"Well, you're going to be a priestess, right? That sounds harder than being a guard, but not everybody can do everything," he asked, offering her a smile in return for his sheepish grin. He beamed when she complimented him, glad he seemed to be doing a good job- and glad to hear she didn't make a habit out of wandering so far from the lands. He brushed his paw on the ground thoughtfully when she asked about what guards do beside patrolling, shrugging.
"This is mostly what I've had to do," he answered, "I suppose if there was any trouble, we'd have to be ready to fight. And we keep an eye on the slaves, which is part of patrolling but sometimes just seeing what they're up to is all we have to do."
He smiled.

Ukene automatically smiled back, thinking his words over for a time before replying. "Do they mind that? I'd find it very distracting to have people checking on me all the time, but everyone says I have too short of an attention span anyway so that might be why."
She didn't comment on the fighting part because honestly, the thought made her a bit uncomfortable. Badiri certainly looked like he could handle anything that came his way but you never really knew, did you? At least a lot of the people in her Mom's stories didn't, and losing a friend would really suck. Then again, maybe they had some awesome training program that non-guards weren't allowed to know of and all the pride's guards were in actuality lean, mean, fighting-machines ready to take on a dozen attackers (or a hippo, because hippos were really scary) on their own at a moment's notice.

"I don't think they mind, and if they do they can't really say much about it, can they?" he shrugged and smiled a bit at her question about it, it was nice to consider their feelings but they were slaves, "It's not really all that often, all of the slaves accept their place. I think it's good to check in on them, anyway, though. If the Great Lion isn't keeping an eye on them, someone should. Don't you think?"
It made sense to Badiri, in the end. He wouldn't necessarily like being a slave but he had not been born into it. He had had the freedom to think about what he wanted, he wouldn't know since he wasn't in that situation. But keeping an eye on the slaves was important, if they lacked favor and supervision from the Great Lion.. they needed a little more direction and supervision from their fellow pride mates.
"What priest are you training to be?" he asked as he considered her comment on her attention span. Her mother, if he recalled correctly, was a historian. She had to have a good memory-- that went with attention, didn't it? Was that what Ukene was? He really needed to check his knowledge on the priests, apprentices were trickier to remember.

"Yeah, I guess so." She nodded thoughtfully - something like that probably went both ways. Ukene hadn't even considered that the slaves might like the safety that the guards keeping an eye on them offered, instead of disliking the distraction.
And at least being a slave in the Mwezi'Johari was better than being a slave lots of other places, if the stories from outside the pride were anything to go by. Though of course, that wasn't to say that there weren't those who wouldn't try to lord their superior position over those in lesser positions, but Ukene hadn't ever met anyone like that (or noticed them, anyhow) and the former King's change of station would probably deter anyone like that from their antics for a while, anyhow.
"Oh! I'm a Midwife, or, well, going to be anyhow - Mitsuki, that's the priest that's training me, she's awesome by the way, says I'll be ready to be a Midwife on my own when I'm older but I'm sort of nervous, you know? Not that Mitsuki hasn't trained me well - or at least I think she has, but maybe I'm not the best judge, but then, who would be? - but just, you know.." She looked nervous, right now, aware that she probably made even less sense than normal. But it was just so weird, thinking that she'd one day be on her own and helping lionesses and keeping track of the Great Lion's favor all on her own. Or sort of on her own, anyway. What if she messed up?

Badiri nodded when she said midwife. He knew what a midwife did but he, personally, had no experience or obvious current use for one. He would never be pregnant and until he had a mate, he wasn't likely to worry about that. Even then, he didn't doubt there were aspects of the position and situation that he would just never completely understand. As she rambled about Mitsuki and her worries, he offered her a smile.
"I think you'll be a very good midwife," he commented, "You're very friendly, I imagine it'd be much more pleasant to deal with when you're giving birth. I mean, I guess. I wouldn't know but that's what I think." Besides, Ukene was very pleasant to be around in general. He couldn't see that changing completely when she was at work, otherwise.. would she really be that nervous about it? He doubted it.

