Jahdara blinked, her muscles jumping a bit at the startling shriek. The flurry of fur and leaves temporarilly caught her off guard making her take a moment to spring into action.

With a slight shuffle of her hooves, she started to sprint after the creature barely missing it as it neared it's closest position to her stalking point. Then she began the chase.

One hoof after the other. Neck foward. 'Find the creature's neck and claim it...' she thought to herself. She got close enough to where she thought she needed to be and attempted a lunge.

Perhaps her only fault was that she attempted this... with her eyes closed...

She hoped her luck was with her.

The Keshi bolted through the ferns, something large and hooved pounding after him. The small furry creature didn't stop to examine what it was, if it was chasing him, it was a Predator, and no further information was necessary.

Unfamiliar territory, no safe bolt holes ready in advance. Clawed paws fairly flew over the ground as fear gave the Keshi extra speed. Something loomed over him, with a squeak the creature threw himself to the side, but not quite fast enough. Teeth closed down around his tail, bringing an abrupt halt to his flight.

Not about to give in easily, the Keshi kicked and clawed at Jahdara's muzzle with the vigor of one who knows his very life depended upon it.

Jahdara clenched tight with her teeth and lifted, surprised to feel the weight of the Keshi following suit. She opened an eye as she slowed only to have it slam shut again by the sensation of claws raking over her muzzle.

Out of reaction, she bucked and slung the poor creature into some trees as her jaw let it go. She let loose a small shriek of pain as she did so, but it only activated her rage.

'That thing actually hurt me?!' she queried herself. Shaking her head in hopes to shove aside the radiating pain, she hooved the ground and went back after the currently flying creature.

So much for swift and silent, right?

The forest fell silent as an ear piercing shriek of alarm reverberated through the trees, the Keshi flying in an arc, paws scrabbling madly at nothing but air. His cry ended abruptly as he hit the trees, tumbling down into the bushes and ferns. Dazed and stunned from the fall, the Keshi froze, laying as still as possible in the hopes that whatever had attacked would pass him by.

With blood now boiling, and starting to roll down the front of her muzzle, she charged towards where she saw the Keshi fall. She quickly came to a stop and took a brief second to examine the still body.

She huffed, her lungs gasping from the overexertion. At least, she got much more excersize than she was accustomed to. She was already pooped! Jero had fluttered down to the closest branch he dared to the creature and tilted his head to the side a bit. Something wasn't quite right with this situation. Was the Keshi still... breathing...?!

Jahdara leaned down and took a firm grip on the Keshi's scruff with her jaws. She felt a slight bit of remorse for the creature, but she had to eat after all.

Jero gave a squeak of protest, but Jahdara flicked her ear at him as she started to turn, unaware that the Keshi still lived within her jaws.

Lifted off his paws again for the second time that night, the Keshi hung limply in Jahdara's jaws for barely a moment. With another ear piercing shriek, the furry creature turned into a sqirming ball of teeth and claws. The little morsel, previously so inert writhed about, clamping his sharp little teeth onto the mare's tender lip and biting down hard.

Alucard had been content to watch quietly, noting all his daughter's little mistakes.

Closing her eyes when attacking, not good.

Flinging the critter against a tree when she couldn't handle it, good.

Picking it up without making sure it was either unconscious or dead, not good.

He frowned as Jahdara's prey bit down on her lip - that was enough. The vampire Kirin couldn't possibly interfere himself, since he risked hurting his daughter. With a low bugle, he called the Runt to help out again.

xxx

The Runt was much less forgiving of amateurs. She gave Jero a disgruntled look as she swooped past, latching on to the Keshi with all four paws and her teeth. Hopefully that would distract it enough to let go of her master's daughter.

Jahdara's eyes went wide and she shrieked as more pain flooded her muzzle. Jero rolled his eyes as the creature began to flail upon his own master knowing he'd have to listen to her whimpering for the next week or so, but instantly found a himself coiling under the stern look that the Runt had given him.

Jahdara couldn't help but fling her head about, hoping to shake loose the wildly clawing Keshi before any permanent damage could come from it. She then began to buck about once the creature seemed to sprout wings - unaware that they belonged to an ally in this fight.

The young filly not only encountered her first hunting failure...

...but also her first panic attack.

