"I don't know of anyone who wouldn’t," he answered, before realizing it was probably a rhetorical question. In all honesty he knew there must be some people out there who just wanted to go to the Weyr and slack off. Some of the candidates must be skipping off duty and bribing other folk to do their work for them. If everyone was good, honest and hardworking they wouldn't need a Candidatemaster. He was glad that the Candidate he had Searched, at least, seemed willing to work.

H'dra was not altogether surprised when Dievath spoke to the girl, knowing very well that his dragon was a talker. He was extremely lucky that dragons didn't normally like talking to people other than their riders, otherwise his blue would be in everyone's head before they even saw him. Dievath, however, seemed to see no reason in the occasional conversation with another human. After all, nobody could replace His.

He was a little surprised at Santhea's honest devotion. "You really wouldn't get disappointed or sad if you had to wait for turns for a hatching? I mean everyone's told that their dragon might not be in the first clutch that they stand in and they shouldn't get discouraged, but I mean it should be disappointing, right?" Vaguely he remembered an incident with some of the candidates getting drunk after the Hatching because they hadn't Impressed and the resulting chaos. Hopefully Santhea wouldn't get involved in any of that.

Santhea paused, treading water, considering.
"Well.." she said, trying to use her imagination to put herself in that situation. "I would be very disappointed, I know that. My ftaher would be unbearable - I might even be so put off by him to be too scared to stand again. My father is.. influential. And I know he would somehow put it down to me. My mother would be most likely upset, and a little ashamed. Which in turn would shame me.." she mused aloud.

"I think I would stick to it. I'm not one for giving up." she paused, wondering if she knew herself well enough to guess her own actions in such an event. She had often got in trouble for her scarcity of giving up and her reluctance of admitting second thoughts, but with the crashing feeling of seeing the small, creeling creatures that may one day be a soaring majestic dragon, learning with you to care for each other to become a magnificent dragon pair - the feeling of losing that possible life on the hatching ground would be heady.

Santhea propelled herself backwards to look intently at the dragon they were bathing, then to turn her head to where she could see the shape of the weyrbowl.
"I'd be scared, ashamed, depressed. But, if those dragonriders can do it, then, so can I bear the feelings, and accept that fate. I would defintily stand again." She said the last confidently, and smiled at H'dra.
"Dragonrider, I can assure you won't regret searching me." she said formally, then grinned, the sun sparking off her teeth, as she leant against Dievath's muscled shoulder the scrup his back ridges. "Probably." she laughed mischeivously, brushing her hair off her face again before grabbing another handful of sweetsand.

The bluerider listened quietly as Santhea spoke, enjoying the fact that he did not need to carry the conversation himself. He was a little saddened by the thought that someone's parents would be so discoursing towards their daughter – his father certainly would have taken him back if he hadn't Impressed – and made a mental note to cheer on this newly Searched candidate whenever he got a chance. After all, even though he had the support of his family, it had been F'sey that had given him and continued to give him drive and confidence. Perhaps he could do the same for Santhea. He would have to make sure to ask F'sey how to be a good mentor. The greenrider would know. F'sey knew everything.

"I can't say I know what it's like to miss a Hatching, since I Impressed Dievath on my first try, but I think you've got a very good attitude, miss. I think you could do anything you put your mind to with that kind of view. And you never know. Maybe because you were Searched by Dievath you might get some of our luck or something." He smiled, albeit nervously, as he scrubbed the ridges on his dragon's back. Who knew if luck had anything to do with Hatchlings, but he thought it was a nice thing to say so he said it. Even if it wasn't true, he hoped that Santhea would Impress one day and give her parents a reason to be proud of her. Already they should have been proud of her for wanting to try so hard.

He made a small sputtering noise at her final words, and the blush reformed on his face. "I... I should I hope I do not then, Miss Santhea. I look forward to watching you from the Stands. Dievath will watch you too." H'dra resumed his scrubbing with more vigour, hoping to distract himself before he embarrassed himself further. "I feel sort of bad you got roped in to helping me bathe him though," the bluerider added after a pause. "There really is more of him to clean than meets the eye."

Santhea grinned, looking up at the blue with squinted eyes. "Oh I don't mind. He's awesome." she grinned, aquiescing the difficulty that H'dra voiced by scrubbing with extra vigour. She was glad she could claim the hyper activity that her mother despaired of sometimes, glad it had given her a chance for a fated meeting with the shy bluerider and his dragon.

