwardly admit to it. Well... no more than her casual flirting of course. He'd have to try harder than that to get her to settle down!

Mourning Fog was surprised to see her looking back at him. She must have seen me staring! he thought and nervously looked around him at the swamp. "Uhh...mmm" he stuttered, having completely lost the genteel persona he had. She made him terribly nervous and he could feel his cheeks burning. Pawing at the ground, he stepped from side to side and lost his footing. He flailed his legs about, trying to stay on the trunk, and hit the wood flat on his face, his legs sprawled out. He groaned and winced, not daring to look up at her. Ughh she probably thinks I'm a fool now. What a horrible thing to happen to me at this precise moment...

The sun was very steadily making its decent towards the horizon, and this was what Life-Pulse turned to look at when the buck averted his eyes, blushing red. She could hear him being jittery and all at once there was a flail and a crash. She looked back over to see him, face down and wincing. "Oh my! Are... are you alright?" Her tail took on a nervous twitch as she came closer to see if he was hurt. She crouched down next to him and gently prodded at his neck with her muzzle, her ears up and alert, making sure there was nothing more that could endanger them at this very opportune moment.

"Are you hurt?" she asked in a worried tone, for the first time noticing the scratches on his knees. She very tenderly took to licking those clean, giving him a moment to respond to her inquiries of his fall.

"I'm fine, thank you for your concern" he said, her tongue stung his scrapes, but he didn't complain at all. Instead he stared at her again, her kindness and closeness to him compelled him to do so. He hadn't even moved from his straddled position on the trunk. She had left him speechless and paralyzed. He leaned a little closer to her, almost inches apart, then pulled his head back at the last second and looked away. His eyes found the sunset, and they lingered there for a moment.

She glanced up at him when he replied and gave him a bit of a scoff. When she finished cleaning his scratches she looked him over once more, expecting the buck to have said he was alright even if he wasn't. Deciding he really wasn't hurt, beyond the scrapes, she stood next to him and followed his gaze.

The sunset was beautiful. It conquered the sky, spreading a rainbow of colors across the expanse. Oranges, reds, and purples were painted behind the retreating globe of fire. She was entranced by this and had, for the moment, lost track of what the buck was doing.

Mourning Fog looked up to see her watching the sunset with him. Standing up quietly, his heart fluttered as he continued to look at her. In a burst of courage, he quickly gave her a peck on the cheek, right amongst the glowing curls of her markings. He moved back a little bit to see her reaction, his heart beating faster and harder than ever before. For a moment, he regretted his rash action, but he couldn't contain it any longer.

Sunwing took flight and moved to a tree farther away, watching intently from her distance. She seemed concerned and interested.

Mesmerized by the sunset, she didn't see the buck until after he planted a kiss on her. Her reaction was to turn to face him, confusion spreading across her features. She was at a loss of what to do. She wasn't upset... no... she liked him... but... What should I do? He... kissed me. Not being able to come up with an appropriate reaction, she tilted her head at him, and offered a small secret grin as she lowered her head a little and turned back towards the sunset, but sidled closer to the buck who had just offered his own feelings upto her.

A small wave of relief washed over him as she moved closer. He turned to watch as the sky darkened to a deeper pink, red, and eventually blues and purples. It was a strange combination of colors, but pleasing none the less. He moved his head to nuzzle hers, hoping they wouldn't have to move from this spot. He looked back to the sky and saw a single star twinkling above and eyed it for a while.
