Matasoga would have flicked his eyes over to the new comer then back to this stranger but found his eyes lingering upon her a bit longer. Without looking away, he thrust his fork into one of the still very red pieces of meat (which he knew would have cooled already, and held it in the flame of a candle for just a moment before placing it on his tongue and slowly sinking his fangs into it and chewing the juices out, his eyes still playing over her curves.
He turned his eyes back to his steak only so that he wouldn't be caught staring. He noticed that most other humanoids used their eyes a good bit more than he. He had always assumed it to be because of his race, but when it came to stationary objects that he had already held and left in the same place, he could rather invariably pick them up again without needing to look at them to do so whereas a human might occasionally fumble once or twice before finding the exact placement. Of course the level of this ability was below even that of a parlor trick and he had nothing even close to the eyeless sight (or "blindsight," as some of the scholars called it) and applied only to things that he had already known the exact placement of. Still, it was somewhat convenient, from time to time.
At the woman's words and the stranger's acceptance he smiled, inwardly. Perhaps, in this instance, the stranger wanted to this woman along with them for more or less the same reason that most other men would have her companionship but was this really how parties were normally assembled? Just a grouping of those who happened to be present, with whoever was in charge just left to hope that they had the necessary power?
Based on the bards tales, he always assumed that it was ordinary to go about advertising, applying, and going through the proper channels before an adventuring party (like all of those that he had heard of in the bards tales) was put together. This way was certainly quicker, to be sure, but it seemed so chaotic and haphazard. If this was normal it was certainly not the sort of process that he favored but if it must be done to further his ends than he supposed it a necessary evil.
He continued carving up his steak, the rest of the pieces (having not been separated from the larger, warmer whole) not having cooled or needed to be warmed over a candle. He listened closely as they spoke, pleased at the strangers words that there would be some vetting process involved, even if it was only to be a brief and informal interview.

Eliae smiled, pulling the chair out and sliding around it to take her seat. Scooting the chair forward a little, she leaned towards the table, crossing her forearms on the wood. Whether it was accidental or purposeful that she was still providing both men with a decent view was difficult to tell but, nevertheless, the view was there. Her eyes moved between the men for a moment, taking the time to briefly study their features before speaking.

Her brown eyes finally settled back on Adustes just before answering his question. "Well, I have at least some knowledge of most creatures that you might encounter on this journey. I can also speak most languages." Her eyes continued to study Adustes as she awaited his response, curling her lips in towards her mouth and licking them as if to re-moisten them.

Adustes regarded the woman in silence for a few seconds, hoping she would continue. When it was apparent that she would not, he raised one hand to stroke his chin and the pair of iron rings that pierced it, and lowered his gaze to the tabletop, attempting to remove her appearance from the equation as he considered her usefulness.
Knowledge was always a useful tool, regardless of one's occupation. If she was in fact familiar with most of the creatures they would likely encounter, knowing which to take measures to avoid or flee the sight of could certainly mean the difference between life and death. Her mastery of languages, useful as it may be in diplomatic missions, would be all but useless where they were going. Few monsters would spare the time to chat in the midst of their own ambush. What the decision came down to in the end, however, is what she could do when violence threatened and words failed her.
After a moment he looked back up to the woman and said, "Such knowledge could be of use, however... if that is all you can offer, you sound more like a liability in times of conflict. Do you have any abilities that pertain to combat?"

Eliae giggled for a moment before answering his question. "You're kidding, right?" she said rhetorically. "I do have to know how to best fend off some unwanted attention. I've learned to use a few weapons, at the least, because of it."

The woman shifted her position a little bit, letting her shoulders relax and her chest lower just a little more. "I assure you, I'll be no liability," she added, grinning a little. Her brown eyes turned back to Matasoga, watching him for another moment before returning her attention back to this... most unusually dressed man before her.

Adustes' expression lightened a bit at that. So then, she was a warrior? She seemed confident enough, but he couldn't be certain she knew exactly what she was getting herself into. He decided that, after briefly informing her of some of the dangers the journey might pose, if she still seemed assured of herself he would have no reason to deny her.
"The Cold Wood is much more dangerous than alehouses more impoverished than this one. Are you confident enough in your abilities to stand against trolls or giants, should we happen across any? Or an angry barbarian tribe? Or any manner of beast that might now dwell within the keep?"

"If we find ourselves in such a position," she assured him, "I will fight to survive." Though she wasn't quite as capable as a tradition fighter was, she could effectively wield a number of weapons. Offering another slight smile, she added, "So far, I've had few troubles, and I'm sure I can manage more."

Eliae's last point seemed to be accentuated by the fact that she had no visible scars blemishing her fair skin. Again, her eyes briefly moved between the two men as she shifted just a little once again, this time to move her arms in a little, the insides of her arms just barely touching her chest.