She smiled wryly, wandering herself how luck would affect a hatching. She had seen the faces of the disappointed candidates at every hatching throughout her whole life in the weyr, and seen many of them stand up to 3 hatchings. Some of them never impressed, but every candidate knew that, and were prepared. Mostly. Santhea hoped she would be when the time came. The idea of impressing first time was nearly incomprehensible to her..

She grinned again as she scrubbed some sweetsand into the shining, water-coated hide. "What were you like when you were searched? Nervous, excited, foreboding, disbelieving? I always get nervous - even more so - when I'm standing out in the crowd. My way is to slip in unnoticed.." she mused aloud, remembering countless times she had used her small, un-noticeable appearance to her advantage.

"Did you hear that Mine? She thinks I'm awesome!" Dievath was clearly pleased by the compliment. Luckily for the pair of humans in the water with him he didn't swish his tail like he usually did when he was pleased. The two of them didn't need to be more wet than they already were.

H'dra seemed rather surprised by her question, taking a moment to consider it. "I barely remember what happened when I was Searched… I guess because I was so surprised. My mother chided me for being rude to the rider but I really don't say anything until we got to the Weyr and even then I didn't know what to say. I don't know if the rider would even remember me if he saw me today." He shrugged somewhat sheepishly. Even as a candidate he hadn't been known to make much of an impression on anyone. Honest, hard-working, but very shy made it easy for him to be ignored, not to mention roped into some very unpleasant tasks. But he hadn't minded. It was doing one of those tasks that he had met F'sey!

"I didn't mind standing in the crowd so much since they weren't focused on me but on the dragons, so that was nice. But coming to the hatchings now is a bit… nerve-wracking a guess. I never know who's watching and what they'll think of me, you know? I don't want to let F'sey down. Have you ever met him, F'sey I mean? He's a greenrider here."

Santhea smiled. "I can't say I've met him, but I've probably seen him around. Most of the time I see people, but unless my father deigns to introduce me, I never really know people's names." she rolled her eyes at mention of her father. "I'm surprised Father hasn't found me and hauled me back to the caverns by now.." she said to herself in a half-murmur. She shook her head, as if shaking off the thought and looked up at H'dra again.

"How would you let F'sey down?" she asked, curious. "He seems very important to you." she smiled at the obvious warmth in the bluerider's tone.

"I thought you had to haul things in buckets, mine? Does her father have a big enough bucket to haul her back with? Why does he not just take her back with him? It seems very silly indeed," Dievath commented idly, never one to full understand the implications of the English language. Still, he wasn't about to let anyone take away his extra bath hands. Her father could have her when he was finished being bathed. Dragons took priority, after all. The Weyrlingmaster with his nice green always said stuff like that.

At her question H'dra made a startled squeaking noise, the tips of his ears burning as the blush returned to his face. "He… he is very important to me miss. He's the Weyrlingmaster here, but he was one of the first riders I met. And he was very nice and encouraging, telling me not to worry and that I would Impress when my dragon was on the Sands. I think it's all because of him that I have Dievath here." He gave the dragon an affectionate pat. "But are you really going to get into trouble if your father finds you down here? I don't want you have to be hauled off…"

Santhea watched the bluerider's reaction with micheivous curiosity in her eyes. "He sounds like a nice person." she smiled. "I'll have to meet him sometime."

Thea sighed. "I don't want to be hauled off, either.See, I'm sort of hiding out here. He keeps asking me what I want to do, jobwise. I can't just keep hanging about the Weyr, he says, without an appointed job, other than being just the extra pair of hands. Which I personally don't see the reason with." she rolled her eyes. "And, me being kinda indecisive, I can't choose. And I hate to leave the Weyr. Which is why I'm so grateful to you!" she winked at the bluerider, grinning. "Being a candidate means I get to stay here, and maybe have the best job ever." she sighed happily.

"And, if I'm with you, my father can't haul me off - He has the utmost respect for dragonriders, and if you tell him I'm helping you, I could hang around with you for ages." she grinned. "If I'm not imposing I mean." she suddenly worried that she was, and looked up at H'dra anxiously.

H'dra smiled nervously, though he was quite pleased by her compliment of his mentor. "Well… I think he's nice anyways. I'll introduce you if he's in the same room as us." Somehow he doubted F'sey would be pleased that he was spreading around tales that the greenrider was a nice guy, but he really couldn't speak ill of him. It would be against his nature, not to mention extremely unkind to the man who had given him so much hope before his hatching. Hopefully Santhea would realize what kind of person H'dra was, and take note of his bias on the matter.