The Keshi screamed as Alucard's partner hit his back, fangs digging in under the thick fur. His hold released on Jahdara's lip, they both plummeted towards the ground in a jumble of paws and wings. He hit the ground with a thud, Runt still biting the Keshi's neck. Shaking side to side much as Jahdara had just done, the furry creature attempts to dislodge his newest tormentor.

Unable to cling on tightly enough, the Runt lost her grip and was flung into the bushes. Alucard, meanwhile, dashed forward and aimed a solid kick at the Keshi, hoof connecting squarely with its head.

"Jahdara... head for the river, wash the blood off. I will join you after I retrieve Runt and our prize."

The young father didn't mean to sound so grim, but this practice had become much messier than he intended it to - and the Runt had been his friend for a long time. He nudged his trembling daughter gently in the direction of the river, then picked up the corpse and looked for his loyal bat.

Jahdara calmed to a trembled stare upon the mass that fell from her muzzle and soon found one plus one equaling two once she realized that the wings had come from the Runt. Her body flinched as the Runt went soaring and when the creature met it's sudden end by her father's hoof only seconds later.

She flicked the flowing tendrils that made her tail and quickly tucked it as her father gave her orders.

"Yes, Daddy..." she whimpered and hurried off to do just that.

She felt horrible. Her first time hunting and she made an ugly mess of it... not to mention she had made a mess of herself. She licked her lip and tasted the metallic twang of her own blood coupled with a small surge of pain. She snorted at her own stupidity. She should have guessed that the creature was only pretending to be dead.

Jero fluttered out after his master and landed softly upon the top of her head. He quickly began to lick and clean the wounds he could reach as they made the short trip to the river. At least he wouldn't go hungry...

"You did wonderfully, Jero. Good job." she half smiled. Afterall, he did what he was supposed to. Jero didn't look convinced, however. The look he had gotten from the Runt made him feel otherwise.

She reached the river and knelt down to dunk her head in the cool waters, rinsing away the blood and revealing deep cuts from the Keshi's claws while Jero found a perch on a nearby branch.

Alucard reappeared by his daughter's side, the Runt clinging to his back and out cold. He gently lay the Keshi down between them and washed his muzzle clean, speaking only when Jahdara's head came up again.

"Did it only get your face?" He asked, concerned.

No daughter of his should have permanent scars, emotional or otherwise. Inwardly he cursed himself for not picking something easier - then again, what was easier and still awake at this time of the night?

She shook her muzzle free of the access water once her head lifted. The cool river water seemed to ease the pain quite a bit and she gave a small sigh of relief at that. Her ears perked to her father's voice and she soon turned her head in that direction.

"I think so. Nothing else hurts." she gathered a bit of the cool water to drink before adding. "I'm sorry I made a mess of my hunt, Daddy. I'll do better next time. I promise." She sounded quite determined to do so too.

If there was anything else hurt aside from her face, it was her pride.

She looked at the Keshi then let her ears fall a bit. She then looked up at her father as if she was about to say something else and noticed the Runt upon his back. "Your bat!" she gasped. "Is the Runt going to be alright?!"

"She'll be fine," said Alucard, peering at the filly's face. If she didn't try to scratch at things while they were healing, nobody would be able to tell she'd ever been wounded.

With the same hoof that had killed it, he nudged the still-warm body towards Jahdara.

"You should eat... or at least, Jero should." He grinned. "It wasn't too bad, for your first time. Did I ever tell you how my first hunt with Runt went?"

Jahdara let out a sigh of relief. She wasn't sure if she'd ever forgive herself if something serious had happened to the Runt during this hunt. Looking up at Jero, she could tell he felt the same just by looking at the worried expression he gave towards the currently limp bat.

Jahdara looked at the Keshi and frowned a bit. Her father made it look so easy. She was ashamed at the fact she couldn't pull it off as swiftly as he had, but she had to remind herself that these sort of things did take time.

She then looked up at him with a curious tilt of her head. "No, you haven't!" she perked, ears forward to listen intently as she leaned down to start eating from the still warm lump of fur her father had offered her. Jero flitted down to share it with her, keeping a watchful eye on Jahdara to make sure he wasn't anywhere near her muzzle should she bite somewhere without looking. Last thing he needed was to end up like the Runt. One unconscious bat was enough.
