Oya stuck out her tongue at her brother, after she had neatly run straight into her father's side. She hadn't been able to put on the breaks either, she had been so desperate to get there ahead of her brother. And she was pretty sure she had, because she felt the impact of her brother after she ran into her dad.
"See! I won, I'm faster than you are." She said, puffing out her chest happily. "And my shell is way prettier than yours is!" She claimed, without even looking at his shell... or hers for that matter. Really, she was just aiming to beat him right now, there was no other plan going on in her head. Just had to beat her brother.
"Come on daddy! My shell is the prettiest!" She said bouncing since she had already been the fastest and won the first part of their little competition. Oya was convinced she could win the second as well... even though she really hadn't paid much attention to what she had taken.
It was just a shell after all...

Hadaya, winded still from all the bumping, sighed as Oya celebrated her win. He hoped Leta wouldn't take it too hard. Afterall, he didn't want to upset either of them. This was supposed to be a little game. He just wanted one little game to go well, and that was it! All he needed to let him know that he might be cut out for this 'father'ing thing.
"Okay, okay, let me look. I'll decide which is prettier!" he was beginning to think this was a bad idea. If Oya's was prettier then Leta would be mad for losing both parts, but if Leta's was decided to be prettier than Oya might figure out, or assume, Hadaya was just trying to be fair to the two of them.
She was pretty sharp.
He looked at the shells for a long moment, not really taking in which was prettier so much as thinking about who he wanted to win this round. Looking at the shells, though, he was relieved to find that Leta's was, at least to Hadaya, the prettier shell.
"Sorry, Oya, but it looks like Leta got the better shell. Yours is still really nice, though. And it was a close game the whole way...?" he ended on a slight question, hoping it was enough to keep them from fighting.
Leta grinned hugely.
"I WON. HAHAH. MY SHELL WAS PRETTIEST. YOU FAIL."

Oya glared at her brother, "You didn't win anything you little bum! Just because you picked some pretty shell because of a FLUKE doesn't mean anything! I was faster, and that's way more important!" She said, sticking out her tongue at him, confirming their father's worry that a win for both of them... was still pretty much a win for neither of them. Because they were both kind of sore losers, when you got down to it.
Still, in the back of her mind, she had been pretty sure her dad would call a tie no matter what. Even though her shell wasn't as pretty as Leta's was. But she guessed it only would have been by fluke anyway, because she hadn't really looked at it... not that she was about to admit that out loud.
Instead, she fully intended to gloat about being faster than her brother was.
"Dad! Tell him he didn't win! His shell was just pretty... pretty stupid!" She said, turning and sticking her tongue back out at her brother to make a point. She hated being wrong.

"Okay, okay," Hadaya tried to say soothingly, smiling. He lifted his front paws and put one on Leta's head and one on Oya's. It was an effort to keep them from leaping at each other, or something. He pushed down gently on Oya's head in warning when she turned to stick her tongue out at her brother.
"No fighting, guys. Come on, it was just a game. Let's head home, huh? We'll take the shells back with us."
"You should just take mine, since mine is prettier! Hers is just like all the others one, the ugly ones, but mine is special. She's just jealous," he looked at Oya pointedly, grinning with confidence and snorting through his nose as he held his head up pompously.
"Come on, none of that!" Hadaya pleaded, releasing them and dipping his head to pick both shells up with his jaws. He spoke through his teeth, "they're both good and I'll wear them around my neck if I can find something to string them together. Okay? Let's all go home."
In peace, he hoped silently.

Oya would have replied, but her father's paw made it trickier, "You're just... jealous that you're a slow-poke and that you can't keep up with me!" She told him, though she managed to get her balance back and trek off after her dad.
Leta was always so like this! He could never just accept... anything! -not that she was going to admit she was pretty much the same way, but he could be such a big jerk!- But her dad wanted her to be quiet... so she would do her best. As long as Leta stayed quiet too. Because she wouldn't take anything he started complaining about lying down, no way!
"I think it will be a very pretty necklace." Oya said, puffing out her chest so that she would at least seem like the bigger lion in this case. She didn't even claim that her shell would be better looking.
Though she still thought it was.

Hadaya sighed. He imagined they were all going to be whining for a while yet. It would probably catch on in the den, when they got home, too. Undoubtedly Leta would get Fitina defending him, and then the whole den would be one big argument.
But the awkward lion didn't mind, so much. It was just who the cubs were and, really, he loved them for that. He just wasn't used to having to be the responsible one, to be the one looking out for others instead of being looked out for. He wanted to keep them all safe and happy, but he knew, inevitably, things would go awry.
It was just part of life.
Still, it was fairly loud and annoying. He sighed.
He looked down at Oya and smiled.
"It will be, I'm sure of it. Both you and Leta's shells will make it perfect."
Leta continued to spout his glorious shell-picking prowess all the way home, and did, in fact, seek Fitina out to back him up. He was challenging everyone to foot races, to prove he wasn't slow. Hadaya let the children play, sitting down and watching them, the two shells in his front paws.
It had been a good day. He was just happy to be home.
End!