Given her behavior thus far, particularly the wink, Matasoga was bemused if not intrigued by the woman. He was not entirely sure that he was wholly comfortable with the idea of her traveling with them, due to the high potential it held for various...Complications, but if what she said was true then she would indeed be more of an asset than a liability.
One thing of which he was certain was that if he did come along, he would most certainly not be bored.

"Very well. Welcome aboard," Adustes said with a smile.
He turned back to Matasoga and said, "I apologize for neglecting you. To answer your earlier question, I am alone in my venture but for the two of you, thus far. I had expected there would be more mercenaries looking for work with the recent change of events in the area....
"But I have only begun recruiting this evening. I will continue my search for suitable associates throughout the night, and tomorrow. After that, I hope to leave from here, so the both of you be certain to be back here and prepared to depart at dusk the night after next."
He stood in preparation to leave, just then recalling that there had been no introductions throughout the conversation. He turned back to his new companions and amended that. "I am Adustes Céasadh. What are your names?"

Matasoga would have liked to promise a small platoon of his own to be brought with them but the soldiers were granted by the government purely for purposes concerning the betterment of the country, not his personal use. Even if he could rationalize a way that this obviously personal venture was for national betterment, it would likely spur an investigation that would conclude otherwise.
Though the size of the group was small if it truly was abandoned and stayed that way, then the group would be best kept that way. Needless to say, the fewer involved, the fewer directions in which the reward would have to be split.
"My name is Matasoga," he said. "A pleasure to meet you.

Eliae couldn't help but to offer a slight and pleased grin at Adustes' acceptance. This would be an interesting venture, indeed, if the complications were scattered. She would have to be careful, though.

"Eliae," she said with a slight nod to both men. "I look forward to our next meeting." Her eyes flicked between Adustes and Matasoga for a moment or two longer. Figuring out how to use them would be interesting, indeed.

"And it's a pleasure to meet the both of you," Adustes replied. "I will be residing in this inn while I remain here, in the third room on the left on the second floor, if either of you need to contact me before we leave.
"Now, if you'll excuse me, I believe I've had all the luck to be had here tonight. If either of you might happen across another suitable recruit, feel free to him with you when we next meet. Until then, fare well."
He gave a shallow bow, then turned and walked toward the exit, almost immediately fading from view amid the shadows of the sparse crowd, despite his outlandish garb.

Matasoga wondered if his announcement was actually intended (at least in part) to let Eliae know where he was sleeping. Or perhaps it didn't even cross his mind. True to the mysterious stranger, Matasoga knew nothing aside from his name.
He decided that he'd not be outdone. He took a long drink of the dry red wine he'd selected and said, "The third room on the second floor? Hm. I'll see about getting an adjacent one, then. I'll see about checking into the fourth, then, or the second, if that's taken."
He tried his best (rather convincingly) to sound as though he were simply musing to himself rather than intentionally communicating something. He made sure to have a distant look in his eyes and never let them stray towards Eliae for a moment.
In one hand he swirled the wine in his glass with one hand, while he speared the last bite of steak with the fork that he held in the other. He bit the steak off of his fork, chewed it quickly and swallowed before finishing off his wine. He then stood up, taking up his spear and said, "I suppose it's time to check in."
He then walked towards the counter to present his voucher for the room and food.

Eliae found it a bit curious that both men had stated where their rooms were- or, in the half-dragon's case, where it would likely be. As a woman who loathed paying for much of anything, there would be no real way to tell which inn she would be staying in, let alone which room. Nevertheless, she smiled at both of them from her seat.

"I'll be around," she said, "though it shouldn't be too difficult for either of you to find me." Eliae watched Adustes and Matasoga both depart, a slight smirk on her lips. This would be an interesting trip, indeed, she thought. She would have to find out more about them, though she felt the likelihood of anyone knowing much of anything that she would find useful would be fairly slim.

Rising up from her seat, the woman finally made her way to the door. It was time for her to see what information she could turn up, as most anything would be better than the virtually nothing she would be working with now. Two nights from now, they would be leaving, she mused as she walked back out into open skies, taking a brief moment to look around. Perhaps she would find something useful- or at least something to kill the time.

