Pearl opened the door, hearing the clear sound of the new hinges creaking under the pressure of the open door. She needed to be outside, to feel the feel of fresh air on her face, and have her hair whipped around by the wind as she ran through the forest. It was something she needed often, and definitely something she would refuse to surrender. The door closed behind her as she grabbed the doorknob and pulled the thin piece of wood shut. She took a step forward, taking a deep, unneeded breath. Her chest inflated slowly, the breath helping to slightly calm her nerves. But, the only thing that could completely calm her nerves was hunting, and that was definitely what she intended to do. The landforms and vegetation around her was immediately engraved in her mind as her new home. Something she would never forget, even if they moved. Because, obviously, they would eventually do. After about three generations when everybody in the little town of Mosier had forgotten about their strange, but gorgeous family. Pearl took a hesitant step forward, still subtly accessing her surroundings as if she were lost. Thoughts of her last home swirled around, taking complete control over her mind. Comparisons started making themselves visible, and clearly, their new living quarters were much better than their old accommodation. Here, it was so much more secluded, almost isolated from the rest of humanity--but not quite. She shook out the thoughts of her old home. It was just yet another home where she couldn't find the love of her life. The only person she knew would make her whole. It almost depressed her in the end. But, she would keep fighting, live just for that person that might someday need her as much as she needed them.
The forest was much more cramped than the one Pearl used to live in. Trees were much closer together, and where there weren't any trees, there were small plants that came up just a little taller than Pearl's ankle. The natural greens and browns around her comforted her to some extent, making her grin to herself. This was something she had missed in the moving process. In the plane and the car, you couldn't see or feel the wonderful sensations of the forest. Things she could never live without. The feel of the grass tickling her bare feet, the wind blowing lightly against her smooth, almost translucent skin, the taste of fresh air as she breathed it in heavily. This love of the forest is something she brought with her from back when she was human. The one thing that would always console her and listen to what she had to say when she wanted to say it. Like a diary, only much bigger and a lot prettier. Her first priority was to get acquainted with the unfamiliar forest she was in. The second bullet on her to-do list was to hunt so that she would be okay walking around with students. Self-control was a must, and Pearl was no perfectionist, so she at least had to hunt often enough to not even scare the humans. Of course she would still look like some other creature, and somebody's instincts would probably tell them to get away. That was probably what most of them should do, for it would make it a lot easier on her. But then again, that was what they should do, not what they would do. The naive humans would automatically be driven to become friends with the beautiful and alluring vampires. Not only would they be the talk of the school, the main gossip topic for little teenage girls and boys, they would also be annoyed. With all of the men and woman asking them out. Until they found out only two of them were actually single. Then it was only her the boys asked out. Sometimes she had trouble summoning up the self-control to restrain herself from punching them in the nose.
Pearl decided to get her first concern out of the way--like previously mentioned-- to learn the setup of this new woodland. She started walking around, deciding where most wild animals roamed, and where the area was almost completely deserted of animal life. Elk in the northwest, white-tailed deer in the south, grizzly bears in the east--although they are mostly female. Of course, they only feasted on the male gender, ad if they were to get a female bear, what if it ended up pregnant? Then they would slaughter two organisms without even trying, let alone meaning to. When everything seemed to be mapped out in her head, she decided to finally quench the annoying desire for blood that was burning violently in her veins. It forced itself into her throat, causing pain everywhere it went through. The thirst was just something she couldn't stand anymore--especially right now under the stress of a new move. She launched down the path, looking for the little group of elk again. Pearl really just wanted to hunt lightly today, and really hit the forest tomorrow. Especially when the territory was so very new to her mind.
When all of the medium sized animals appeared, she searched for large antlers. That would signal a buck, and that it was a bit older. She didn't like hunting the younger ones, as they had more to live for, longer to bask in the glory of life. Eventually one appeared, and she locked her huge, black eyes on it. The animal seemed oblivious to her presence, and she quickly thanked her keen vampire senses. When ready, Pearl sprinted towards the group. The mammals started sprinting away, especially the one she was aiming for. But, there was no way that it would be able to outrun her. Then it all happened so fast, just like always. The feeling of the hunt overwhelmed her, forcing her legs to stretch farther, to lengthen the stride. Forcing her ears and eyes to strain, even past her normal senses. Before she even had time to think about it, Pearl was only feet away from the elk, and she pounced, landing quietly on the animal's back. Then the animal fell to the ground, the impact booming through the forest, not so quietly. She stayed firm on the struggling animal, trying to sink her mouth into the creature's fur and flesh. As it tired itself out, she finally had enough time to get her teeth to pierce the flesh. The warm liquid started to flood into her mouth, making her taste buds all but dance with joy. The elk made a choking sound at the feel of her teeth coming in contact with its skin, then stopped struggling as its blood was come out the hole. The vein under Pearl's teeth pumped loudly along with the beast's heart, making the blood surf into her mouth even faster. She started to suck faster, wanting to finish and just go back home. When the animal was sprawled, cold and lifeless, across the grass, Pearl finally felt her feet touch the ground. She wiped her lip with the back of her hand, hearing her knuckles crack as they swept across her rock-hard skin.
Pearl started back towards home, her eyes like dark topaz. She hadn't hunted as much as she should have, but it was enough to last until tomorrow when she would go out there again, hopefully with family. A surge of pity for the animal she had drained made its way through her. Bad feelings always made their way through her after killing another living being, she just always figured it was a side effect to being bored and lonely. She racked her brain, trying to find how to stop the feeling. There really was no way to stop it, so Pearl just have into it, waiting until it started to fade away. As the newly bought house came into view, she started to sit down. She was sitting near the outskirts of the forest, just barely in their yard, and almost in the bramble of the little bit of woodland that they owned. boredom past through her, as she looked around, completely confused and not quite sure of herself.
