Fish, wide-eyed, stared into the tank. "I dunno," he said quietly to his friend. "I've never gotten to try talking to a walrus before."
He looked up at the walrus and met its eyes. It reminded him of a grumpy old man. There was a flash of recognition in its dark eyes, and then it slapped a flipper against the glass and bellowed something. Fish leapt backwards, startled.
"Woah!" he said. "I understood that!"
He stepped back towards the glass, gave it a slap with his palm, and paused for a moment before bellowing something back. The walrus replied almost instantly.
"He says the vet cleans his teeth," Fish told Miles. "Walrus is a weird language."

Miles still found the fact that Fish could speak to whales and walruses fascinating. He gave a bright smile, and tried to mimic the bellowing sound the walrus had made. "How do you talk to them?" He asked. He wondered if he could learn how to do it. If he could, that'd make him the coolest boy around (with the exception of Fish, who was, undeniably, the coolest).
"The vet, huh?" Miles asked, uninterested. He thought his theory of a giant toothbrush was much more interesting. He paused, and looked around. Something caught his eye. Something black, and white, with wings.
"Penguins!" He said, pointing at the awkward looking birds. They were sliding on their stomachs down a makeshift iceberg, into the water.

Fish shrugged. To tell the truth, he wasn't sure how he spoke to animals. It was just something instinctive. He'd been doing it ever since he'd been a baby. "Dunno," he said. "Dad says I have water in my bones."
He doubted this: he'd never heard it slosh the least bit, and what would that mean when he broke his arm? He hadn't sprung a leak or anything when that happened. He rapped his cast against the glass in frustration and then followed Miles towards the penguins.
"I can't talk to these," he said balefully, but watched them happily enough. It sure looked like they were having fun, after all. "That looks really cool!" he said. "I want to try!"

Miles eyes grew to the size of saucers. "Water?" He asked, looking at Fish's cast. "Did it splash out, or something?" He asked, curiously. He took hold of Fish's good arm, and tried to listen for the water. "I don't hear anything." He said, sounding disappointed.
His attention was drawn back to the penguins. "Can you do anything else?" He asked his friend, while watching them slide. "Other than talk to animals, you know.."

Fish pointed to the gills on his neck. "I can, uh, breathe underwater," he said, and sighed through his gills, which made a bit of a wheezing, bubbling noise. "And do that," he said.
He considered the penguins.
"But I don't have magic powers or anything like that," he added, although that would be cool. He looked back at Miles. "What about you? What can you do that's cool?"

Miles clearly thought breathing underwater was one of the coolest things ever. "Can you control water, or anything? I've read about people like that--and.." He paused to think about his friend's question.
"Well, I know things before they happen." Miles said lamely, as if he didn't believe that was very cool. "I'm always right--too." He added, as an after thought. "I don't know what else I can do--I haven't really done anything cool."

Fish frowned. "Dunno," he said. "I've never tried. Do you think I'd know if I could?"
His eyes widened - clearly he thought Miles's powers were pretty cool. "That must make you awesome on tests and stuff, right?" he asked. If you were always right, school had to be a breeze! "That sounds really useful! I mean, talking to whales isn't gonna do me any good in the long run, is it?"

"I think you will." Miles said knowingly. "Someday." He paused. "My thing doesn't really work like that." He explained. "I think that would be like cheating--but I know things when they're going to happen. Like my mom--she's dating someone." He paused.
"I know[/i ]she's going to marry him. It's not guessing. It's really weird--because I don't know what kind of questions'll be on the tests and stuff. It's kinda lame." He paused to take a breath, and then said. "I'd trade with you if I could--I'd really rather talk to whales than be able to know what's going to happen."

"You think I will?" asked Fish, a gleam in his eye. "That'd be so cool! I wonder when I get them? I'd love to do that. I'd be like Aquaman!"
"Well," he continued seriously, tugging Miles towards another tank, "I think knowing the future would be really cool. But I don't think we can switch. Oh! i know! We can be superheroes!"
He turned to look at the tank they had arrived in front of.
"Orcas!"

"You will." Miles said with a smile. "I don't know exactly when--but it'll happen. Maybe soon." He gave a shrug, before grinning at his friend. "Yeah! We can be super heroes and I can tell you what's going to happen--and we can save..." He hesitated. "Everything!" He gazed at the orcas for a minute.
"These are cooler than the one in Free Willy." He informed his friend. "Can you talk to them too?"

"Free Willy was lame," said Fish, and wrinkled his nose. He returned his attention to the Orcas swimming in the large tank in front of them. "Yeah," he said. "I should be able to."
He pressed his forehead against the glass and thought for a moment before humming something through his sinuses. He looked up. A huge Orca was swimming towards him.
"Orca's easy. It's like dolphin but deeper."