Adustes exited the building, allowing the chill night wind to whip through his robes and bite at his face as he wandered the empty streets. Before long he came across another suitable tavern and entered, taking a seat in a back corner that afforded a decent view of the other patrons.
There he watched until the crowd dispersed. Most unfortunately, his earlier guess had been correct; his luck in the current endeavor had ended when he'd left the inn. The patrons of this tavern had all been simple folk of the town; commoners, merchants, and off-duty guards. He hadn't needed to speak with a single one to know that they wouldn't serve his purposes.
It was nearly dawn when he returned to the inn. It had been a long night, and he had been awake most of the day as well. He was exhausted. So he didn't bother with the common room; he headed straight up the stairway and to his room.
He entered the room and closed the door behind him. The morning's light was only just beginning to seep through the thin curtain, but already it was enough for his fey eyes to see clearly, so he found little point in lighting the oil lamp beside the bed. He stripped down to his breeches, leaving his bracers and necklace in place, and sifted through his pack, eventually pulling out a worn, black leather pouch and a vial of black ink. He sat on the edge of the bed and untied the pouch, unrolling it to reveal a number of polished blades and other small instruments one might find in an inquisitor's dungeon.
He licked his lips in anticipation of the sensations that he were to come, brushing his fingertips over his instruments. He didn't so much as flinch when a sharp hook bit into his little finger. After a brief inspection of his tools he pulled a somewhat blunted needle from the pouch and turned his attention to his side, tracing the needle lightly down over his ribs until he found the right spot. Several days previous, the wagon he'd been riding in had hit a particularly large bump, and caused an errant cut that disrupted one of his tattoos. As he only had any measure of privacy inside that wagon while on the move, he had put off further masochistic habits until now. He dipped the needle into the ink and began jabbing the tip through his skin. Once the flaw had been mended, he scanned over the rest of the large design, touching up a couple other places it had begun to fade, then tucked the needle back into the pouch. He would've liked to do more, but he was tired. Perhaps tomorrow....
He rolled the pouch back up and laid it on the small table, then collected his clothing and folded the garments, setting them in a pile beside the pouch. He returned to the bed, seated himself on the edge and inclined his head, wrapping his fingers tightly around the jagged unholy symbol still around his neck, and offered a prayer to his god before lying down and drifting off to sleep.

***

He awoke mid-afternoon and sat up, squinting and cursing the brightness of the light piercing the pathetic curtain. He checked the repairs to his tattoo to be certain it hadn't smudged as he slept. Yawning as he rose, he pulled his thick cloak from the table and draped it over the window, then shuffled to the other side of the room and knelt in the corner, back to the covered window. He preferred it to be as dark as possible when praying for his spells, when it wasn't prudent to do so at night. When finished, he dressed himself and exited the room. He passed by the inn's common room, deciding that since he would be sitting in another tavern all that evening, he may as well take his breakfast wherever he might end up.
The market was significantly more lively than it had been during his previous wanderings. He decided to take a different direction today, and was pleased he'd done so when his path led him to many outdoor shops, vending stalls, and art stands. The display was nothing compared to those of the larger cities in the south, but considering the size and recent events of this town, it was impressive. And the northern influence in the artwork was interesting, if nothing else.
He kept close tabs on his coin-pouch, especially where the crowds were thick or street performers were about. He knew well from his own childhood the opportunities such places presented to pickpockets. He gave a wry grin as he confirmed their presence, spotting a few cut purse strings dangling unnoticed on peoples' belts. He amused himself picking likely culprits out from the rest of the crowd as he walked along.
As he inspected the wares of a healer's stall, it occurred to Adustes that such was likely the role he would play among the party. That being so, it would be wise to procure a healer's kit. He focused his attention on finding one that would prove most useful.

Kalara had been watching the crowd, looking for a challenge. After a long three week journey to this godforsaken town, she had been amusing herself with picking the pockets of the drunken soldiers, but it had become boring. She knew she should be moving along, once she aquired some new supplies - she'd been running low on food, and her boots, shirt, and jacket were worn through. As she began to move from her darkened corner, her eyes caught a strange figure - as she took in his appearance, she could see the small erratic trail of blood following him. She could also see his coin pouch, and from the looks of it, it was holding more than just the few copper peices which her own held, and, judging from the fact he seemed wounded, he wouldn't be able to move as fast as she did. She formulated her plan: she would keep tabs on this stranger, find some new clothes and more food, before stealing his coins and leaving the town. It was best anyway - these people were unwilling to give her a room in any inn in town, apparently her kind weren't welcome here.
As it turned out, the man stopped at a stall close to the clothing stall. Ducking inside a little, she grabbed a new shirt and jacket, along with a sturdy pair of boots, and an additional pair of leggings, shoving them into her bag as fast as she could. The stall's keeper didn't even notice, though she knew he wouldn't - he was too busy watching the women walk by. Humans. They were all so wrapped up in themselves. Deciding that it wasn't worth getting food when she could just kill something out on the road, she turned her attentions to the stranger at the healer's stall. He didn't seem to be paying much attention to anything around him - he was too wrapped up in the equipment around him. She walked past him a few times, ascertaining where his coin pouch was, what was around it, and how he had attatched it to his person. Drawing a dagger from her sheath, she casually walked up behind him and stopped next to him, using her tail to operate the dagger, and her hand to catch the pouch as it fell. As soon as the pouch was in her hand, she turned and walked quickly but casually away, stashing her newfound money in her own pouch and pulling her long blue-black hair out of its' ponytail to aid her disguise.