"Oh." Badiri was so nice! He knew just what to say, though his compliment did make her swish her tail in embarrassed happiness. No-one had ever said anything like that! Obviously her family had been very supporting, duh, but they were her family and getting a compliment from someone was definitely different, right? It felt different, anyway.
"Thank you! I'll definitely do my best and try to make them feel comfortable and get them the Great Lion's favour so they don't have to worry so much about their kids! I mean, if He's looking over them, you wouldn't need to be so worried about them wandering off or getting in an accident, because the Great Lion would definitely take care of them because he likes them, right? I mean, that'd make sense. And then their moms wouldn't need to worry. Right?" She was babbling, perhaps a bit more so than usual, but the slight fluttery feeling (from getting a compliment! Definitely!) was still there and she just couldn't stop herself.

"Right," Badiri nodded along with her, throwing in a couple agreeing sounds as she rambled on again, smiling the whole time, "And when the Great Lion needs a little help, that's where the guards come in. That's why we have to be middle class, you know." He grinned. They both seemed to take a great deal of pride in their work, that much was evident from their meetings and conversation and Baddie definitely noticed.
"Perhaps that's why I keep running into you, He's keeping an eye out for you when you wander so far away like this," he commented, then looked back toward the abandoned pile of flowers, "Did you want some help taking those back?" He puffed up a bit, feeling helpful.

She giggled happily - she felt like giggling a lot when Badiri was around, she'd noticed - and nodded. "He probably knows how much my mom and my siblings worry and decided to help them out."
"Oh, would you? That'd be awesome! I mean, I think I might have plucked too many and I was sort of wondering which to take and which to leave but it seems such a waste, don't you think? When I've already killed them and then just leave them there for nothing, I mean, that's just sort of sad." She went back and neatly divided the large pile into two smaller piles of wildflowers and sent a smile Badiri's way. "You're so nice, you know. I don't think I've ever met anyone as nice as you!"

His grin widened when she accepted his help and commented on how nice he was, feeling quite pleased with himself. It almost distracted it from the fact he had something to help her with now. He chuckled to himself when he snapped back into it, walking over and around to the opposite side of the flowers, standing by the one farthest from Ukene, assuming it to be the one he would be taking back.
"Thank you," he said, "You're the most interesting lioness I've met, for sure." It wasn't quite the same compliment but it was something. Life could be pretty dull, she seemed to be good at making sure it didn't stay that way for very long. He smiled more sincerely at her before ducking down to get a sniff at the flowers, then he took a careful mouthful by the stems, considering his options. The most obvious place that they would be was, well, his mane. He wasn't accustomed to carrying many flowers and he wasn't sure Ukene could make a whole trip back with a mouthful of flowers-- but then, he mightn't have had to say anything either. Still, he tilted his head down and attempted to push some of the flower stems into his furry chest.
"How's that look?"

"Awfully dashing!" She gave a laugh and nudged a flower nearly falling back into place with her nose, careful not to step on any of the flowers between them.
"The most dashing I've ever seen, in fact. We should make this the proper uniform for all the guards and all the bad guys would be too taken with your flowery handsomeness to ever attack!" She grinned mischieviously and tried to ignore the urge to giggle insanely from being near him. Seriously, maybe she should talk to her mom or something - what if she'd gotten some sort of sickness or something? It didn't sound like any illness Ukene had ever heard of, but then again, she was an apprentice Midwife and not some sort of healer, so what'd she know about being sick, really?

"I don't know about that," he muttered, but he was pleased with the compliment. He did a little circle to get some of the excited energy out, looking back at Ukene.
"OK then, let's go," he said, leaning down to pick up the rest of the flowers from his pile and then waiting for her to lead the way. They could take the flowers off to Ally but then, he supposed sadly, he would have to get back to patrol.

"Let's!" Ukene mimicked his actions and picked up her own pile, smiling around the flowers in her mouth. She didn't have a handy-dandy mane as large as Badiri's, but that was why she had Badiri to help out! Having friends was an awesome thing, really.
And when she got home she'd ask mom about this whole potential sickness thing.. if anyone knew, it was bound to be her!
((Fade-out here too? xD *gonna try and catch you on AIM*))
