Perhaps Xue's family is the largest there is! There needs to be an award for that. The Xue award. Yes. And the Mei award can go to small families~!
Blue~? Xue's Oneechan has a special someone? And Meirou isn't THAT much older than Xue. She isn't planning on growing up any more anytime soon. Xue can surely catch up!
BUT Xue might have the super-rare lactose tolerance gene. And if not, Meirou thinks soy chocolate may be an answer to his woes. Soy is actually pretty good stuff.
And that he is correct. Mei is only 11, and she is quite sure Xue is 6, so that's only 5 years! And she stayed 3 in the Space Danish, so Xue could be 9! That's 2 years! 3nodding
Meirou hugs him, sighing. Oh poor Xue....Mei is so sorry she made him so upset...So she'll be sure to find a CHOCOLATE BOOK before he gets too old! scream

... this has promise! Xue will have to figure out where to get these awards!
Yes, she does! And Xue can see why she likes him, because he's fun and nice and helpful and and... well, all sorts of good things. So he supposes that there's nothing wrong with having a special someone, even if he doesn't fully understand yet.
Soy chocolate isn't chocolate, he pouts. While he knows that Meirou is trying to make him feel better, he'd rather not think about it right now.
All the math makes Xue a bit dizzy, but it illustrates that there is, actually, a big gap now. Which is scary. Oneechan and Blue and Red and his other friends are all older than him too, and if he remembers right, they're even older than that. He doesn't have any friends who aren't bigger than him, and while that's not a bad thing on its own, he's worried that they'll all get special someones and forget about him. crying
The chocolate book! Yes, that would be fun sometime. But in the meantime, he should look at the present-books and pick something out. He doesn't admit it to Meirou, but he's getting very upset with the bookstore in general.
Maybe they could go for a walk and get some air when they're done?

Meirou will let Xue know if she finds an award shop. 3nodding
She is sure one day he'll find HIS special someone, as will she. It'll take time, but it's worth it in the end, according to Kanna~. But Mei finds this to be odd, as Kanna isn't dating anyone. rolleyes
Mei drops the subject of the chocolate, not wanting to make him any sadder.
Xue will grow up to! Any Mei could be this age for years! So don't worry, Xue! And she definitely won't forget about Xue no matter what! heart
Well, which one does Xue think will make Eri will like?
And a walk sounds great~. It's such a nice day. 3nodding

Now that Xue thinks about it, Des doesn't have a special someone either. So maybe it isn't that big a deal, though it's nice to have one. Like a pet! It's easy to live a fun life without them, but a lot more fun with them!
... Xue feels a little better, then. It's not that he minds having grown-up friends, he clarifies, just that he doesn't want to be left behind. But if Mei promises she won't forget him, then he doesn't care who's bigger.
Great! Excited at the prospect of a walk (and really, being anywhere but the bookstore), Xue starts to sound as carefree as usual, and determined to finish quickly.
As for the books... Xue hasn't the slightest idea what the difference between them is. sweatdrop If there are any that look like they're for fathers of little kids, not little babies, that might be better? Oh, and he has a little girl, so nothing for just boys. But aside from that, no clue. He was clearly not the best choice for this errand, so he trusts Mei to pick a good one.

Well, not exactly like a pet. sweatdrop They have lives of their own, too.
Mei promises that she'll always remember Xue. Always and forever. She doesn't think she could ever forget such a good friend....
Meirou smiles, starting to look over the books, keeping who this is for in mind. She starts to sort out the ones for kids rather than for babies, then girls from boys...And then looks over what there is that's left. Hmmm...
Well, which one of these two does Xue think is the best? They both look like good books, and appropriate for the circumstances. The one on the left is about keeping kids active, and full of fun projects and family outings. The one on the right is about starting to make learning fun for kids.

Xue didn't really mean like a pet. Mostly. sweatdrop
In that case, he isn't upset at all anymore. And he'll always remember Mei, even if she goes back to wherever she came from. heart
As Meirou whittles down the selection, Xue watches curiously, wondering how so many inappropriate books ended up on the list in the first place. It doesn't stay on his mind long, though, since the two that Meirou shows him look really good. He looks over the covers, and then peeks inside, looking for pictures more than words.
Hmmm. If it was just him picking the book, he'd do the one with the fun projects and trips, since that's what he likes best. But he supposes that learning is important too, and if it's fun, that's even better.
Which book would Mei choose?

