Orli glared at Austin. "You're making that up." she said. Of course, Ranza hadn't been the same since that day she'd tried to go fight pirates, but that was different. That was called growing, not getting possessed. And ghosts and skeletons in the beach were definitely a lie. "Just shut up already."
She reached down, pulled up a clam, and looked back at Polly as she tossed it in the bucket. "Yeah, they are," she said. "Though you don't glow, do you? So I dunno what yours would do."

He wasn't usually a violent fellow, Austin thought, his eyes narrowing dangerously on the girl, but this one had pissed him off even when they were little. He really didn't see what Polly saw in her. If it were up to him he would have taken her to the island and abandoned her to the sharks.
"You think I'd lie about my best mate?" Austin asked dangerously. Polly accusing him of lying was one thing. He didn't care about that. But this--
"Not right now, Austin," Polly said. She had a sharp, dangerous look on her face. "Are you wearing it right now?" she asked Orli.

"Yeah," said Orli, and held up her hand so Polly could see a piece of string looped around her wrist and through the charm a few times. "I wanted a real chain for it but I don't have any," she added lamely.
"Where's yours?" she asked, and decided to just ignore Austin, even if that was easier said than done.

"On the ship," Polly said, waving the question off and reaching for the charm. "Can I see this for a moment?"
It was then that things clicked in Austin's mind. "You don't think--"
"Yeah, it makes sense in a messed up sort of way," Polly said. "They're like the stuff that was sold in that shop. I just need to smell it to make sure."

Orli carefully untied the bracelet and handed it to Polly. "Smell it?" she asked. "What shop?"
She narrowed her eyes. "What's going on?"

Polly sniffed it, her eyes narrowing. "It smells just like it," she told Austin, not bothering to explain to Orli yet.
"What's the gypsy witch got to do with the charm shop?" Austin asked. "She didn't look like she had the cash to run a place like that."
"She doesn't haveta. She could just be selling stuff there," Polly said, handing Orli back the charm. "We gotta go back. Then we'll be able to find her."

Orli tied her bracelet back around her wrist and nodded. She didn't fully comprehend what was going on, but it seemed to her that Polly knew something important.
"All right," she said, a bit hesitantly. The witch had scared her silly, she remembered. "What if something bad happens?" she asked, eyes going wide. "What if it's a trap to cut out my heart?"

"We'll throw Austin in first," Polly said cheerfully, tossing her almost empty bucket to the side. "Hey, Pop! We're going witch hunting!"
"What about the clams?" Tock shouted as she grabbed for Orli's hand to haul her away.
Austin handed his own (slightly more full) bucket to Jake. "I win, then," he said before racing off after the girls.
"There's only five in here!" Jake yelled after him. Then cursed. It looked like they would be digging for clams, after all.
