and now... since I have a DAY OFF (happy yays) let me explain the 2 name thing.

Every religion has a holy and a mundane, what is part of the religion, and what is not and why they should be kept separated. The Jewish Religion has a pretty good concept of separating the holy from the mundane. You have two names because you as a person have two lives. (Technically 3 if you count Gaia)

So when you're using your normal name, you're doing the mundane things, everyday life, doing everyday things.

However, when you identify as Shmuel, it's usually when you're doing something holy. When someone says a prayer for you... a Asher Yatzar for example. They don't use your normal every day name in the prayer, they use your hebrew name. When you're married you put your hebrew name on the Ketubah. And so on and so on.

So having a hebrew name and a normal name is just yet another way that we Jews separate out the sacred from the mundane.

At least that's how I understand it.

PS : From that "This is your name" website...
my personal power animal is the Oompa Loompa

That's right, my power animal is FICTIONAL

and THAT'S goin on mah facebook.

But, then, is Shmuel the name they will call to welcome me to Gan Eden?

Is it my real name?

Let me put it this way:
If Hashem decided to talk to you, he'd call you Shmuel.
If I decided to talk to you, I'd call you Lumanny.
If your teacher decided to talk to you, he'd call you ____.

The word you're looking for is Pedantic.
The Hebrew teachers, Rabbis, etc call you Shmuel because it's your religious name, not your Germandic name.

In the locked Ashkenazi thread in the JGG, someone mentioned how we got Germandic names.

Only a handful of people know my Hebrew name, so I always go by my English name. Just thought I'd post.

Hm- interesting question.

I always go by my English name (actually a nickname because I hate my official legal name.) Only my closest friends even know my Hebrew name, but that's also because I don't exactly live in a place with many other Jews. My Hebrew name also feels somehow arrogant because of its meaning, so other than my grandmas, I don't know anybody who actually calls me by it.

Oh, and my names are vaguely similar, but far from identical.

Speaking of meanings, I've heard that Shmuel comes from two meanings:

1.) G-d Hears ('Shomea El')
2.) Name of G-d ('Shem El')

Which is it? confused

I think it's the first based on its Biblical basis - you know, the prophet Shmuel who has two books in Prophets? He's called that because God heard his mother's (Chana) prayer and gave her a son after so many years where she had to endure her husband's other wife having one child after the other and her remaining barren. It's why Shmuel was handed over to the House of God in Shilo...

So, yeah. It's "God Hears", I'm pretty sure.

Also, about names, I only have my Israeli name, but Americans seem to have a bigger problem with my last name which is Arabic. It's rather funny, really.

Did you guys get to choose your hebrew names? I did. IN KINDERGARTEN. I had to choose, like, on the spot. I ended up choosing the boy version of my name because I was fresh out of Israel and the hebrew name i shoudl have chosen (the girl one) was the name of a brand of yogurt there and as a kindergartner i didnt want to be named after yogurt so I went with the boy version....*done in 1 breath* whew....
Just wondering.

No, I don't choose, I've just always had it since I was a baby because my parents named me such.

You're from Ireland! That's awesome! Hollywood = Jealous. However now to my input. My Hebrew name is Hannah. my real name is Savannah. Hannah and Savannah go quite well and sound almost the same. However. I ONLY go by my Hebrew name in Prayer, when I talk with a Rabbi, or when I am in the Temple. I heard a long time ago (and this may be misinterpreted) that "Angles only speak Hebrew and when they deliver messages to Hashem, thats what he hears" is this true? I don't know. Sometimes I wish it was because I cuss dreadfully horrible sometimes and take the name in vain. Usually Gah instead of G-d (I'm from the Southern part of the U.S.A). So when I am upset and going on my rampage saying what I have to say, I am hoping that He does not hear me. I somewhat pray that he doesn't count that. Even though I think G-d hears EVERYTHING. I pray in English except when I am praying at the Temple, or when I am saying the Shima. However Interpret what you will. This is just my take.

Also your Hebrew name is awesome. Its a way to identify yourself as a PROUD Hardcore Jew. So Rock on mrgreen

I only have a hebrew name. But I go by the nicknames Leo, Lio, and Lee.

I did that "is this your name?" thing and find it funny how it said this.

first the five facts.

Top 5 Facts for this Name:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. 44% of the letters are vowels. Of one million first and last names we looked at, 15.8% have a higher vowel make-up. This means you are very well envoweled.
2.In ASCII binary it is... 01001100 01101001 01101111 01110010 00100000 01000101 01101110 01100010 01100001 01110010
3.Backwards, it is Roil Rabne... nice ring to it, huh?
4.In Pig Latin, it is Iorlay Enbarway.
5.People with this first name are probably: Male or female... We don't know yet. We're working on it!

next the 3 things I didn't know.

1.Your personal power animal is the Cane Toad
2.Your 'Numerology' number is 4. If it wasn't bulls**t, it would mean that you are practical, tenatious, traditional, and serious. You are well organised and have a strong work ethic.
3.According to the US Census Bureau°, fewer than 0.001% of US residents have the first name 'Lior' and fewer than 0.001% have the surname 'Enbar'. The US has around 300 million residents, so we guesstimate there is only 1 American who goes by the name Lior Enbar.

Lior Enbar, your Power Animal is the Cane Toad. Discover more at www.IsThisYour.Name

I find it funny it said my power animal is a toad and I like toads. lol.

Many Jews have Arab names, and truth be told there a lot of names in Arabic and in the religion Islam that are Jewish in origin.

My parents were deciding whether to name me Alex or Ariel. They thought it sounded to much like the little mermaid, so my english name is Alex and my hebrew Ariel.