Meirou is glad that Xue's feeling better. And she doesn't think she'll be returning to the Golden World any time soon....It seems to be impossible.
Meirou would have to go with the projects one as well. 3nodding Kids need to have fun during their childhood~! She hands the book to Xue, and starts replacing the others in their spots, smiling brightly. Xue can go pay, and she'll be done by the time he's done!

Oh. Xue doesn't know whether to feel relieved or sad about that, so he settles for nodding blankly. What is, is, he supposes.
He's somewhat surprised by Mei's choice, almost expecting her to choose the learning one since she seems to like books so much. But rather than ask, he takes the book, thanking her for her help, and promising to meet her by the door when she's done.
... after all, he got a good look at the other one, so he can come back for it another time if it needs to.
Now, where was the paying-place? It takes him a moment to regain his bearings, but soon he spots it and runs off, leaving Meirou- and his net- with the rest of the books.

Meirou smiles gently, watching him run off, and begins to start replacing the books to their places.
When she finishes, she notices the net still propped up against the case, and takes it, laughing quietly. Ah, Xue. So excited he forgets his net...
She walks out to the front of the store, looking for her friend. Xue~? You forgot something~. 3nodding

Xue only has a little bit of difficulty at the register, when he miscounts and accidentally gives the cashier far too much gold. After she explains his mistake and he accepts the money and the book, he goes looking for Meirou.
Mei! Mei! Xue has the- ooooops. Did Xue leave that behind? sweatdrop
Smiling sheepishly, he shoves the book into his bag. He didn't mean to make Mei bring that over for him. But now they she's here, is there anyplace specific she'd like to walk to?

Meirou smiles, handing him his net. Oh no, it's ok. Mei is here to help, after all.
When asked where they should walk, she blinks. Mei isn't sure where she'd like to go....Does Xue know of anywhere? sweatdrop

Xue takes the net and looks at it for a moment, as if he's not sure what to do with it. While it's useful for hunting for monsters and trudging through relative wilderness, it's less suited for a casual walk. But since there isn't much else he can do with it, he shifts it to his other hand.
Oh, Xue knows of a lot of places! While he is slightly less familiar with this particular neighborhood, he knows there's fun things nearby. Particularly, his mind is fixated on a nice ice cream shop, but there's also a bakery and a toy store and a grocery store and a park and a store with pretty things in the window and a clothes store with dolls dressed in cool clothes and-
And that's just nearby. They could always walk to the lake, or to the play-place Mei talked about before, or to the udon-ya to see if the Noodle Man is in...
While there's clearly a lot of options, Xue stresses that they should go wherever Mei likes, really, since Xue has fun everywhere. Except maybe the bookstore. sweatdrop

Hmmm.....Meirou thinks about the choices he brings up, smiling slightly. They could go get ice cream and walk to the udon-ya, if Xue is ok with that?
She has fun everywhere too, especially when Xue's there. He has all sorts of cool stories to tell! 4laugh

That sounds good to Xue! And since the ice cream shop is so close, he doesn't need his secret weapon to find it! He even passed it on the way to the bookstore. Confidently, he points his net in what he's certain is the right direction and starts marching.
What kind of ice cream does Mei like? Xue's favorite is the fudgy kind with bits of brownies in it, but the vanilla with cookies is good too. Even better is to get them both and mix them together, but eating that much ice cream sometimes gives Xue a headache.
Mei likes his stories? Xue grins, and asks what kind of stories she likes best. Oh, but he'll have to be careful with that... Mei knows so much already that he doesn't want to tell her one she's heard before.

Meirou smiles, fallowing his strides as she walks beside him. Xue still has his secret weapon, hmm? Meirou's glad he won't get annoyed by the Lost Monster anymore. Especially not now.
Hmm...Both types Xue has suggested sound incredibly good. sweatdrop Meirou reaaaally likes this one called 'Gold Coast Chocolate', which has DOUBLE the chocolate of regular chocolate ice cream. heart Chocolate is one of those things in life she really can't get enough of. Of course, as Xue mentioned, too much is not good. Mei once got sick to her stomach from eating too much chocolate, but then again, she hadn't eaten anything else. sweatdrop
Oh yes~. Mei really enjoys Xue's stories, especially the one he told her about the Demon Monster, and the Lost Monster. He's always got something to talk about. 3nodding