He was pleased when she told him that he had saved her from choosing a job, even though he knew it wasn't permanent. If she didn't Impress she would be back in the same position as she was now, but at least he had given her hope. That was all he could ask for. "Oh no! You're not imposing at all miss. I just don't want you to get into any trouble, that's all. Even if your father respects me and my work, I doubt he'll be too impressed that you weren't doing the chores you were meant to do." He knew his mother would have waggled a finger at him

"But if you won't get in trouble you're welcome to finish up. He's almost cleaned, and once he's done he'll take off and go sun somewhere. How's that side coming along?"

"Chores always come second to dragons. Everything comes second to dragons." she shrugged and smiled. "Which they completely deserve." she said, happily patting Dievath's gleaming hide.

Santhea grinned, looking critically at the wet dragon's hide. "I think, almost finished. But I still can't reach his highest parts." she laughed, vainly trying to reach. "Even afloat I'm still short." she rolled her eyes and smiled, patting the water with her brush to make a splash.

"Why is it that dragons sun, anyway? I always wondered.." she asked, curious as usual. when she was young her father told her tales about how it was important for dragons to sun, to keep out the cold of between, but her father dismissed such questions now, and Thea was glad she could ask H'dra. H'dra was nice, and she was glad to be in his company.

Well, that settled it. Feeling better already, H'dra turned his attention to the bits of his blue dragon that the helpful Santhea couldn't quite reach. "Ah, I can get them then miss. Just focus on the bits you can reach." With an ease that came from practice, the bluerider pulled himself up onto Dievath's back and began scrubbing the higher bits. It was easier to do it sitting up here, but it meant that he was going to be very wet later. He'd slid off a couple of times in his youth, which his blue had found quite hilarious, but these days he could sit comfortably and scrub his way along Dievath's back.

"Why do they sun? Well, it helps them warm up. Their blood is different than ours, or so I've been told, and they like to warm it up with the help of the sun. I'd imagine it's sort of like tanning, or warming up on the beach when the water is really cold. Something to that effect, anyways. Dievath just says it feels nice and it makes him sleepy." The blue rumbled his agreement. "You'll learn about all this stuff in the candidate lessons, and more in the weyrling lessons when you make it that far. Here, why don't you clean his face for him? Just be careful around the eyes."

Dievath lowered his head down to the level of the water and closed one of his eyelids over his eye.

Santhea grinned at the easy way he lifted himself up. The relationship between a rider and his dragon was something that had always intrigued Thea, who was naturally friendly to everyone, and once again, she was glad she had come down to the lake today. She'd come down to watch the dragons before, but had always kept a respectful distance, letting a friend pull her back from the water to give the dragons space, tough Thea would glance over her shoulder constantly. Her friends would laugh, and so would Thea, but it wouldn't stop her from doing it everytime.

"Hmm, that's cool." she grinned. "Ah, to have time for sunbathing.." she sighed wistfully, and grinned.
"Sure, will do." she scrubbed the water into the soft hide, taking especial care around his eyes. She looked interestedly at the facets - the way people showed emotion with their facial expressions, it was awesome how the dragons changed the colour of their sparkling eyes. When Santhea snuck out of the caverns at night, if it were still quite early, she could see the great, softly whirling, glowing eyes of the dragons in the bowl. It was a normal thing, but she loved being Weyrbred at moments like that.

H'dra smiled softly at the mention of sunbathing. Growing up in a herder family his tan had come naturally from the long hours tending the sheep. There hadn't even been time to think about manually tanning his skin. Even now that he was at the Weyr, he continued to spend time in the sun, bathing his dragon or simply watching him sun himself. There were benefits to living on an island like Ista, even if it was getting overcrowded.

Dievath, meanwhile, was quite pleased that he could get a very close look at the girl he had Searched. Some people, he had found when he was growing up, were not so pleased to have a dragon's face this close to their own. He had always been on the larger side of his colour, and though it had never bothered H'dra it seemed to make others slightly nervous around him. He had never attributed it to the fact that he was so outgoing and cuddly.

"Does she like my eyes? I like her eyes. I would like to have brown eyes some times but I cannot."

"Dievath says he likes the colour of your eyes," the bluerider relayed, still smiling. "You're awfully brave to get that close to his face. A lot of people weren't so keen on getting close when he was younger. I think the size scares people sometimes."
